I can't believe that was Birmingham airport... It's a 12 min drive from me and a 30 min walk...

I work in aerospace, the checks and safety protocols on parts that go into engines are so stringent that this astonishes me. We talk about defects that deviate by microns that get chucked in the bin and to think that in the body of the aircraft they didn’t have that level of defect check is terrifying.

Planes are really really fast and every part is subject to extreme forces and pressure even though you don't see any signs of it, because metal does not complain or creak till the final moment when it just breaks. At those speeds ( even with trains which have huge momentum rather than great speed) one mechanical failure in a critical place can lead to several others which, depending on what failed can lead to a total disaster. That's why parts used in planes and trains are manufactured to very strict and detailed specifications.

That last segment with the damaged little plane landing on the freeway was a beautiful piece of precision landing.

It is not something you could mend in the time it took her to enter the plane. If only she had mentioned it to the air hostess that lost her life! A similar thing happened during an emergency when someone noticed the faulty engine was left on and the pilot switched off the good engine. Sometimes visual observation is better than maintenance and electronic equipment. Even here the light to show the wheels were down was faulty.

Yeah, people just accept everything they see and go along with it because others are. Speaking out these days is something that's frowned on.......which is why most don't. She could have saved so many from experiencing that mess, if she was just adamant about reporting the craziness that she saw. I have no idea why she turned a blind eye.

@@janice8514 of course it's their fault.....but don't you think that it wasn't a coincidence that she saw it?!? That of all the passengers that boarded that plane, her eyes just happen to see and question that?!? Just because someone has a title/whatever job description, doesn't mean that they're 100% responsible and can be trusted to do what's expected of them. It's one thing to up and jump to poor conclusions about something someone and cause havoc that makes you look foolish vs just bring to the crews attention something as such that obviously looks like it will cause harm. Often times, we all are placed and made privy to things for reasons that go beyond serving self/self serving interest. I'm sure that she feels guilty about that woman losing her life.......something that she cannot change. Which is why when it comes to making choices.......it's important to make the right ones. As no one knows how their choices (especially when they're irresponsible) will play a role in their life......once Time fast forwards.

My heart is breaking from thinking of that poor woman. 😣😢💔 Thank God Almighty in the second part the Captain survived!!!

That poor pilot. That is like a literal living nightmare being nearly sucked out of a plane so high up but being held in by a piece of metal and a few of the crew on board. I have nightmares of crap like that happening, falling off roller coasters, etc. Glad he lived. What a story to tell the grand kids though. Now that poor flight attendant, what a nightmare as well. I can only imagine what was going through her mind in her final moments. I would have tried to grab her hand, arm, leg anything and hold on to her for dear life. May she rest in peace.

How that pilot survived being dragged outside the window is incredible, and incredible that the crew held on to him the whole time without giving up and assuming he was dead, man he’s lucky to be alive

A few factors we have the diligence of the crew but another aspect is with freezing temps the human body essentially slows down and in the long term its a bad thing and is often fatal especially if your core temp gets way to low, frostbite not withstanding. But in the short term though in a life threatening situation that reduction to your core temp can slow your heart rate down which reduces circulation and oxygen consumption which can buy you needed time in a situation where your survival is heavily dependent on those things. I even heard of a story where one victim who would have died from injuries occurred from an attempted homicide survived because they were thrown into a ice cold lake slowing the blood loss from the reduced circulation caused from the cold. But generally speaking as it goes with such situations one mantra always plays in my head, you never assume the worst.

Good on you both! Never ever unfastened your seat belt. Keep your hands ready for any emergency. I was in a ight once where the two forward wheels were stuck to the right. Preparing for an emergency landing, the stewardess warned me to take my hand off the emergency door. I yelled back, " Make me" so she just gave up. We landed safely, but my hand was glued to the emergency door handle.

In 1993 I was in a 2 seater plane when the engine quit. Luckily we were near the airport...pretty scary. That plane from 1967 never flew again. The pilot remained so calm. God is good!

