It goes even deeper than that... Every single character who has ever used a physical time machine had to "fail" (not fullfilling their role and lose their lives without making their mark on the world), at least once [some, many]. -> Even Okabe "dissapears" in the movie; plus whatever will happen on "0".

  • @TheRagingWizard

    @TheRagingWizard

Funnily enough, the physical time machine never really alters the timeline much. It can make tweaks here and there, but it's always the d-mails that do the most. This holds true, even in 0 (I've played the VN, and I'm curious how it will play out)

It's the way you see the story as a child that makes you think Dragon Ball is just Goku yelling. Look at the latest Pokemon episode, Dragon Ball arcs endings, Naruto conflicts, One Piece or Hunter x Hunter and come tell me these anime are shallow. Steins;Gate is an anime that forces you to think, hence why so many people feel in love with it. (for me, it was Tokyo Ghoul and Code Geass that did that) But once you start really thinking, then you can see the beauty in some the anime you often thought were just about "a guy screaming".

A commonly missed fact about Steins;Gate: When transferring world lines, only memories are altered, allowing feelings to remain the same. That's why Kurisu fell for Okabe so quickly in the Steins;Gate word line and the same reason why Mayuri immediatly understood the "Hikoboshi" reference in Steins;Gate 0. I don't ever see anyone bring this up so I thought it would be cool to share :)

It becomes a masterpiece after Okabe realises granting people their wishes is changing the world around him. I still remember the end of Ep 9 - when he realises the otaku culture has disappeared in Akihabara - one message changed the culture of an entire city. The thing that made the moment so amazing was the subtlety - stuff slowly kept changing around him and he didn't realise it till a whole city was affected. The emotions keep on piling on from then on. What an amazing show!

Despite our preferences, it doesn't mean we dislike the other's taste (I love watching Strawberry Panic).

It was heartwrenching, and even though I usually like tragic stories and darker endings at times, this was one of the few moments where I really hoped they could find a way to be together and transcend the tribulations and the divide they faced. This was the standout emotional moment for sure, after all that amazing buildup and Okabe's crushing epiphanies.

for context, im a thirty year old woman and first watched the show a couple years ago (when i was 27 i think) because it had high ratings. spoilers ahead: what impressed me about the series the most: going in blind i was expecting some kind of harem show with stereotypes after the first few episodes. all the stereotypes were there, genki girl, tsundere, pervert, quiet girl with big breasts... but then the show really got me with playing the tropes straight. the "boy looks and dresses like girl" character has actual gender dysphoria. tsundere girl becomes scared and starts to cry when being excesssively, comically yelled at by MC (instead of punching the MC like it would happen in other comedic anime.) the chuunibyou is a mask for coping. the silent girl suffers from crippling social anxiety and is suicidal. instead of leaving the love story ambigious so everyone can think mc gets together with their favorite respective waifu, they play the love story soooo straight, super romantic. playing the tropes straight (what would really happen if a character acted like this) gives the show such a heartfelt realism, i fucking loved all of that, never have i been reminded so much to not judge a book by its cover. rewatched it countless times, fav anime of all time. i think ouran high school host club did a similar thing, watched that as a teen and remember loving that as well for pretty similar reasons, so if anyone knows more stories like that please let me know. i think tamaki and okabe even had the same voice actor in japanese, lmao

A key distinction between VN okabe and anime okabe is just being able to hear Okabe’s thoughts to himself. Viewing everything through his perspective makes him even more empathetic. Something so interesting about him is that the Hyouin Kyouma personality is both a shield for him to protect his emotions and a weapon he uses to bolster his own confidence. It’s what he relies on when he doesn’t know what to do, it’s what he falls back on for confidence

