A Priest and Life After Death | Stefan Lampe's Near Death Experience

Stefan Lampe, a Catholic priest in Germany talks about how the seconds during a car accident had lasting effects on his faith.
Some additional information about this interview by Werner Huemer:
Near-death experiences always touch upon religious concepts as well. That is why I found the interview with Stefan Lampe even more important.
In his interview, he talks about his experience and how it changed him. This was also the purpose of this interview. He is a good example of how people, who are deeply rooted in their faith, can also have similar experiences as people who are not religious. In this interview, I did not ask further questions concerning the Christian faith. Maybe this would have been necessary for some viewers. Thus, I would like to quote the following text taken from my correspondence with Stefan Lampe as an addition to the interview:
“Where does my experience leave room for Jesus Christ? This question was not part of the aims of this interview. However, since people have asked about it a few hundred times, I am happy to add my ‘stammering’. The experience that I recalled as an ‘addition of the self’ led into a room that was not only about the self but also about unconditional love. I could also say a room about the ‘you’, of ‘acceptance’, ‘of being recognised’, a feeling of ‘I am at home here’ that went as far as to the unsettling notion that ‘I’d always been here’. This ‘self’ that went far beyond the ‘YOU’ was clearly personal. I wasn’t located in a ‘heaven of the self’ but in the presence of an incredible friendship. To me, this had a name, namely Jesus Christ.
However, it was a Jesus Christ that went lovingly beyond the church, the bible and denominational ways of thinking. It was a Jesus Christ that included all people. At the time, more than twenty years ago, I wasn’t really immediately aware of that. However, when I read the letter of the Colossians today, where it says, ‘In him all things hold together’, I am back in thoughts at this ‘non-place’ I experienced at the time. I may be forgiven that I can’t find answers for myself regarding theological questions that can be asked in this context. Let’s stay excited and wonder.’ - Stefan Lampe

Everything we do affects everything. That’s how interconnected we are. Every little thing, all the time, whether in private or public, has a very real effect on the All That Is, everything and everyone is a part of the All, there are no exceptions. This gives me pause, I want to be a better person, make better choices, I want to be in alignment with all that is good, the Divine Goodness.

No where in the NT (starting with Acts 2, the outporing of the Holy Spirit) is says this is the condition to be saved: Repent! The Father loves us unconditionally and He is in His eternal rest since the success of His Son's cross-events. Repent means: change the way you think, agree with My word. The establishment of religions is the human attempt to ritualize the indefinable sacredness that everyone can sense. Religion is created by and for human limitation. 🤗💖 I had a NDE when I was 17. It was profound and left my life full of 'knowing' when things would happen. I would get 'flashes' of events and then they would happen. One such 'flash' was the death of my child while waiting for the bus. We even talked about it three days before. When the doorbell rang at 1am, I knew what they would tell me, she was gone, it's been 48 months September 10th, she was 26, waiting for a bus and a car jumped the curb. My NDE was full of knowledge and a 'knowing' that I would lose my child. (I did not make this revelation till after she passed) I lived with two huge knots, one on each shoulder, no massage could help me after my NDE. The day after she passed, they were gone.

Thank you for sharing this. There is far greater meaning in your inability to put it into words than you realize. It is hard to put “love” into words although most of experience an imperfect form of it, so it must be even harder to put the unconditional love and oneness that you experienced into words. I had an experience (not NDE) where I saw “Everything will be alright” which is similar to “Nothing can go wrong”. I was traveling to my office in Seattle last year by bus and was reading an online story where a couple were horrible to each other. I am usually empathetic and perceive others pain as my own. So reading this story deeply affected me more than usual and felt a sudden onslaught of negative emotions (sadness, betrayal, dread, anxiety, etc). Almost immediately right in front of me stood up to get down at his bus stop and his jacket had a large patch that said “Everything will be alright”. The relevance and immediacy of the message was so profound to me that I was so thankful for the experience (although it started off negatively). I used to be a skeptic and agnostic, but going through the experience (apart from others) from a first persons point of view was has helped me realize that there is far far greater meaning in this world than what would seem.

Very interesting, very frank. It's especially interesting to hear this story from a priest. In former ages a priest sharing such an experience might be burnt at the stake. It shows how times have changed. Not having the words to describe his experience can be understood maybe by comparing it to trying to communicate with a child in the womb what the world will be like after birth. The child has no experiences of vision, hearing, tasting, etc., so how could you explain to him his future experiences after birth? But while in the womb, his body is being prepared for his future existence: legs for walking, eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, etc. Perhaps our life in the physical world is preparing us spiritually for our future existence after the death of the body. We are developing such spiritual attributes as love, kindness, compassion, knowledge, patience, etc. which will be needed in the world to come.

