A few things : Sybil 'mother knows and doesn't mind that her girl will run to "Mr. Glass." The episode in the elevator when he gets upset by a lady sneakingly staring at his feet suggests that his feet are mutilated. That's why he kisses beautiful innocent little girls' feet . Sybil yellow swim suit is in direct opposite of blue that he is wearing. (Innocence opposite to an injured war veteran).. Then, of course, sun of the resort, sunburned skin of his wife, mother applying sun cream (to get more tan sun tan!) - in direct constrast to Seymour very pale skin.. Sun here as a symbol of materististic enjoyment. All these oppositions prepare the reader for the final scene..

The girl was not a stranger. She is jealous because he let another little girl sit next to him and he reprimands her for an unkindness he saw her do. She is very young, I think 3 years old and I saw kissing her feet as a spontaneous act of tenderness.. Salinger’s other stories of Seymour show a serious, sensitive person, not a creep. This story is important for being the death of Seymour.

This is an excellent analysis! I always interpreted the banana fish as a metaphor for the tortured soldier as well. You're clearly a very intelligent young man, I look forward to more content (I know I'm late, but still). Subbed!

Kissing a child's feet is a catholic way of seeking redemption though the innocence I don't think it's supposed to be creepy idk just a thought

At 0.38 this reviewer, referring to the child Sybil, says she runs along the beach - her parents not realzing she's gone. Wrong! Sybil's mother tells her to run along as she's going back to the hotel with a friend for a martini. I didn't bother reading the rest of the review after that, but my 2 cents worth is that the banana fish is a metaphor for America's post-war consumerism - and, to use a Holden Caulfield word - phoniness. Society is a glutton and gets captured by its own greed.
