A New Year With The Word

We started the new year with an exploration of the word - the Word made flesh, and the words we use each day. Why are words so central for God’s design for our world? Can the creative acts of speaking and writing provide a window into what it means to be created in the image of God? And in these times, in which words often seem to be devalued, is there a place for the slow, deep language of poetry?
Malcolm Guite, poet, Anglican priest, and scholar, joined us for our 100th Online Conversation on January 5, to begin our new year of conversation together.

“Deer” Malcolm: Someday I hope I get the opportunity to tell you the “deer story”. For now, I just want to say it is so good to see you and hear your voice! It is an important voice crying out in a cacophonous wilderness, but I am so thankful for your wisdom, courage, and all your incredible effort. You have been a mentor and an inspiration for me for several years now. You always find a way to say so many things my heart longs to hear. Keep fulfilling every mission--Priest, Poet and Musician! Glad you’re not a politician, but it would be a miracle if they would listen! Your brother Reid from Canada, but hanging out in Mexico. Had to escape the cold and snow!

A great reminder of the weight of words! I'm grateful for the recording since I couldn't be there live. Several of my friends messaged to tell me that Malcolm mentions my work near the end 😁 In case you're curious, here is the New Year lyric he referred to: I saw a flock of geese fly north in the waning of the year and questioned their uncommon course and wondered why and where as the travelling song of the winged throng still echoes in my ears.