When I first really started watching anime, about five years ago, when my youngest son was in junior high, I had mostly only experienced the standard ones on US tv. Things like Pokemon, DBZ, etc., which I had no use for. Of course, I'm 45, and I had watched some of the classics when younger, from Akira to Princess Mononoke, but they were movies, which I somehow compartmentalised from tv shows. I had no idea just how good, how deep some shows were, and how more new ones were getting like this. My first anime show was Death Note. That, obviously, is just an amazing psychological thriller, and absolutely fantastic series, and I was hooked. However, it was not long afterwards that I found Steins;Gate. There are no words to accurately describe what S;G is to me. In fact, I usually don't consider myself an anime fan, per se, but a fan of good storytelling, no matter the medium. When I refer to S;G as my favourite story ever, I do mean my favourite story, of any genre, medium, period, etc. Part of it is bias, as I am a layman student of Quantum Mechanics, specifically Quantum Cosmological origins, based in a Relative State (Many Worlds) Interpretation of QM, and a "Universal Wavefunction" (a la Hugh Everett III's take on the Schroedinger Equation), and a generally Physics minded individual. Now, that's not to say that I agree with all of the science in S;G. Of course not. It's; A) a show, which must take liberties, and; B) based on a ton of highly hypothetical QM ideas. However, the raw intellect showed by S;G is tremendous. Nevertheless, the most important part of good storytelling, is the actual storytelling. Steins;Gate has the greatest storytelling, in my opinion, to ever exist. It has the emotional depth that pulls you in, with a fairly well defined set of characters (though more so in the VN), and an actual world(s) that you can come to care for. This goes especially so, if you include S;G 0 (I know it has its detractors!), and think of any other possible worldlines that could possibly exist. (Yeah, I do that. The Relative Statist in me.) Ever since that first episode, and through all the re-watches, I can only fall more in love with Steins;Gate. Anyway, that's why I think it's not only the best anime, but by far, the greatest story ever told... Oh, and... He's a dude. Lol.

I’ve never felt such despair watching a show. This must be the first time I gave up all hope before the MC. *Spoilers* - - - - When he over and over tried to save Mayuri. I literally sat in my chair like “... there’s no way.. she can’t be saved. Maybe he should just stop trying and accept her fate..” and then finally Suzu came up with a solution, only for Okabe to find out that Kurisu would die instead. I couldn't believe how cruel it was. And now this year, we have to watch the life of the Okabe who gave up after killing Kurisu when he tried to save her the first time, the place where about everyone would’ve given up with all those past experiences.

Steins;gate was the anime that got me into this medium as well. Everything just pieced together so perfectly, the characters were amazing and the twists left me thrilled or broken. I felt the realisation that Kurisu had to 'die' from Okabe at the end to be the hardest hitting moment. Followed by Okabe's resolve to rescue her after failing once. I just had to watch the VN after finishing it which was only better than the anime. My biggest problem worth the anime is actually the second half after the VN, as each side members story felt rushed and shallow comparatively. Still it is my number 1 anime, and like you got me to continue watching more. Can't wait for Steins;Gate Zero, too bad I own no PS4 :(

Kurisu = Tsundere love interest. Mayuri = Moe Girl Daru = Fat otaku friend. But like your video describes all characters have so much more dimensions as the show goes on. Also the way they did the repeating time travel to save someone which is now used in so many anime Steins;Gate was the one who executed it best and you just reminded why this anime is one of my faves. Enough rambling keep up the good quality in your content you mad scientist Its so cool Sonuvabitch

I'd say Re:Zero and Steins;Gate did the "memory discrepancy" part equally well. Basically, both animes described how excruciating it must be to not share memories with people despite sharing certain bonds and having certain attributes in one version of reality, but not in the others. But that's because those two shows are based on the same theme, even though the mechanic is different, and Steins;Gate still comes on top as the better show because it's actually completed and has less flaws in general.

I personally liked steins gate the first time I finished it, but didn't have it in my top 10 because I thought the first 12 eps were relatively slow and boring to justify the phenomenal latter half. But after a second viewing, I found that I actually enjoyed the witty banter between the characters more in the beginning than anything. Idk maybe it's because I didn't try to view them as real people during my first viewing and only after finishing the first half for the second time, that I really learned what made the characters tick, annoyed or overjoyed. And in doing so enhanced my experience of the second half. But I can also see how some of the characters could rub someone the wrong way, so I guess to each his own. But yeah I'm glad this anime reinforced your path of being an otaku, cause if not then we wouldn't have these amazing videos.

The appealing of Stenis;Gate is the meta narrative about the otaku and geek culture while being a well written sci-fi mistery, so I can see why people find the first episodes boring, they don't connect that much with the characters, but even if you aren't on the otaku culture you can love the characters since they are so well written with an excellent voice acting so it's an odd "I get it but I don't", personally I found every episode amusing and fun to watch from beginning to start, not only when the series "gets good".

My reaction exactly. I actually love slice-of-life shows, provided they have well-developed characters. That's by the way the reason I believe Evangelion has stood the test of time: the characters are developed, interesting and complex human beings, with human reactions, instead of being the unidimensional stereotypes so common in anime, especially in the fantasy genres (including sci-fi). The moment I watch an anime episode and find each character will have only a single personality trait (the moody girl, the shy girl, the tsundere, and so forth), I immediately give the series up as boring, regardless of the premise being interesting. Because I know that alone, without well-constructed and convincing human characters will not interest me.

