You should NEVER get over 10 years for a nonviolent offense. A drug offense, stealing, bad checks, etc is not something that needs a sentence longer than 10 years. I personally think that should be no more than 5 years personally, and intensive rehab. We need to stop locking up nonviolent people, ruining their record, instead of rehabilitation. This just makes people go right back in. There isn't a lot you can do once you have charges on your record. Seeing someone in there for 10 years for robbery, and the other woman 13 for stealing money, really? Ridiculous.

I don't think drug offenses should even be a thing unless they involved children in it or something like a meth lab explosion that hurt others. People on drugs need rehab and therapy not jail where they just learn to be more sneaky and get more drugs, and have to sell drugs when they get out because rarely anyone wants to hire an ex-con. Honestly if people want to do drugs it isn't even any of my business as long as they leave everyone else alone.

@Dana Gallegos so 10 dollars worth of chips is worth 10 years of someone's life? How about helping people instead of throwing them in jail to get worse. Edit. After going to jail once, you have a record and it becomes extremely hard to just 'get a job'. Believe me I know.

If the money that went into jailing addicts went into secure treatment facilities instead, you'd have a lot fewer people in prison and a healthier society. The problem is that some very powerful and influential people are making a great deal of money out of filling the prisons and keeping them full. Until keeping people incarcerated is no longer profitable for an elite few, the situation will never change. Money can completely destroy one's moral compass if the price is high enough.

She was 18yrs old when she went in & 36 yrs later I think she's learned her lesson. As she was talking about how she was before she went in and how she just wanted someone to love her made me tear up. It's very sad to see a atory like that when she could have been given a program or something at that young age & she wouldn't be 36 years into a prison sentence. I pray for her!

it's truly sad that almost every one of these prisoners came from abusive and violent families. so many children who are abused grow up to be criminals themselves- in fact, studies have shown that children from abusive families are 9 times more likely to be involved in criminal activities than others. these people need therapy and help, not prison time.

36 years is enough time done in the case of the old black woman. She should have been condemned for armed robbery only in the first place if you ask me, and not for an additional double murder and given life. She did not agree on killing the victims nor did she kill anyone or participate in it in any way. Her former boyfriend did that on his own.

In Maryland they have something called PBJ (Probation Before Judgment). It's used for things like speeding tickets where if you don't get another for a year your fine goes away and it's like the ticket never existed. They could use this concept in a lot of other areas of the system. For minor and nonviolent crimes they could give people probation and suspend the sentence. If they make it through the probation period (length could vary depending on the crime) the never have to step foot into a jail cell and the crime is hidden from your record (allowing people to get jobs, etc.). They could also add other stipulations like community service, counseling, etc. This, of course, would vary depending on what you were charged with. It keeps the prisons for the major, violent offenders and allows people a second chance at life.

Self defense from spouses or significant others who threatened their lifes and in self defense they grabbed that gun or knife close by and attacked their offender, OR their children offender. Sad but true.

Being able to talk to my kids and be in their lives. The stuff we take for granted....sleeping in your own bed, taking a hot bubble bath, being with the man u love, being able to cook and eat good food, sitting here, on my phone watching youtube and relaxing after a long day of work. Count your blessings. Things may not be going right in your life but at least you're not doing life in prison. These ppl can't make up for their bad choices outside of a prison.

I think this justice system is so flawed. We need institutions for 'criminals', for job training.(which brings me to the fact that people who are convicted of non violent drug crimes, possession, shoplifting, anything that could be forgiven) I think inmates should be seen by multiple psychiatrists, as well as specialists in human behavior, therapists for traumatic childhood/life circumstances. Nobody wakes up& decides to become a bank robber, addict, etc. Media should be less biased, esp in this episode.
