A Monk’s Tale: The Life of Zoga Shonin

Audio In-Focus Tour with Dr Mary Redfern
A Buddhist monk admired for his great learning and apparent eccentricity, Zōga (917-1003) turned away from political intrigues and pursuit of status to follow his faith. In this short video, curator Dr Mary Redfern follows the story of Zōga’s life as told by a pair of Japanese handscroll paintings in the collections of the Chester Beatty.
The scrolls were recently the focus of a three-year programme of conservation at Restorient Studio, Leiden, made possible with the generous support of the Sumitomo Foundation, Japan.
