It's hard work supplying the world with a product no one needs, which also causes animal abuse and death.

@@saskdutchkid absolutely! Most people have no idea what farmers go through to make food for everyone and make ends meet financially. Your videos truly help connect the dots for people that may not have the opportunity to experience it first hand.

You use lots of water but your get so many uses from each gallon then is is put on the field to grow food. It is an incredible system anyone complaining just has not really looked into the usage. It is the cost of dairy and some beef. Thumbs up

Jan, one consideration about water use is the fact that you have nearly a closed loop water cycle. Granted you will have some evaporative loss from your lagoon, but the reapplication of your manure to your fields means the water has the same chance of returning to the aquifer as rain water does. Because you use well water, and you have a large land area to recharge the aquifer between each user, your water use is likely not measurable in terms of impact on an aquifer. The biggest consideration that comes into play in your setup is the energy used in performing these operations.

I often wonder if there could be some additional way to process lagoon water into fertilizer granules or pellets. Which could somehow then be spread at the same time seeding is done. That would save the time, labor and fuel ($) needed to do those different jobs separately at different times into something done together using less days of work and less cost outlay.

Probably is, but likely not cost effective on a small scale. I know a number of chicken growers produce a dry, pelleted product out of chicken litter. It’s a 3-2-3 usually, and spreads out of standard fert spreaders. The pellet process also heats the material so it is sterilized and dry. I would think the lagoon material could be done in a similar way, but not sure if it has sand in it. If I had to guess, running sawdust bedded dairy manure through a digester or solid separator first and then pellet mill might work. But at that point, probably not cost effective compared to spreading raw. I think the chicken plants use it as a product for outside sales.

In fact we still have every drop of water that God made this planet with , with the exception of what of what we have sent into outer space. That is an immeasurable amount compared to what we have here on Mother Earth. Right On!!

I think the main issue with water usage is the amount of water used to produce the crops for animal feed. That's why it's not efficient.

4:42 - back in the 80s we had a Nuhn pump (smaller one though). Nuhn is located on Hwy 8 just outside of Sebringville between Stratford and Mitchell about 45 minutes from where I use to farm.

March is the mud month. That loader crate thing for moving calves is a amazing idea. I'll never forget when your Dad said that; " Maybe now is a good time to negotiate your salary" when you were stuck in the bulk tank. :)

@saskDutch Kid Hi Jan, Those kind of door motors have a very clever (or very stupid) sensor that measures the current it is drawing. If the current threshold is set too low, the door will stop. The idea is that if anything is under the door or if it gets jammed, it will stop and hopefully not kill anybody or burn the motor out. If the door is properly greased and you can't find any mechanical fault with it, there should be a pot somewhere on the controller board or some way to adjust the threshold up more. On our gate motor, we have to let it reprogram it's self.

For a good fiew on the oil. You need to do a second check with te dip stick. Our old tractor is always low on the first few. But when I do the second check right away. Its perfect in the middel.

I'm not totally sure. But I've heard that the actual farmers have very little say. They sell the milk off to be pasteurized and I think it's the company that's processing and packaging that deals with government. I'm not totally sure on this. Just what I've heard.

In Canada, we have a supply management system. The provincial marketing board pays the dairy farmer based on the cost of (average) production The marketing board then gets best price for the milk from the processors. Canadian dairy farmers have to purchase the right to ship each kg of milk (including protein and fat). Because of the stable prices and milk supply, the government never has to pay out support when the price varies up and down as it does south of the border.

Dairy cows have been bred to be such good milk producers, and dairy farms have gotten so efficient, that in both the USA & Canada, dairy farms could produce more milk than the market can handle. So both countries have systems to deal with this, but different systems. In Canada, it's mostly managed on the supply side -- the government limits the size of dairy herds, to control the supply of milk. In the USA, the control is managed on the sales side. Theire are target prices for milk, and when an oversupply causes prices to drop, the government steps in and buys milk (but usually at a lower price than normal market price). This causes the market price to go up again. If this happens often, some farmers will decide to reduce the size of their herd on their own. The government-purchased milk often is turned into dried milk powder or cheese (you can't really store raw milk). Much of this is distributed to poor people in the US or as Foreign Aid to poor countries.

another thing not said about cows often is HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY. All of their baby calves are killed (unless female, then they suffer the same fate as their mothers --- milking machines).

We cleaning barn three times but we milk cows twice a day with automatic scrapers

Another great video keep up the great work.

Baby calf’s we load them and transfer them to a nother barn the older owns walk to get to pastures. Glad the cows like the brushes helps them out . We spray their backs with fly spray and hang fly propellant electronic spray on timers. The farmers here have a crew with semi trailer tank hauls liquid manure to fields and it dumps in a big tub which pushes it through the pipes to tractor with chisel plow puts it in the ground. Do you guys ever wash the calf’s off with warm water to keep them clean will in calf barn until transferred to another pin?

Been doing the new state-of-the-art open-air dairies in Idaho I spray polyurethane foam on the roof to keep the girls warm and happy so they produce more milk

Haha your old man really told you what was up cleaning out those calf rooms buddy. Hey on your overhead door, if you take the cover off by the motor there’s like some limit switches in there. you’re pretty mechanical I bet if you look at them you’ll see that they’re just out of adjustment and that would straighten out your overhead door trouble. it’s a pretty easy adjustment. You will see when the doors all the way down it hits one switch then when the door is all the way up it hits a different switch. If those come out of alignment the door will do all sorts of weird things like it’s doing now