Delta Flight 191 trying to make a stop in Dallas on an L.A. leg. Got caught in wind shear, which literally pulled the plane out of the sky. It clipped a car on hwy 114 and decapitated the driver instantly before crashing into a huge water tower and erupting in flames. Lots of casualties. I live in Dallas and will never forget that day.

I see a big crack in the plane in which I'm going to fly. Well, I assume the crew knows all about it, so I'm just going to keep quiet, not tell anyone and find my seat. I mean really, what could possibly go wrong? Oh. That's what.

wow , the one with the captain half body outside of the cockpit that miraculous survive and 5 months later he started to work was an amazing history.

Lesson learned. If ever I travel again on an airplane and see even a small crack on a window, I should tell the flight attendant.

I don’t understand how she would just assume they knew. I would have alerted everyone and likely not boarded. Nervous flyer here.

The pilot survived the crash was a miracle, doggedness of the crews trying to save his life is noteworthy, the crew calming down the passengers during the turbulence is significant.

😨 The skin is the thickness of two credit cards...let that sink in while you await boarding that flying beer can! I was about 17 yo and was flying out of Atlanta, I was sitting just behind the wings. Just after takeoff I watched the wing catch on fire and was pretty sure that wasn't normal, but I was thinking I'm just a kid, they won't listen to me. The sweet stewardess saw my face, she thought I was scared and was going to comfort me...I pointed out the window and asked if it was supposed to be on fire...She ran straight to the cockpit and we were turned back to the airport for an emergency landing. It doesn't matter what the circumstances, if you see something that doesn't look right, for heavens sake say something!

A friend of mine was driving along the roadway and in the vicinity of the Teetaborro Airport in New Jersey, a small aircraft suddenly appeared through his windshield. He managed to make it out alive but he was so disfigured that even scrambling around became a chore. He got some compensation but is mobility was compromised.

The Pilot of this aircraft incident was a guest speaker at one of our Navy Safety Stand Downs at NAS Barbers Pt in the 90's. He told us that the aircraft was bending and flexing, "porpoising" as he described it, which got worse as they descended. He also said that the only structural integrity was the seat rails along the main cabin deck.

Not really. I've worked for a handful of companies where the only important concern was cutting cost and increasing profit. In business, your largest expense is typically labor, thus cutting labor is the quickest route to reducing cost. Unfortunately, what too many executives forget is that their workforce is the very face and machine of their business. Stressing it in any way and then demanding remaining staff to carry on as if nothing has changed - or else, will only work for so long. And usually not long at all. So couple things like that with increasing work loads, responsibility, etc., tasks are rushed over. And when so many workers are running about trying to get their demanded tasks done, it is guaranteed that various details will be overlooked. This is amongst one of the most damaging business models to have taken hold of America over the past forty years. Everything suffers, even employee mentality drops. Resentment, stress, anxiety builds, and will eventually come out somewhere. And being that America has converted from a manufacturing based economy to a service based kind over the past few decades, you can see why customer service has plummeted so terribly. Low wages that have stagnated since the 80s (actually since 1978), loss of benefits, or scheduling below full-time to make them out of reach of people has been having a dire effect over the working class for decades. Mix all that with having to cope with the pandemic, while having to be at risk of their health, either because they are working in an area where health precautions are ignored, downplayed, etc., well... you do the math. Life is an algebraic equation, sometimes simple, sometimes not, but it is one just the same. These are major reasons why low paid workers are walking off jobs. We are just beginning to see what has been predicted would happen with labor, should the right mix of negatives appear. It's a wonder it took this long. I always wondered how American workers felt when each quarterly economic report they heard declared increasing profits for companies, and production at its highest, while wages remained stagnant. All that meant was Americans were working longer, harder, and earning less and less for it. That is the definition of stupid desperation. And it only works if you manage to keep your workforce in some form of anxiety or fear of job loss. Risk, anxiety, low-pay, no-advancement, etc. People are not machines, no matter what hustle culture would like to program us into believing. It's really not a difficult thing to figure out, when better paying jobs appear, then people will leave lower paying jobs, for them if they can. Especially if the work environment or culture is terrible too.

Maybe the boarding bridge had somehow damaged it after it had been checked? Or something else caused the damage after it was checked?

