I don't really agree with this. Some of my best answers haven't been circulated widely at all, and some of my worst/laziest answers have gotten thousands of upvotes.

Sean, I'm actually running a live experiment based on your suggestion. I went ahead and deleted 100 worst answers out of 680 total ( anything below the threshold you suggested, will probably delete another 50-100 tonight). I have 1 answer with 14K upvotes and bunch in 100 to 800 zone, and most answers in that 20 to 100 zone. So we'll see what happens. How would you go about measuring improvement? Hit me up on Quora, if you are interested in the results of this mad experiment: www.quora.com/profile/Nick-Gorbikoff P.S.: My reasons for being on Quora are to improve my writing skills and learn about marketing and history from people who are smarter than me . Quora has abundance of both.

My best answers are mostly long answers with no more than 5 upvotes. My most upvoted answers are answers with a clickbait image, a personal story & a bit of information, nearly 1K upvote. I'll never delete good answers so I can become a clickbait writer. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Hey Sean. Thank so much for the tips and especially the eye opening stats! But let me ask you: What about posts that have a high a pretty high view count but low upvotes? Is it possible such high view counts could result from external traffic - people viewing but not signed in to upvote, say from Google search? Here's an example of a post I wrote recently about how Google hires, trains and promotes their top managers. It has over 12.5k views and only 16 upvotes but still getting around 500 views per day: www.quora.com/How-are-managers-at-Google-promoted/answer/David-Haldorsen Would you delete such a post? ....

What’s up Sean? Fellow Quoran here! How did you come up with the 40 to 1 views to upvote ratio? I am asking because some of the views may come from search engine traffic (externally to Quora) who may not have a quota account and may not be able to upvote your content even if they like it. Did you learn anything interesting when you visited with the company in California?

I tried this to some extent and I think the implementation of this trick is actually quite subtle. When I did one 'pass' of deleting answers, my other answers started to get more views. It did help my quality content get upvotes some what but it also decreased the upvote to view ratios of my good answers. Some of my answers that originally passed the test no longer passed the test after the first iteration of using this trick due to views increasing faster than upvotes. To fully embrace this advice, you'd need to apply this trick constantly and improve your writing at an appropriate rate.

And no i don't think upvotes matter as much, i do thrive to be better but also kinda want to just put my opinion out there, doesn't matter how people take it. what you said was totally right for people who want upvotes in their answers. what i want though is for people to suggest edit for my answer like they do with more popular writers.

This completely works as input for approach about optimizing viewership and response, but a lot of people on Quora aren't on that page. If you answer questions to convey specific information to a limited audience this approach isn't relevant. If you answer questions mostly to draw views and upvotes, and tailor both the questions you respond to and the format of the answers to that goal, then this approach is relevant. For subject specialists this probably isn't relevant, for example. For me writing about tea and Buddhism it wouldn't work, but for whatever reason related to travel it would. Beyond viewership counts remaining low the content wouldn't typically be catchy enough to trigger a good upvote proportion, even with good writing and great information. It works well as input to consider, though.

I disagree with ONE phrase: "It's going to help you to become a better writer." Wrong. You're saying this precisely because you are NOT a writer yourself, but rather a "marketer". What you learn using your method is: 1. How to write about popular topics and avoid niche topics 2. How to get many people read your texts (medium-short length, headers in boldface, pictures, etc.) 3. How to write in simple, "marketing-friendly" language It's like teaching folks how to sell a brand. What you sell doesn't have to be very good, as long as you can sell it. That may work in business, but is the opposite of a good writer. So yes, any serious writer with at least some ambition regarding authenticity, text quality and style will disagree with you.

I guess Quora promotes my answers. They go on promoting till 1% and some times 0.1% up votes. Further many readers find me via google search or my students and people who know me. They never up vote. Hence this advice has to be modified to 'All answers with less than 1000 views and 2.5% up-votes.
