My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off KZread? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

Wow that new bike looks like the “Rad mini step through” that also comes in white , same seat and grips and handle under seat ( very useful) though the Rad ( made in the USA) has smaller wheels size, great commuter bike, hardly any suspension, so not so great for trails, but solid as a rock. Glad you have a bike at this time, summer in Paris is the best time for bikers. Question: do you have to give it back.? or is it a freebie?....I would take it to a bike store for a tighten up and tuning.

I know it is not as sci fi looking as the other one (I do not miss the Cylon power up and down noise on the other bike, though, amongst a lot of other things). I kinda got the feeling you don’t think this new one is as sexy as the other one. I gotta say, though, the retro vibes are awesome and it’s so good seeing you on a working bike! I hope you keep it and use the refunded money to invest in more tech you need for all the ventures you have going on. You might really grow into loving this bike. I hope it works for you!

That is the perfect bike for commuting in a city. The pass through style will be really appreciated when you load up some panniers or a basket in the back Also nice to be able to take the battery in to charge The vanmoof was stylish but not really practical This bike has suspension and that upright style will be better for safety. Try shifting to a low gear before going up a hill. You will notice a difference.

That looks like a really nice city bike whereas the Van Moof was a road style bike. For riding around Paris, it will be more comfortable but less so on long rides out of the city. It looks like the saddle is slightly nose up. You definitely want the saddle to be level or it will put pressure where you really don't want pressure, at least on longer rides. If it's nose down, you'll tend to slide forward.

Himiway is a very similar clone of my Rad Power (even the same leather handle grips) except there is no twist throttle ala motorcycle style throttle. This allows you to ride it like an electric motorcycle with no pedaling (if desired). THIS IS SO NECESSARY!!! I also have the 5 levels of boost, but the throttle on the right handle is SO awesome. The motor on the back wheel looks a lot smaller too. Maybe Himiway has a model one step up from this? Don't buy this bike, you need not only boost, but throttle (and a larger motor).

So when is Jess going to open her bike shop as a side gig? Also: forget the chain lube; use chain wax. It's much more involved to put on, but longer lasting and doesn't attract dirt.

Salut, Jay! Oh my! This is kinda freaky. I just ran discovered you via your video with Nathaniel Drew. But, that is not the part I find freaky. I've never, ever met anyone who is actually from Pullman. My sister went to WSU, but to come across someone who is originally from Pullman? That lives in Paris!?! No way! And, to put this all in perspective, j'habite à Yakima!

A couple of things. First, Jess looks FANTASTIC! And probably is but I couldn't say. I am an older married woman who doesn't give women a second glance except in solidarity, or at any woman who would bite the head off of her sister and not even break stride. I hear about Man Crush, is that the right word when a straight man crushes on his man friend? Giving this topic excessive amounts of space only to say that I think I have a girl crush on Jess. I know how i think, am just unsure of the words of the day. Secondly, I have looked at and wondered about ebikes more seriously since the VanMoof saga. There are so many, so costly and the press sounds good but you dig deeper and discover quirks about a bike that I would otherwise refer to as serious issues. I used to ride my bike everywhere when i was a late teen older twenty years, but then kids and work and......old. Got a warning for speeding once, only, when speed limits on bikes did not exist. But there is something about riding a bike and the wind in your hair, keeping you cool when it is hot out, enjoying the thrill while building up steam for the big hill nee mountain you are quickly approaching, you know? Now kids are grown, most grandkids are grown but no greats yet and I am a pensioner past the age of the daily grind who wants to get back on a bike, but again, old..... So am interested in an ebike. And I found one! I loved the look of the Himiway from the moment you pulled it out of the box and I think I found my bike! Initially disappointed that they seemed to only ship to the EU but one of their articles referred to the pedelac being popular in the States. Huh? Look up to the top right of their webpage. See EU/US and click on US. Wonderful! I will, of course, research the bike but that becomes easier when you have a specific bike in mind. Just bought a bus for husband's wheelchair as well as husband and that thing is a beast! What is? All three, the bus, the wheelchair and the husband but I was referring to the wheelchair with elongated cast iron footrests that has taken out a door and my shins and requires a bus. So the bike purchase will have to wait a couple of months. I had better get on my research the bike and start swooning about it to the kids for a month or three so that the kids decide that this would make mom really happy. Better get to work! Can you track comments through a KZread page? Should this be deleted? Thanks Jay! Oh! Sorry to be late. GREAT VIDEO! THANKS

Jay, would love your take within the distant future on how France (specifically Paris) will be opening up to tourists again soon. Would you let us know if Paris is still very much keeping the mask mandate? Also, is it easy to find a covid testing place in Paris for English speaking tourists?

Hey Somie! You'll have to keep an eye on the official government releases to know the answers to most of your questions - I don't have any special insights. But testing is generally really easy here - especially if you walk in the day before to make an appointment (for PCR tests in particular - antigen tests are usually doable on the spot at many pharmacies). Hope you have a great trip when things open up!

They all come in a box (just like that one) to the bike shop or the department store. This one is much more assembled than the ones sent to bike shops.