My brother pointed out a defect on a plane he had just boarded and they all had to move to a different plane. It was something to do with the wing flaps, if I remember correctly.

I love people like your brother. Often times when you point out things or call employees out on something, they tend to act all embarrassed and feel disdain, while trying to make said person feel like even though they did the right thing, they're wrong. 👀👀👀Too many folk have this thirst to win and be right. Oh sure. So when i was a kid i flew from Phoenix to Chicago to spend Christmas with family. There was bad weather for a most of the trip and a good bit of turbulence. I think we even got struck by lightning. Just before we began the decent, i noticed as i was sitting by the window over the right wing, the engine made a whistle sound that quickly diminished. A high to a low sound then nothing. I was a kid at the time, but one who was fascinated with flight and had several hundred hours on flight sim. So i knew what i just herd, it was a number 2 engine flameout, and it was completely shut down at this point. I calmly flagged an attendant and told her that this engine just stopped. She told me that she didnt think so and that everything was fine. I reassured her and anyone listening at the time that it would be fine, as i have stimulated landings with engine failures on this exact aircraft. She smiled and said ok, i was about 8 y.o. Just before landing she came back asking me how i knew all that and i told her i always wanted to fly and trained myself intensely. She then admitted that she talked to the pilot and he confirmed that my side engine had shut down. She was kinda scared and asked what would happen so i told her, most multiple engine aircrafts can technically fly just fine with an engine out,(slower and less efficient) but still able. Take off would be different. Anyway we decend to O'hare it was frozen runway🙀. As we touched down the fact that the left engine was the only thrust, and the runway was icy, as soon as we hit the ground the plane slid to the right, the left engines reversed thrust making the plane twist back to the left, then we skidded around a bit, then balanced out and slowly crept off the tarmac, and up to a gate. Everyone was fine. Never wana drift in a airline again, also had to give pilot props for landing us safe in those conditions. 😬 Theres my close call story.

I also found that offensive! My whole family did! They portrayed her almost like a clown flying off the plane as if it had been a joke! That was a woman who died a horrible death bc she hadn’t been strapped onto her seat since she was probably helping a passenger! It did not make me laugh at all!

People see things all the time that could clue in somebody about a coming disaster, but they're just a passenger, or they are in a hurry doing something else, it's not their job, etc. And disaster ensues. I think that's why they started that PSA of "If you see something, say something" to combat terrorism.

Honestly guys, things like this are rarely to happen, since the early 2000s, plane inspections has become more and more strict and procedural, so fear of something that the fuselage will blown up is reeeeally rare, but i hate to say this, the thing that always makes me nervous are weather, it's unpredictable even though we have weather forecast, when the fly becomes quite bumpy, you'll start to feeling it ahahaha.. Ah and another one, for you guys who also nervous flyer, DO NOT ever watch the air crash investigation! It'll make your anxiety even worse! Happy trails and safe flights everyone!

It's mind-blowing that the passenger who saw the crack before she boarded didn't think it necessary to mention it to the flight attendants. She just hopped on a plane with a crack in it!!!

I think all passengers would have been facing severe PTSD for the rest of their lives. If I were among those passengers, I would have a cardiac arrest before the plane is landing. A real nightmare!😱😱😱

When that plane crashed into the water, I saw so much people recording help them don’t record them💀

I have flown many times nationally and internationally. I have never been in an air crash, but there were a couple of close calls. I almost crashed in Detroit TWICE on very separate occasions, years apart. I'm no pilot, but each time something was wrong, I could tell, and I also could tell that the pilots MUST be fighting to keep the plane under control. Once we were on the ground and safely at the gate to disembark, I made sure to express my gratitude to the pilots for winning their fight with the aircraft.

@@thomassimpson9725 I totally believe in giving credit where credit is due. I'm a supervisor over others, and I practice that all the time. I totally appreciate all the flight attendants as well. You all put in some very hard air miles & long hours. I tried to give them a reason to laugh or at least smile. I was always ready to come to their defense if needed. It really saddened me that the flight attendant lost her life in this situation. She deserved so much better.

