A Path to Becoming a Superintendent

In this video I go over how my day has started and then I interview one of our newer hires. We talk about where he started, what he's doing, and how it's preparing him to become a full fledged superintendent.

Great video! currently in the trades and majoring in construction management and energy management wanting to be a supe one day. The guys respect bosses who were in the trades and supes who don't pretend they know how to do their jobs way more than the bosses who think they are better than everyone. Nothing is better than a supe who respects us and wants to help us, shows a lot about who they are as a person. Great video!

Thanks Josie! I think that’s why I have such a good rapport with the guys I work with. I try to be upfront about wanting to learn from the guys. I also try to help in the field where I can and they definitely appreciate that. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

Do you feel that you have a good work life, and home life balance? Going into Construction Management in college I want to know how it is, to see if this career path is for me.

It honestly depends on the company you work for. For the most part of the construction industry, you can expect 10-12 hour days. The time put in really depends on the project size. At my previous company, the project I was on was over $800M. I put in a minimum of 10 hours every day. With these big companies, there’s a culture around putting in crazy hours. But where I’m at now, if my work is done, than I’m done. So you can definitely find balance, it all just depends on the company you choose.

Working as a laborer right now it’s my first week, my company (frame to finish GC) has kept bringing up their interest to make me/train me into the role of a site supervisor. It seems that they really like me and my experience and are eager to train me and have me shadow site supers till I can get promoted. I think they are doing as much as they can on their part but what can I do on my part? I’m always asking questions when shadowing, or trying my best when being a laborer. Prior experience is carpentry specialist in the army, plus some certs and other laborer experience. Like I said, first week with this company but things are moving quick for me and I just wanna make sure I’m doing everything I can. Basically what would you do in my position? I want that position as quick as I can while actually learning everything I need to learn to be good at it. Any courses you recommend?

If you don’t have your OSHA 30, I’d highly recommend getting that. Google is a great resource as well. Whenever I see something I don’t know about, I do my research on it. Also, if there are any trade specific books, I’d get copies of those. I have the Ugly’s reference book and I’ve been studying that when I get free time. So just trying to absorb information where you can will really set you forward.
