A Pool Pro’s training method/Part 1/courtesy Tony Robles

Here is one of the best training exercises I’ve seen for learning how to run out. This video caters to all skill levels and will transform your ability to play accurate position. This training method will help with rotation Pool, eight ball and more. I rank this training method as one of top exercises.

We talk on the phone from time to time and he encourages me and gives ideas that can be of help to my viewers which I really appreciate. It is both our goal to help as many players as we can so the sport grows in popularity. As more Players find success, more will want to join in. Thanks again 👍🏻❤️🎱

Ron, tried this for the first time today and love it! Really helped me improve my position play already as it opened my eyes on cue ball control and how the ball comes off the rails and how draw can help or get you into trouble! Angle, speed, spiin! Really take the time for stroke control and plan your shot! Thanks Ron! Dave

I do this all the time. I roll 3 balls out on the table at random and then sticker up their locations. Really helps for people like me with ADHD who don't like doing structured drills like the line up. Allows us to introduce structure to practise without feeling like it. It also lets us look at an image of a pattern and know "okay if I go this way, it's gonna be more work, so unless I'm avoiding traffic, I shouldn't take it." 8 ball variant: keep those balls in the same place, but introduce blocker balls as well.

This is a particularly good drill because as you said, you have to think 2 shots ahead, plus the shot you’re about to make. The line is everything, and having just 3 balls makes visualizing that line easier. When you get good at this, add a ball. Or use spin on every shot, which I find improves my speed control (using spin usually requires less speed, which means more control-I can shoot more softly on more shots.)

Excellent drill with a lot of variations. The nice thing about drills like this is it also teaches different angles and there are different types of shots to be made. There are many I know that say drills like this are not that important because you get to practice the same runout(s) over and over. But they are wrong. The skills being developed in these runouts you showed apply to all sorts of other runouts. Tor Lowry is the person that got me convinced to work on pattern layout drills over and over and over until they became routine. This has done wonders for my game and has opened my eyes to a number of different shots I needed to work on.

  • @ronthepoolstudent

Thank James, I agree of course. In this video for instance, you can see where I had to use stun when the shots were a bit too straight which is always going to happen when we do not gain the proper angle. Even the little things make us a more rounded player. Many don’t understand the subtleties of differing degrees of stun so this one will expedite their learning process. Also; not to mention, other spins were required to make the cue ball drift into the correct side of the line as was shown here. This is a great training method to include in one’s practice session for sure 👍🏻

Thank you Valente. As an FYI, the balls were rolled onto the table randomly. You can also choose to break them and play from there. The idea is to figure out the best ball in hand scenario to find the highest percentage to run out. Once you’ve succeeded at one pattern, swap the balls in their marked locations and repeat. Once you’ve worked through all possible combinations of patterns, roll them to new places on the table, mark these new locations once again and start working through a whole new series of patterns. Hope that made sense.

Thanks you Jeff, I started actually learning the game, February 22nd, 2021. Prior to that, I played as a teen but didn’t know a thing other than I was decent at making shots. I stopped playing early (20 year old) as my eyesight was failing. Fast forward to 2017 and I had my eyes corrected. It wasn’t until 2021 however, when I tried playing again at a neighbor’s house. I could see but wasn’t good at all. From there, I decided to order a table of my own to figure out this awesome game. I’m currently at 6k plus hours as I play daily as I’m retired. I still have a long way to go in my quest to reach 10k hours of quality practice. Take care 👍🏻 ❤️🎱

I’ve been doing exactly what you’re dreaming of doing, for around 15 years-and it’s exactly what you’re expecting. A bloody GREAT TIME! I bought myself a sweet custom cue and I play every chance I get. It never gets boring, because you keep trying to improve.
