In this video we will explore the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of spiritual sickness. In his work, “The Genealogy of Morality,” the concept of spiritual illness involves activities where a living being seeks to undermine the conditions of its own health and vitality. Such a spiritual sickness is most prominent within ascetic religions like Judeo-Christianity and Buddhism where individuals try to suppress their bodily impulses or to withdraw into solitude and renounce the world.
When an organism not only obstructs but deliberately hinders fundamental life processes, it can be deemed biologically sick in the most profound sense. Such a sickness, if it were ever to become widespread, as Nietzsche thinks it has in western civilization, would pose an existential risk.
While modern psychology might be critical of the idea of spiritual pathologies, it is undeniable that we are currently facing a mental health crisis. The current mental health crises might mean that the idea of spiritual sickness is more relevant than ever before.
