just a little tip. When colour coding, also use the alphabet so that you don't forget which colour is the first, second etc. Example Blue, Green, orange, pink, purple are the alphabetical order for B, G, O, Pi, Pu., therefore plant blue first, then green, etc. I do this all the time and it really works. I do this when planting as well if I am, for example, planting three types of snapdragons, I use a stick divider but I don't write on it. The earliest name in the alphabet is on the left and the last name in the alphabet is on the right.

Yessss!!! Direct seeding is not for impatient people!! Also, if you’re impatient enough and are cheap and reuse seedling mix - you often get plants that you didn’t think germinated. Chaos gardening is so much fun!

Hi Janey! I love watching and learning from your show. I used to get bit up in my garden too (zone 9b Vacaville), but after someone gave me a citronella geranium to plant, I have not been bothered by mosquitoes like I used to. It's a very vigorous plant! I have to cut it back by half a couple of times during the growing season or else it grows over other plants near it. I can't say for sure if this plant is the reason for the decrease in the bug problem, but it might be worth a try. It smells really good too!!

I’m with you on direct sowing. I’ve had better luck protecting seedlings from bunnies than seeds from whatever ate them or weather. Also, I’ve never experienced problems regarding root disturbance. A couple years ago I grabbed a three pack of sunflowers on a whim, teased out 11 plants and they all grew. Lol maybe they should have been better in some way and I just didn’t know any better!

Janey - LOVE the signs on your office - both front and back! As for bugs ‘in the country’ - have you considered planting plants throughout your landscape (instead of just in raised beds) that deter flies/mosquitos or pests (like gophers, moles, squirrels, etc)? I have lived in the country forever, and I discovered by an ‘accidental planting’ around my deck a few years ago that these things can really make a huge difference!

I did research this spring when I grew my first seedlings. Most seeds need light to germinate, so you don't want to cover them very much if at all. Some seeds need darkness to germinate like garden phlox, but most need light. So if you bury them too deep they won't germinate.

Hi!bugs love me and I had to resort to longsleaves pants and covered shoes and socks😝 I hated the bug sprays smell, and they didn’t seem to work that well either. I recently tried the zevo on body spray and I really like it! It is odorless! And seems to work pretty well. If you try it, be careful not to breathe it in. I spray it on and run away to a “clean air spot” before I breathe. I just spray my arms and legs and when I’m done outside,I just wash my arms off in the sink and don’t feel like I have to get in the shower immediately.

Hi Janey! zone 9B FL here, I feel the same way. I don't like bugs spray on me too. So for me to avoid using chemical spray I planted a lot of Lemongrasses, Citronella & Lavender around my house and my garden. Just keep in mind though Lemongrass is a tropical plant so you might want to plant them in pots so that you can protect them in the winter and if you research them they have great health benefits too and it's beautiful in the garden as well.

I have hit and miss with direct sowing as well. I know that zinnias don’t like to be disturbed and so I tried soil blocking for the first time and I am completely addicted!!! It’s so easy to plant the seedlings out because you don’t disturb them trying to get them out of the tray plus it’s so much easier for me to regulate the water because you can see if they are dry or not instead of guessing. I love that everything stores so compact. I have spent a ton of money on expensive seed trays and I am giving them all away! You should try it! Regenerative Gardening with Blossom and Branch Farm has a great video for beginners.

It would get 140 degrees easily in the greenhouse. Might even warp the pots. I live in high desert conditions and the intense sun fries everything to a crisp. Much different that full sun in humid conditions. Even plants tags that say full sun may need afternoon shade in places where humidity is low.

I have struggled with growing zinnias from seeds as well! Normally they are sO EASY to grow. I have tried 3 different tines with the same results as you. I wonderful if its so ething in our garden zone or maybe bad seeds… who knows. 😆😆😆Liz from California

Someone who worked outside around bugs recommended my parents try Johnson’s baby creamy oil aloe and vitamin e. It’s a green tube. I use it as body lotion before I head out to my garden and it helps the mosquitos not smell me. Other times I grab a paper towel and wet it then add a couple drops of lemongrass essential oil and gentle rub on skin.

Love the saying and love your office sign. We each have to discover what works best for us but I LOVE DIRECT SOWING. I ALWAYS DIRECT SOW MY SUNFLOWERS AND MY ZINNIAS. YOU KNOW MUCH MORE THAN ME ABOUT GARDENING BUT ONE TIP I MAY HAVE FOR YOU ABOUT DIRECT SOWING ZINNIAS IS TO OVER SOW. YOU CAN ALWAYS THIN OUT. I ALWAYS HARVEST MY ZINNIA SEEDS SO I HAVE ALOT AND I SOW HEAVY. I PREFER DIRECT SOWING TO SEED STARTING BC I DONT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT FOR SEED STARTING OR THE ROOM. BUT WE EACH HAVE TO FIND WHAT WORKS BEST FOR US, RIGHT!
