i think the marketing really screwed up the game, i wish it got updates because even though i don’t think it could ever surpass gw2 it has a great nintendo switch port and it could’ve been even better

I don't believe the balancing being bad is the reason for its downfall as garden warfare 2 has the same balancing issues it's more so the lack of variety and therefore replayability that The garden warfare shooters were known for that ultimately killed the game as the game seems closer to an OverWatch / TF2 clone then a PvZ game

"Zombies on your Lawn" made me cry. It was just... Everything. Beating the game, defeating the boss, being literally 5...

Finally, someone who shares the same memories as me. I vividly remember playing Plants vs. Zombies 2 on my iPad throughout different intervals in my childhood, and not only did they provide countless hours of enjoyment and amusement, but they also found a place in my heart for themselves. No matter what, I will never forget these experiences. It's truly tragic and heartbreaking to see this beloved series falter into the darkness, but we must take it upon ourselves to use our nostalgia to forever keep the old PvZ in our memories.

BFN is a weird one because moving the microtransactions to be mainly cosmetic should have been a positive thing. The problem was that they ended up scrapping a lot of the things that people loved about the second game in favor of making it more accessable. That's why it died. It went from being a niche shooter with more depth and variance in gameplay, to being a lesser, watered down version of more successful shooters at the time. I get where they were coming from. I was one of the players who played a lot of GW2 when the game first launched, then stopped playing for a while and came back towards the end of it's livespan, feeling pretty overwhelmed and lost at all the new content. BFN was no solution, though.

That's really interesting. Like I said in the video, I haven't played the garden warfare games so it's really insightful to see what players say regarding the third person shooters. I think what you said sums it up pretty nicely, though.

6:17 A lot of the "core PvZ2 developers" that started work on this game originally no longer work on it anymore, with many of them either leaving or even being laid off.

Pvz has the potential to add onto mechanics that could ultimately change the gameplay for the better, building on the fandom that they have now and make the game more recognised and brought back, but they’ve decided to change it into a money printing mobile game for the target audience of young kids.

the original team are absolute artists

I love this kind of retrospectives about mid / late 2000 gaming. It's an era that's really nostalgic for me, as it was quite literally my childhood. The first plants vs zombies is a game that I hold quite close to my heart honestly, as it was the first videogame that I ever got into. I remeber I was like 5 or 6 at the the time, and I'd never had that much contact with gaming as a whole. We didn't have any consoles at home, and I was only allowed to use my parents' computer for extremely short amounts of time, which I spent playing shitty flash games. All that changed when one day we had a family reunion at my uncle's. After we had dinner the whole thing devolved into adults talking about adult shit while the other kids and I were dying of boredom. At one point my uncle took us all to his pc and showed us the game for us to play (they probably wanted to get rid of us for a moment so they could discuss more serious matters). And... I literally fell in love with it. I'd never gotten far into any videogame, let alone into one with a proper campaign, it blew me away. Every time we went there afterwards, I asked my uncle to let me play it for a little while. And with a little effort, I ended up convincing my dad to install it on our own pc and let me play it. That was the first step towards my parents becoming more permissive with computer and videogame usage. I genuinely think that if it wasn't for that game, I would have never gotten into games as much as I did. Hell, my life would probably be way different. Great video btw, keep it up! You are sure to get more subscribers in no time!

i don't count modding community or even community as a whole when considering whether a series is dead pvz will never have another good game, and i doubt it'll even have another good update, so the series is either dead or a rotten zombie itself P.S the mods suck, it still shocks me how there hasn't been a single competent attempt at creating a pvz fan game, except that one guy who made it into 3D and never bothered to go the extra millionth of a step and make a campaign and then release it

The modding community just nerfs plants that give you a chance and buffs already annoying zombies. The mods aren't as good as people say they are. PVZ2 is already hard. It doesn't need to be harder.

i am immensely happy plants vs zombies had so many ports for the soul reason that it has allowed me to never forget it throughout my life. i still played pvz on my nintendo ds up until 2 years ago. and now i have moved over to playing it on my steamdeck with a ps3 emulator to get controller support. its a game thats important to me as i grew up with it as the only tower defense game i would ever play and i still feel that to this day. BTD was really cool and hectic in some ways but i just dont personally like tower defense games. however something about pvz just hits different. from its music and art to its lane style layout where every 0lant has its advantages for creativity not to mention the minigames and side content like walnut bowling and the garden. hell even on cosole ports like the version on my steamdeck i can dock it to a tv, plug in a second controller, and me and my gf can and do play it either together or versus mode. it was fun unlike anything else

the ds port of pvz is pretty damn impressive, and it's a shame people don't talk about it more the soundtrack especially is really nice, with loonboon specifically holding up really well due to the original kinda just fitting the ds format better than the other tracks

