A Once in a Generation Show? - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series Review

Ойын-сауық

I can't believe it has taken me this long to watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But, with that said, I am sure glad that I finally did. From a show I did not know much about, it has quickly turned into one of my favorite shows that I have watched over the last few years. It is truly a special show and worth watching if you haven't already. With that said, what are your thoughts on Buffy? Let me know, down in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Buffy is the show that I look back on and think, "this is why netflix needs to stop cancelling shows after just one or two seasons". Imagine if Buffy had been cancelled after one season. So many TV tropes, experimental episodes, fight choreography and directing choices we consider the norm in shows nowadays would just simply not exist.

I think you can say that about any streaming service show. Or how shows only have 8-12 episodes per season nowadays. Shows aren’t allowed to have growing pains any more to find their footing. Thanks for the comment!

Buffy was also a big part of the trend towards tv shows surpassing movies in telling long in depth stories. Strong season long story arcs weren't common yet. By the time Walking Dead came along, it had become THE thing. In my mind I see Buffy as the blueprint for a TV vs. movie revolution.

Buffy spawned a whole revival in vampire and supernatural shows on TV, especially those targeted for the younger audience. Vampire Diaries, for example, took a lot from Buffy and Angel. Plus the Twilight movies took a lot as well.

I don't think so. Buffy did have an influence on TVD and True Blood as TV shows (they were originally books), but I give The X-Files more credit in terms of making the sci-fi/horror/fantasy genre more lucrative on TV. Sure, you have Star Trek, Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, but they were cult shows.

@@Madbandit77 I’d argue Buffy and Angel are cult shows too. True Blood not as much, just because it was on HBO and it was popular because it was very mature. The Sci-fi genre is very popular but there are many shows that are still niche. Sometimes people perceive them to be bigger than what they are, just because they’re involved in the fandom. I had watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the movie and remember when this show was announced. I originally watched just to see how bad it was going to be, to only fall in love with it. I believe Season 7 didn't wrap up things more because there were talks of possible spin-off shows with either Willow or Faith and the knew they were going to continue the Buffyverse through Dark Horse Comics.

Thank you for pointing out that the heroine Buffy has her flaws and that this makes her a three dimensional, relatable character. Often, somehow, writers fail to remember this important point. The lady is either an angel or an annoying bitch, but never reralistic. Not sure whom to thank for Buffy's progressive character writing, though.

I was put onto Buffy by two of my then-teen children so I was about 37 or 38. One of them had a slightly-pirated DVD of Buffy up to the end of season 2 which I watched and was hooked. I afterwards watched it weekly until the end. And I bought the whole series on DVD which I've not watched for a while but will definitely do. So, yes, I loved Buffy (but mainly Willow). It was tremendously well done. I agree somewhat with your rating of each season, there were peaks and troughs but every season had some excellent shows and storylines. It was great TV and still holds up really well.

I get why people dont dig season 4, but I like it. "Hush" is easily a top 5 episode of the entire show. And with episodea like "Fear Itself" and "Something Blue" theres definitely fun to be had. Personally Season 1 is far and away the weakest. I still love it, I grew up with Buffy. But watched with hindsight its clear Season 1 was very much about the show finding its feet. The special effects and fight choreography are pretty bad 😂. And having only 12 episodes the seasons arc is nowhere near as strong as all the following seasons, all of which had 22 episodes and dedicated more episodes and story to the overall season arcs. What saved season 1 is the writing and characters which even in the shows infancy were clearly its strongest points and gave the show traction and a fanbase to go forward.

It has some of the most fleshed out characters in tv , the writing is brilliant, and even though it is about vampires it is so relatable. There is no other show that can top Buffy for me . Also I ve met a bunch of the cast at cons and they are truly the nicest people ever as well!

Best TV show ever. Many think s5-6 better than s2-3. You talk about s123 as if they are of the same quality they are not, in everything I've seen thinks s5-6 better than s1. S4 suffered a direction change as actress playing the big bad decided to leave. Also, as Joss has pointed out s4 has some of the best episodes. Some think s7 is best. It's about power and leadership ans is more about the season arc than it is the story of the episode.

I understand why S4 is ranked so low by so many; however, it's my favorite season. Spike comes back and is hilarious. The best silent episode - in all of TV. The best dream episode - in all of TV. The best Buffy comedy (Something Blue). The last season of Christophe Beck's music. It's a great show and we can all find different things to like about it.

I enjoyed watching the whole run with my two sons, then eight and twelve, during the first lockdown. It was my first viewing too, and I loved it. Nice introduction, but the idea that the first three seasons were 'Peak Buffy' is, I think, not one that most fans would agree with. To me, it only started to hit its stride during season three. Lastly, I'd argue that the first mention of Buffy's sister is one of the most truly shocking moments in television history.

I initially watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I was 14 years old. I just re-watched the entire series at the age of 34 and it still holds up. For me, my favorite era is S4-S7. I loved Buffy maturing into a responsible adult and leader, Spike slowly becoming a good guy, Anya being hilariously inappropriate, Willow becoming a powerful witch, Xander finding success after a lifetime of being seen as a failure, and the complicated Buffy-Spike relationship. The early seasons are great, but the characters don't feel as fully evolved as they would in later seasons. Angel in particular is really bland up until the halfway point of Season 2. Not going to spoil anything as you said you haven't seen the spin-off yet, but I feel like Angel didn't fully come into his own as a character until he got his own show. I'm one of the few people who likes the Angel series more than BTVS, so you still have some excellent TV to look forward to.

An interesting project would be to produce the 'missing' episodes from season one[there were only 12, as it was a replacement, if it had been a full season there would have been 22 episodes], you would have to re-cast the core four[Buffy, Willow, Xander and Cordelia], my thought is to offer SMG the role of Joyce and perhaps bring back Anthony Head as Giles for continuity with the original series. I think it would be an ideal project for a limited series.

Although it isn't commonly mentioned, the truth is that Buffy (which I love) was one of many shows that were produced at that time in an attempt to follow the tremendous success of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its first spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. Buffy was a fantasy action show more than anything else, and prior to HTLJ, an action fantasy show full of monsters and magic and demoms and gods and swords and so forth, replete with humor a superheroes, really didn't exist. When everyone tried to do what Herc and Xena were doing, Buffy was one of them, and almost certainly was the most successful. Herc, Xena, Buffy and Angel have a special place in my head.

Eh.. maybe from the television studios point of view, but not from the writers or producers. The movie came out three years before Xena went on air, so the concept already existed. The action (while fun and a big part of the show) is always secondary to the characters and themes of the show. The monsters are all metaphors for the challenges we have to face in high school and growing into adulthood - the idea that high school is hell. One of my favorite quotes from the show is: "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave, live" While Xena did have a great redemption arc, the themes and metaphors of the show never seemed to be the primary purpose of the show like they are with Buffy - granted it has been a long time since I have watched it, so perhaps I am misremembering?

@@amandabaker4678 The studio's point of view is what I'm talking about, and the WB's point of view. I'm saying Buffy, the television show, was not created in a vacuum. It was a movie that wasn't very successful, and that no one expected to be anything after it came out. Half a decade later, amidst a slew of shows emulating Hercules and Xena (Tarzan, Conan, Robin Hood, Roar, Sinbad) they remade the concept to be more like what had become the trend.
