    I absolutely LOVE the slice design. As a mainly retro console player, I appreciate the vibes of the add ons like MegaCD, GBA player etc so i thought 6:58 was a superb option. Although PC player these days, I think I would pick up just a board and design my own case, as space is an issue in my desk, I’d go as small as possible.

    the master system controller is an interesting one, given that the system itself has a physical pause button. what would be cool is if you did a pass-through cable, perhaps not just strictly for the master system, with four or five buttons on it which could be mapped to system buttons like pause, reset, etc.

    Real nice project! I've made a 2×9-pin adaptor myself... but had wired the ports directly to the GPIO pins of an AVR microcontroller. Worked for a while until the chip fried, so yes... overcurrent protection is probably a good idea. :) Mine supported Atari joysticks and Mega Drive gamepads, but 6-button recognition didn't work every time. The state machine got stuck somewhere believing it was a 3-button gamepad. Experimented with Amiga/Atari mouse support but didn't find it worthwhile now that modern mice are so more precise. Would have wanted to support the CD32 gamepad, but couldn't get hold of any to work with.

    I think the dock is rather expressive if you compare it to the price of for example the mms. It's just a pico with some wiring. I don't know how much of it is open, but with some skill and spare pico could build your own, especially if you only need to support a specific controller.

I do appreciate it's small run and the amount of work that must have gone into it. but for me the price point is way too high just so I can play amiga games with reduced latency or use a tank mouse on workbench.. I'd have paid £35-£40 but no more. sorry guys. having said that.. i really hope it's a success, the more sold might encourage a price reduction :)

  • @Viking_Cookie
    @Viking_Cookie Жыл бұрын

    Hope there's a revision with Saturn ports, or otherwise is Saturn compatible, it's 9 pins so I assume it could be added to the current model but I assume identifying the attached device (where it isn't a standard Saturn pad) would not be that simple. The Saturn->USB adapters I've seen (and the one I own) only seem to support basic Saturn pads and not the 3D analogue pad or the racing wheel, and I'm guessing it's because they don't have the capability to identify them as different devices from the standard pad. While the 3D pad is most commonly associated with NiGHTs it's my favourite way to play Sega Rally Championship, and being able to use it on my real Saturn, the MiSTer and other devices would be really cool. Richard also mentions the Mega Drive 6-button pad and its complex design enabling the additional 4 buttons (including mode). If you guys fancy making an MD 6-button interface like the ones Monster Joysticks make, so you can make your own 6-button arcade stick for the original MD, I'd be very interested in that. Sadly it seems there are no products that let you do it with 6 buttons and even Monster Joystick's is just a 3 button interface. I appreciate it's sort of the opposite of what you're doing here though, I just thought it might be a way to build on the knowledge developed around how the 6-button pad communicates button presses.

    I love that you correctly identified the 9 pin D-Sub as a DE9. It probably should be plastic, but I know they’re more expensive and it probably won’t wear the plastic plugs that badly. The 15 pin I think you called a DE15, but it’s the larger A-shell D-sub, so it’s a DA15. A DE15 (or DE15HD) would be a VGA connector.

  • @therealjpster

    @therealjpster

    Richard said 700 nanoseconds. I think he meant 700 microseconds. That’s still very impressive given the 1000 Hz USB polling rate. I suspect that number has some error bars on it because it depends where you line up with the next USB poll. Still, it’s impressive.

    @@therealjpster yeah, that made me scratch my head for a little while. i know the pico (overclocked) can respond to nanoseconds timings, but processing and translating the signals from the controllers so fast is somewhat truly hard, but in the end it's not really needed. anything close or lower to that 1ms is very impressive and a testament to the pico's flexibility and their engineer's skills. but now we want more!!!!

    Really nice and well thought but at this price (around £100 if you factor in an enclosure) I'd expect it to cover more grounds . All major consoles peripherals of the 8 bits - 16 bits era should be supported. I'm sure we will get there though but I have doubts about this model being able to be kept in line with further revisions without the need for buying adapters.

    I have not tried to check out the source code for this device (if it is available?), but I heared here that some of the latency is caused by debouncing logic? If so, have you considered "asymmetric" debouncing? Idea is that whenever you see a button press, you register it immediately, but to "release" the button, then you have a counter to count enough consecutive release states to actually register the button to be released. Usually when you see any "noise" on button signal, it means that somebody is physically doing some touchy-touchy with it anyways. And on the other hand, releasing the button is usually less time-critical activity on gamepads. Just food for thought. Maybe you already are doing it. :) Great work!

    I'm thinking these came out in a time around the start of the USB 1.0 craze around windows 95c,d,3 and win 98.. today you be battling to get them to work unless they were made to run on a a new pc of today from the POV of 8 and 16 bit controllers, most ran in a 9 pin serial when talking about sms, mega drive, NES and SNES. Can't comment on what was functional on c64, c128, tandy trs-80, amiga prior to commodore and amiga after purchase of amiga by commodore I'm basing this from my battle station II not sure what will be compliant with your break out board connection though with some fighting games you will likely be needing to support both 2 and 4 player games If i was so inclined I would consider a multi tap option with a 1 or 2 usb input port 4 port controller output for sms-dc, nes-switch, xbox-one x, ps1-ps4pro

    I'm torn. Part of me would love unique versions of this for different controller ports, but the other part of me thinks it would be better to just offer pin-out compatible dongles for specific controllers. I can't help but feel wasteful to create an entire new board just to do the same thing but have a SNES controller port on the front. I think I'd prefer just having a SNES to DB9 dongle instead.

    This looks great, a bit pricey but I get it offers a lot. So, if I plug an atari 2600 paddle in it, I can plug this to raspberry pi running mame and play using it as a spinner in arkanoid?Or say the amiga mini, will it work on one using two joysticks for two players?

    VCS paddle will be suboptimal for Arkanoid, as the game expects infinite rotation to be available. There's no concept of position, and Arkanoid spawns every new paddle at the center of the playfield regardless of where the controller is. You want the Atari Driving Controllers, which are sadly much less common.

    So when I saw the 15-pin port, I was wondering if PC analog joysticks would work with it. It looks like they'd need a gender-changer, though. Another 9-pin analog device is an Apple II joystick (again, needing a gender-changer). Among PC joysticks, some actually used a digital interface through the game port, needing custom drivers.

    It's not directly compatible with the Analogue PC 15 way port, but we are looking at this as we have had a lot of people ask about it. Thanks for also asking as it makes if more likely we will try to make something for PC Flight stick users... stay tuned for more updates.

    Since the DE9 connector carries 5 volts on one of the pins (usually pin 7). Are there any configs that changes which pin that carries the 5 volts and thus can damage the system you are connected to if you select the wrong system on the CTRLDock?

    @@RMCRetro the video implies that the dock is protected from misconfiguration. But what about the device you plug in? If you push the wrong voltage to the wrong place on a control pad you might fry it. It's unlikely with those old dumb things, but as mentioned in the video, some pads were a little more intelligent with serial protocols and such.

    The Mac mouse's connector has the opposite gender to Amiga/Atari/Amstrad. But you should be able to find the pinouts online and solder an adaptor to it pretty easily. All of them are "bus mice" with 5V quadrature signals.