The soul takes a human body to have a human experience. The soul is ETERNAL. We have many physical experiences. To think we only have one makes no sense. No one will be left behind. Evety soul is a fragment of the ALL. THE ONE. EVERY SOUL WILL RETURN TO THE ONE. EVEN A SOUL THAT TAKES ON THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE OF EVIL, LIKE HITLER. SOME SOULS ARE MORE EVOLVED AND ARE CLOSER TO RETURNING TO THE ALL. SOME ARE LIVING ABLIFE IN SERVICE TO OTHERS, AND SOME ARE LIVING A LIFE IN SERVICE TO SELF. SOME SOULS HAVE EVOLVED TO ENLIGHTENMENT, SUCH AS GREAT SAINTS. IN INDIA THEY ARE CALLED SIDDHAS. WE ARE ALL ON THE PATH OF ENLIGHTENMENT. WE HAVE MANY MANY HUMAN INCARNATIONS BECAUSE ONLY IN A PHYSICAL BODY CAN WE LEARN ANDHAVE THE EXPERIENCE WENEED TO RETURN TO THE ALL. TO THINK WE ONLY HAVE ONE HUMAN EXPERIENCE MAKES NO SENSE. FOR THOSE WHO ONLY BELIEVE WHAT THEY READ IN THE CHRISTIAN BIBLE, AND SAY THAT REINCARNATION IS NOT IN THE BIBLE. THAT IS FALSE. IT WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE. THERE WERE MANY BOOKS THAT WERE ELIMINATED FROM THE BIBLE BY THE CHUCH ELDERS AND CONSTANTINE IN APPROXIMATELY 550 AD. THE CHURCH CONTROLLED SOCIETY AT THAT TIME AND THE LEADERS DIDNT WSNT PEOPLE TO THINK THAT THEY HAD MORE THAN ONE LIFE. SO REFERENCES TO REINCARNATION WERE REMOVED.

If he were to begin a formal meditation practice, he might experience this “God Consciousness” more often, with it filtrating into his waking state, minute to minute, which it sounds like the NDE… DID do to some extent (a blessing). In his job as a priest, he is most likely encountering people stuck in only an experience of dualistic-physical reality, stuck in religious beliefs and concepts, but perhaps part of his Gift, in his present incarnation, is to bridge the gap for his congregates (and himself) between religion and Spirituality/Truth/“God.”

NDE do not need for the person to die. It is the experience of seeing the other side that is usually reserved for those who die. I have had this. I have not come anywhere near death. This sort of experience is available to anyone if they listen to the word of God. God speaks to all, all the time. Those who say this is not true do not listen to God in their own lives.

Thank you so much for sharing this story, I do believe also that many people experience NDE and beside the fact that we don't have the proper language to describe them, we are also discouraged by many things ( I am an NDE also😉). I used to think, as a child, that everybody is floating, I am speaking about OBE, and is a common think. I do believe we all, as children, "know" and "see" and "hear" and "recall"much more and is sad that we are "forced" to forget or don't mention about. I am 53 now but today children are put on drugs just for beeing active, they became a burden or a trouble for those around them. I think we should pay attention and try to learn from them, everything is so much easier when you are a kid and they surely find a way to talk about anything. Thank you again❤️

Basically reality has to be bigger than what we know outside of our perception and scale. Just as a tree we see is not the source of its life, but the seed underneath ; Our bodies are like that tree, just for show , but there’s a seed inside of us which is the source. And so something that is Small like a seed will experience time and space at a density which will warp what we perceive as time itself. The wavelength of colors at that small scale will also look different because of the higher peaks of the wave lengths Experienced at a shorter distance. The phenomenon of experience transcends the fluctuations of all of this reality as a separate phenomenon into itself, so it is most likely that experience itself continues on for eternity

I've always understood these experiences in the light of religion because of my upbringing? I've also had a strong interest in "Near Death Experiences" and have been hoping to hear a priest who has had a NDE. I think too it is time to mature in the understanding of these life events and spirituality, rather than through religion. Thank you Father Lampe. Denise

I'll say 'structural', ie. they inform something much more like a dual-action monism or neutral monist type of metaphysics rather than being an explosion of something like teenage excitement about specific symbols. While the later can bring some people hope it doesn't help those as much who want to get a grasp on 'how do I inform my life decisions with this information'. I think that when he says, “faith is a crutch” it is not the meaning Americans give to the word. There is mention of a walking stick which is something to assist us in the act of walking. If one hikes he knows that the stick can keep him from falling, assist him in going uphill with added strength and lightness, and even slow his steps when going too quickly downhill. Using the strength of the stick with his hands he can straighten his body enough to take a deeper breath when more oxygen is needed into his lungs. The stick can relieve pressure from some parts of the body that are becoming fatigued. So I would say that if faith is something that can greatly help us in our walk of understanding Christ, then a walking stick, or crutch in his German word, would be a great metaphor.