This is super underrated!! Really well made video and definitely agree with a lot of these points and it very sad how the series has slowly fallen from grace with every new game. I hope that the popcap team can make a successful sequel to the first 2 PVZ games but it’s not looking too good for the franchise as it’s up in the air if the third game will even ever fully release. I really liked this. Well-executed, richly researched, everything you need for the right kind of documentary. the only problem is that you missed one important spin-off/tower-defense hybrid, which is just like PvZ1, but instead of a homeowner, it's an octopus. And instead of plants, it's animals. And instead of zombies, it's vehicles and robots. And instead of "Animals vs. Vehicles and Robots", it's "Octogeddon"! This is the first game I played on my PC and it's the reason I wanted a PC in the first place. Super replayable, with no paywalls aside from that of the game itself, all around really fun. Seriously, how didju miss this? It's even mentioned at 12:34!

I will never forget the level you have to scream into your ds to keep your plants alive.

Really good video Few things that would have been good to add. 1 GW 2 used to have 10 characters you couldn't pay to get, but then they slowly allowed you to buy them after they stopped updating the game, including the new charecters. 2 very big, the most recent PVZ 3 has been set for sunset. Sunset means they have stopped development. 3 the newest game in development is just candy crush with a PVZ skin.

Yes this is not the version of pvz 3 we are going to get sunset for an pop cap game is very bad. Basically meaning they are just dropping the game.

As a mobile player, most people that play hypercasual mobile games are just kids that got their parent's phones and secretly downloaded the first game they see at the google play store. The playerbase of PvZ3 will be just toddlers.

Incredible video, genuinley great work! I've been a pvz fan since maybe 2013-14 i wanna say when i was young. Still love the franchise, shame about how it is now. But this is an incredibly well made video, so hats off to you. May I ask what you used to edit this?

I used Davinci Resolve. It's really good, comparable to premiere pro and it's FREE. Also, there's a lot of tutorials online if you need help

Everyone always talks about the shrinking zombie level, but as someone who played on this game on the DS, that level was replaced with a mic section. You had to blow into your mic for your plants to power up and starting attacking the zombies again. So, you know, I think that's a pretty cool difference between the different platforms.

Well the funny thing is the reason why I didn't make it this is because it wouldn't have been synced up to the drop of the song. I knew that one of pvz's scrapped names was Doom and Bloom though

plants vs zombies was my introduction to video games and it kept being my favourite franchise ever now it saddens me to what has happened to it i still love returning to garden warfare 2 on steam

I personally enjoyed BFN for what it was, yes I'm upset they stopped content updates on it since I spent full price on it when it was in Beta on PS4, I genuinely hope they one day go back to how it was, hopefully another 3rd person shooter since I've been dying to play a new one, GW2 is fun and all, but when you play it on PS4 it gets boring slowly, atleast we don't worry about hackers on it

The graphics for the charecrs in bfn look like they are from a bad mobile game the animations though are amazing and the characters look a lot better and more realistic in pvz gw2 and they look like great daptations into 3d walking shooting charecters the pea shooter looks fine

I was so sad when PVZ Adventures was canceled. I was having so much fun on it and honestly I'm still bummed

Had to check this video out after replaying and finishing PvZ1 on gamepass. Wanted to see what I was missing, not much but I do remember playing PvZ2 as a kid as well, i got a little tired from the micro transactions but ill check out those mods for sure

you probably should have talked a bit more about pvz adventures, i loved playing that game but it was removed really fast, one thing that i really liked about it is the game's visual, i think they managed to translate the pvz 1 plants into 3D very well

At 24:04 you could slow down the video so the comparison could be seen better. I play a lot of Clash Royale but struggled to see the similarities between the two. Other than that great video hope to see more from you.

I still actively play pvz heroes and fully believe it to be the best game concept in the series and its an absolute shame they stopped supporting it so long ago (especially considering they still have both ads and $100 microtransactions left in the game, thanks ea)