POV: You’re that 1 flight attendant

I was on a summer flight into LaGuardia in NYC where the landing was aborted twice because of microbursts, and we finally had to detour to New Jersey to land (worst cab fare of my life). Passengers were screaming, a few people needed the "air sickness bags" and I was terrified. Overhead compartment doors opened, and baggage tumbled out, but nobody was injured, just really scared. This was at least 20 years ago.

I lived on Maui when this happened. Very tragic, that the stewardess was retiring. When she was sucked out of the plane. The pilots are to be commended for landing the plane without crashing.

I can vividly remember reading about the Aloha Flight in Time Magazine. I was a kid by then, but I never forgot that legendary photo of the plane without a roof. This was probably the most amazing, incredible landing in the history of passenger aviation. The second most incredible landing in my opinion is Hapag-Lloyd flight 3378. On July 12th, 2000, 22km away from the airport in Vienna, at a height of 1200m, the engines stopped working and electricity went off because THERE WAS NO FUEL LEFT. The captain had miscalculated the consumption. Although he was an idiot and lost his licence afterwards, he then showed incredible skills by flying the then silent Airbus A310 like a glider, and indeed managed to land it on the airport. They touched ground 660m before the runway, between the signalling lights, and then slid across a field and the tarmac. Nobody was hurt, just in the ensuing panic, when the plane was evacuated, 26 passengers were slightly injured. Can you imagine this situation, when you sit in a plane where the engines just have stopped working and you fall out of the sky, seeing the city of Vienna coming closer and closer?

There's an incident like that that happened near my home town. A plane ran out of fuel because it wasn't loaded up with enough due to bad mathematics on the part of the fueling team. It ran out of fuel mid-flight from Toronto to Vancouver and wound up gliding about halfway near Winnipeg, my home town. The pilots realized at their rate of descent there was a ZERO percent chance they were making Winnipeg. which was their preferred because it had full emergency services, so instead they turned to a decommissioned air force base to use that runway to land. Unbeknownst to them, and to my father who was actually there the day it happened, it had been converted into a drag racing strip. Thankfully all of the racing had finished by that time, but there were still the local automotive clubs having a family barbeque as the plane came down for landing. If you want more information, look up the story. It's the story of the legendary Gimli Glider.

Props to captain for surviving and getting back out there 5 months later. I would be terrified to step foot back onto a plane

Yes, it's a miracle he survived. And to think the crew, thinking he was dead, almost let his body go, had not been for the thought of his body flying into the engine shaft, causing further plane damage. I say that was God who gave that thought, because I can't see them being in a 911 crisis mode, and having an analytic thought of the direction the body would fly to. But I was really glad that pilot survived, and he's got some story, to tell. No doubt though, most of the time he was being bounced around on the roof, he had gone into shock, unconscious, a way the mind is protected from the horrific things the body was going through. But I'm sure he remembers being sucked out the cockpit. That's like when I was hit by a car, years ago, jaywalking thru traffic, waiting for green light, and looking at last lane, looking clear, and just walked into it. Soon as I did I saw the car, going about 35mph, and I just froze, and was hit. Years later I began thinking the moment I froze, the angels must have came, to protect me, because I do not even remember the impact, or even felt any pain, at impact, just the car coming at that speed, about 20steps from me, and knowing it was too close to run from so I froze, like a deer in headlights. I do remember after freezing up, everything went completely black, in my mind, and when I woke up, about 5 or 10 minutes later, people were all around me, telling me they witnessed it, and would be my witness, but what was eerie, and why I felt angels had guarded me, was them telling me I had flown up in the air, after impact, and I knew the angels had kept my head from hitting the pavement. One of the ppl around me was the woman who hit me, crying profusely, saying how sorry she was. I kept reassuring her it wasn't her fault, but mine, for jaywalking. She tried to give me insurance settlement, but the way I was raised in church I just felt taking her money, when nothing was wrong with me that God wouldn't bless me for that. They did have to drive me in my first ambulance ride, to hospital, just to get checked out. And I was in and out hospital about 30 minutes, and all I wanted was to get to my job, where I was going when I got hit. I loved that job, and didn't want to lose it. My boss and coworkers were amazed to see me, because they'd heard of the accident, and was not expecting to see me back at work. Even though I had refused the woman insurance settlement she had contacted my boss, to get him into convincing me to take it. And he tried, and my coworkers tried, telling me things like even though I wasn't feeling pain then years later I might have trouble in that area. That really came true about 20yrs later I started getting a creeky feel in my right knee, point of impact, but when I do I just wear a stretch knee support, and it's alright. But back then, still refusing the money, I was not aware of the insurance law, that even if it was your fault, you could get paid, maybe had I known I would have accepted. But still I'm satisfied I didn't, because I can't get pass that woman's face crying so sad, when I wasn't shedding a tear. It's almost like even though I have no recollection or feel, of the impact, it's like she got a vivid memory of hitting me, and seeing me go up in air, and hitting the pavement. So by not taking any money, letting her know it wasn't her fault it would be easier for her to erase that bad memory, from her mind, than if a papertrail had been left, of insurance payment, which would have stayed a constant reminder, to her. I think God looks at things like this, in what type decision you'll make, and I've always felt God was pleased, with my decision, and God is who matters, to me.