Why not see ourselves as "cells" in the "body" of Source/God? It even makes more sense of The Golden Rule. All these experiences of NDE, out of body and "in the spirit" are those which have taken place in us while in human form. To explain in human terms what concepts there are in the spiritual world and that to which we really belong to is very difficult since in our human form we can only try to explain in human terms. In effect this limits us to our life experiences and our interpretations of those events. Most people who have been exposed to an experience that was purely spiritual like a momentary opening to a knowledge that transcends all those you have had as a human may take a lifetime if ever to understand. Try explaining in your native language to someone who has never heard it before. My own was a split second of human time that showed me an example of the connection of all things created. And I do mean ALL and everything. My own closest weak human understanding is that we are part of the thought of the creator and live in that thought in one form now but His when this temporary life is over. As such, why would we treat anything else worse than we treat ourselves if we are in fact all the same thing? I think this is the lesson of love being most important.

Excerpts from Jiddu krishnamurthi's "Commentries on living" "One day I set out for those hills with my painting things, for I had seen something over there which I wanted to paint. It was fairly early in the morning when I got to the place, and there were a few clouds in the sky. From where I was I could see across the valley to the bright sea. I was enchanted to be alone, and began to paint. I must have been painting for some time, and it was coming along beautifully, without any strain or effort when I became aware that something was taking place inside my head, if I can put it that way. I was so absorbed in my painting that for a while I did not notice what was happening to me, and then suddenly I was aware of it. I could not go on with my painting, but I sat very still." After a moment's pause, he continued. "Don't think me crazy, for I am not, but sitting there I was aware of an extraordinarily creative energy. It wasn't I that was creative, but something in me, something that was also in those ants and in that restless squirrel. I don't think I am explaining this very well, but surely you understand what I mean. It was not the creativeness of some Tom, Dick or Harry writing a poem, or of myself painting a silly picture; it was just creation, pure and simple, and the things produced by the mind or by the hand were on the outer fringes of this creation, with little significance. I seemed to be bathed in it; there was a sacredness about it, a benediction. If I were to put it in religious words, I would say... But I won't. Those religious words stick in my mouth, they no longer have any meaning. It was the centre of Creation, God himself.... Again these words! But I tell you, it was holy, not the man-made holiness of churches, incense and hymns, which is all immature nonsense. This was something uncontaminated, unthought of, and tears were rolling down my cheeks; I was being washed clean of all my past. The squirrel had stopped fretting about its next meal, and there was an astonishing silence - not the silence of the night when all things sleep, but a silence in which everything was awake. "I must have sat there, motionless, for a very long time, for the sun was in the west; I was a little stiff, one leg had gone to sleep, and I could stand up only with difficulty. I am not exaggerating, sir, but time seemed to have stopped - or rather, there was no time. I had no watch, but several hours must have passed from the moment I put my brush down to the moment I got up. I was not hysterical, nor had I been unconscious, as some might conclude; on the contrary, I was fully alert, aware of everything that was happening around me. Picking up all my things and carefully putting them in my knapsack, I left, and in that extraordinary state I walked back to my house. All the noises of a small town did not in any way disturb that state, and it lasted for several hours after I got home. When I awoke the next morning, it was completely gone. I looked at my painting; it was good, but nothing outstanding. "Sorry to have talked so long," he concluded, "but it has been bottled up in me, and I could not have talked to anyone else. If I did, they would call in a priest, or suggest one of those analysts. Now I am not asking for an explanation, but how does this thing come into being? What are the circumstances necessary for it to be?" You are asking this question because you want to experience it again, are you not? "I suppose that is the motive behind my question, but..." Please, let us go on from there. What is important is not that it happened, but that you should not go after it. Greed breeds arrogance, and what is necessary is humility. You cannot cultivate humility; if you do, it is no longer humility but another acquisition. It is important, not that you should have another such experience, but that there should be innocence, freedom from the memory of experience, good or bad, pleasant or painful. "Good Lord, you are telling me to forget something which has become of total importance to me. You are asking the impossible. I cannot forget it, nor do I want to." Yes, sir, that is the difficulty. please listen with patience and insight. What have you now? A dead memory. While it was happening it was a living thing and there was no 'me' to experience that living thing, no memory clinging to what had been. Your mind was then in a state of innocency, without seeking, asking, or holding; it was free. But now you are seeking and clinging to the dead past. Oh, yes, it is dead; your remembrance has destroyed it and is creating the conflict of duality, the conflict between what has been and what you hope for. Conflict is death, and you are living with darkness. This thing does happen when the self is absent; but the memory of it, the craving for more, strengthens the self and prevents the living reality. "Then how am I to wipe away this exciting memory?" Again, your very question indicates the desire to recapture that state, does it not? You want to wipe away the memory of that state in order to experience it further, so craving still remains, though you are willing to forget what has been. Your craving for that extraordinary state is similar to that of a man who is addicted to drink or to a drug. What is all-important is not the further experiencing of that reality, but that this craving should be understood and should voluntarily dissolve without resistance, without the action of will. "Do you mean that the very remembering of that state, and my intense urge to experience it again, are preventing something of a similar or perhaps a different nature from happening? Must I do nothing, consciously or unconsciously, to bring it about?" If you really understand that is so. "You are asking an almost impossible thing, but one never knows."