Best moment of the series for me was right when he discovers his folly of wanting to do the experiment. When the screen turned like blood when he saw the masked threat for his friends lives. Racing back to his apartment to be filled with joy to discover them still alive and to stop the experiment. I guess what appealed to me was the brief period of insanity of flooding emotions to save his friend. I'll be honest in that I've always was appealed to these moments of cognitive dissonance to be overshadowed by this immense weight and the flooding emotions resulting. So like when naruto, and bleach when having to rely on their multitude of power reserves fueled by their emotions, any type of anime that does this short absence of rational for one solution and done correctly are always my favorite moments. When I was younger I just thought I liked the spectable but a little older and I now see myself in those intense emotions of pain.

This the best thing I saw today. Even though i watched the series years ago but over time I re-watched it many time. Every-time i watched the show, the love for the series went on increasing. This video is what I can relate at many levels. Thanks, really really thanks for making this video. Steins gate is something I can relate so deeply. This video is why you earned yourself a subscriber. Keep up the good work. El Psy Congroo "The world is in palm of our hands" -Lonely Observer.

Paused and liked the video as soon as you said the first "slower" episodes are necessary to set-up the future events. THANK YOU!!! I'm so glad at least 1 review gets it right.

Although I loved Steins;Gate, I think the anime that connected with me the most'd be HxH, and Fooly Cooly. And I have no idea why.

If you really like analyzing things, honestly, there's no better show than Fooly Cooly. I highly recommend that you give it a watch, if and when you can. It's only 6 episodes. I'm not even saying you should do videos on it, I've been watching your channel for a while now, and I legitimately think you'd enjoy it. Though... some details do pass by quickly, since it never really bothers to dump exposition on it much. I personally love that, but I can't really vouch for you. And, hell, if the writing fails to hit, ya got kickass animation and music.

Peasham Well, thanks! It's cool that people have a feel for the type of stuff I like through my videos. I've actually been meaning to look into FLCL for a while. And the fact that it's so short is definitely appealing. Easy to knock out in an evening if I wanted to.

I do feel I should tell you, though, that, while I'd say the details of this show are incredibly human, the brunt of it's wacky, crazy, fast-paced, giving references. and parodies left and right, even changing art styles at times, and I haven't really seen anything that would indicate you'd exactly enjoy that. Not saying that you won't, I just can't, with complete confidence, say that you will.

My favorite moment was at the end when Suzuha came back and Mayuri asked what it is. Okabe immediately answered before she could answer her question. You see how dark Okabe is portrayed when he tells them it's a time machine. It feels really melancholic, because it's seriously the beginning of the end. The last two episodes really had an impact on me.

Loved the overall review of the anime. I'm honestly glad you made this, it felt awkward at first when I finished Stiens;Gate. I was so connected to Okabe and Kurisu that it almost felt real, and like the anime opened your eyes on the unseen struggles of others, it also imprinted the way I look at the world. Maybe I'm happy to know I'm not the only person who was so connected with the anime.

Steins gate is the best anime I have ever seen, after it finished i just wanted more kurisu and more okabe But then steins gate 0 started... It was almost as good as the prequel but it has been almost impossible for me to smile without kurisu. Even if it had a good ending it didn’t really feel good, because of how sad okabe was Even if it was just a theoretical universe line that didn’t happen at the end, it was too sad Great video, caught all the thoughts I had after watching steins gate

it happened the same thing to me, the fact that ST0's Okabe didn't get to see Makise once again left me devastated, like, I'm glad that the original Makise and Okabe got to be together at the end with Makise and Mayuri alive, but the other worldline was just so cruel and unfair to its characters, idk, is sad that ST0 Okabe got the worse and even still he didn't see Makise one more time.

Please don't ever stop making videos like these. You've quickly become one of my favorite content creators for the why's and how's good anime works. And the way you approach the subject with such an empathetic approach instead of the normal technical approach others have taken definitely makes your breakdowns stand out and provide better insights for aspiring story tellers like myself to reflect upon when we go to create our worlds for others to enjoy. All in all, thank you for being awesome!

The anime that got me into the medium was Death Note, way back in the day. I remember having a strong lingering emotion about the show after I finished it. I’ve watched dozens of animes since, but only this show (and code geass) have left me with the same strong lingering emotion. I can’t get over how sad some of the character arcs are in S;G.