I saw the story on the news about the Aloha Airlines flight losing its roof the NIGHT BEFORE I was flying to Hawaii from Los Angeles. I was taking United Airlines to Oahu, then hopping on a smaller Aloha Airlines plane for the short flight to Maui. When I got on the Aloha flight, I looked around and was a bit worried to see that it looked like my armrest was being held together with plastic cable ties. The flight was uneventful, but when we landed on Maui, that plane without its roof was sitting out on the tarmac. The name of the airline and it's logos had been painted over. It was an eerie sight, knowing that someone had died after being sucked out of that huge hole. 😞😟

I lived in Hilo then. Most of the injuries were windburns. It was some excellent piloting combined with exceptional luck that kept the casualties down. Aloha went out of business years later.

My boyfriend was an airline mechanic, my Dad a captain, my mom an attendant. We rehashed every airline incident around the dinner table.

The opening incident went wrong with the passenger who said nothing and just boarded. If I notice a fault with the craft before going on, I would turn around and go back to the first attendant. I would make sure everyone knows there's a serious problem.

hell yes ! that's just common basic logic, it astounds me how people can be so utterly naïve, they must live in a fantasy world. I've had similar things happen in a hospital setting, nurses trying to do some REALLY dodgy shit that could have cost me my life, they didn't know that I knew a thing or two about microbiology and human physiology, I had a huge open leg wound and they tried to wheel in this guy to my room with MRSA, the flesh eating bacteria ! I heard them say MRSA and I went full ballistic at them, boy did they move !

Makes me think, though, of when while giving it a go at nursing school, I observed a birth. During the labor I saw the pattern on the machine that I had read in my textbook indicated a possible cord around the neck so I did say something, but was dismissed. Guess how the baby was born?

"Common sense is only common, if you have some." (Quote by Me.) Some people just don't know any better. Someone can be as oblivious as: "If a truck can drive on the road without a fender, this plane should be Ok. They know what they're doing!" 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

that light plane landing on a busy moving freeway was pretty amazing skills.

Ex-BA guy here (1966/1973) About eight weeks before the Aloha airlines aircraft upper fuselage detached I flew with that airline to/from Maui, after seven+years of British Airways On boarding I was surprised to see the aircrafts skins de-laminating immediately behind the forward port passenger entry? I mentioned this to the cabin crew; they simply said it had been like that for some time, I boarded the flight which was without incident. So much for American aviation safety checks. American aviation safety checks appear to be about as thorough as American banking protocol checks, globally famous as worthless?. Of the British Airways captain's windscreen blowout; I didn't know the captain had managed to entangle his feet with the control column slowing his ascent to heaven just enough that others might save him, so thank you for that important detail. An aircraft of that sort does not have three stewards. Other cabin crew fronted two useful-looking young male passengers in the cabin; and said in as many words "you two; flight deck fast" on entering the flightdeck it was obvious the captain's legs needed useful hands upon them. These two young men subsequently joined British Airways initially as baggage handlers, but having been taken on; they can of course "transfer to other tasks within the airline" with the "very keenest support" from senior management......