On the one hand I truly believe he had an NDE but on the other, I think his training as a priest and all the theology theories he studied have prevented him from embracing something extraordinary that he went through. Hence the difficulty in verbalizing it. I don’t think his earthly self is ready to let go of the dogmas he built around himself.

His subconscious is putting up roadblocks and shielding him from the knowledge he gained every time he says he isn't explaining it well. That is just the way the brain works. It tries to shut down thought like this by inserting doubt ("I'm not explaining it well"), so that he will give up and stop digging for answers. The subconscious sees this kind of examination as a threat because if you ask enough questions you may derive something "hidden" by the subsconscious mind. Part of the job of the subconscious (and unconscious) is to protect the person's consciousness from being overwhelmed or from uncovering painful emotions/memories or conclusions. Included within that would be questions of faith, doubts, distrust, etc., and for a Catholic priest, these thoughts would be especially threatening indeed. Part of his personality is constructed on faith, after all. The subsconscious would therefore suppress these things, or repress them altogether if it deems something (like doubt in God's existence) dangerous enough. It sounds a little crazy, but it is how the brain works.

I agree with him about how, on this side of The curtain, faith being j "merely," - metaphorically - a walking crutch

I did DMT and had a NDE maybe out of body- but truly the feeling of connectedness and perfectness is so great it’s like being reinman you understand everything so curiosity slips you because you are sitting in pure majesty . You are aware of every molecule/ atom , how they connect from the smallest all the way to the biggest , you can see how the universe is built on top of itself?! Something like that. It is stacked and time begins in another direction.

Try having an NDE/OBE not doing drugs, cause it all comes back to the drugs that caused it. Dieing is a bit harder to write off an NDE when doctors pronounced you dead and you can still recount everything after your death.

Could this be explained by a DMT rush caused by the trauma of the accident? I am just asking in good faith

One thing is clear when you've read about these NDEs and viewed enough of them; there is an expansive sense of experience that goes beyond the individual, but the perceptions of it seem culturally determined. It should also be noted that only a very small minority of those who've been declared clinically dead but revived have any experience of an NDE at all.

God is timeless he cannot be defined. To define him is to limit him and that is impossible.

A personal revelation, which makes one aware of the web of life, contains such vast amounts of information, that interpreting it to the listener, is a challenge beyond the imagination, of the listener. Everyone who attempts this impossible feat, deserves accolades, just for trying.

Watch ND experiencers faces as they attempt to describe their experience. Not all but many, their faces take on a look, a subtle gaze of being transported. As if, in a way, they are in that place again. Their countenance changes. I think when someone has a ND or some type of out of body experience, their "being" is now aware -- the space between here and there no longer has any bounds.

The Bible says, faith is the assurance of things hoped for. The conviction of things not seen. And it is impossible to please God without faith. Yes, We need that “crutch”, until we see face to face.

Thank you for sharing. Amazing... This is the only place where I found NDE stories of people who never actually went through the clinical death as we know it.

Try the channel called "After all, what are we?". It's in Portuguese but if you turn on the subtitles, they are pretty accurate. Lots of great accounts on there.

To know that you are just one of billions of separate, unique individuals with your own consciousness is to know your ego. To know that there is only one consciousness being expressed in billions of unique ways is to know your self. When ego and self are known, only that which we call God remains.
