A Minor Fight To Get a John Deere JS30 Mower Running

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This Mower came in and i thought it was worse that it was. Being it was a Briggs quantum it was an easier save than it could have been

    We had a John Deere mower back in the seventies and it was tough as nails. Heavy I do remember, ours did not have the drive like this one which would have been nice. We were tougher back then though, maybe. Awesome.

    As a Road Runner for work...I respect the cable ingenuity. Necessity is the mother of invention. The issue those temp repairs that are too good become permanent 🙃. Mower look like it was attacked by a dog! By nature mulching blades should have teeth. More aggressive the wing is at the end is for lift...for bagging. Honda mulching blades have no teeth just more oval and square at the end. Baffled why to this day. Great vid as always!

    In 2006 I bought a Snapper Easyline SP21 which is the exact same thing as this John Deere except the Deere is green and the Snapper is red. I have no idea why Deere marketed a rebadged Snapper but they did. It was marketed as a low end Snapper with a Simplicity transmission & not the bullet proof traditional Snapper transmission. When these were first marketed Simplicity had owned Snapper before B&S bought them out. I still have the thing but rarely use it. It can bag but you must install the bagging chute which is the Snapper tunnel design. The transmission is really twitchy and requires constant adjustment on the handle as you mow. The biggest issue I had and others who have mentioned it on mower blogs is the rear wheels break off after a couple of years of regular use. Since the rear wheels are secured with cheap cotter pins, the wheels are not aligned correctly and have too much play, so the wheel hubs break off. I replaced four rear wheels over the years for this cheap design failure. When new, the mower was half the price of a traditional Snapper. Clearly this was not a successful Snapper design and unfortunately for John Deere, them too.

    JD mowers. I had recently repaired a JS26 mower. Self-propelled, and nice. REDONE the carb.....still didn't go. Would run on carb cleaner, but not gas. If i left it sit overnight, would start once on gas, run for about 10 seconds, die. REPLACED original carb ( very very cheap chinese ones, i think ) with a Hippo brand, from off of Amazon. (25 $ Canadian) Installed it from factory, and wow. Started first pull. THOSE ORIGINAL JD carbs, are junk. They use a rubber insert, to seal the float needle, to housing. All the jets, eustachian tube holes, were open on the original. Anyway......starts first time now,.... Thanks, Bruces' Shop. !

    Bruce, I have a decent looking 6.75hp briggs with auto choke on it that I cleaned the carb started up decent then started running rough and quit? Oil looks brand new but won’t start up and run decent? Key isn’t sheared. Makes an air sound coming out of carb🤔

  • @BrucesShop

    @BrucesShop

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well the air sound coming out of the carb is most likely an intake valve that isn't closing all the way or opening at the wrong time. If you have an intake valve that isn't closing you can see the valves if you take off the small door behind the muffler. You can take a valve gap measurement at that time as well. You can also remove the head and if you can spin the valve with your fingers (in circles) it needs to be ground and lapped. I hate to bring up all the bad but there is a cam gear that has a plastic interface that can slip in the motor as well. Start with the simplest problem and work your way to the hardest. The valve door is the easiest thing to check. Valve movement and valve lash in there.

    Hey Bruce, As far as I am concerned, YOU ARE THE MAN!! I have a question, I am working on an old Craftsman 6.5 push mower. Alabama Bill

  • @BrucesShop

    @BrucesShop

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well sometimes the filter - primer housing warps over time. I would try a second primer gasket. I you have compressed air just shoot TINY amount of air into the little hole in the carb edge and if gas shoot up out of the emulsion tube you need a better or double gasket.

    You don't need to get fuel to the starter. A starter turns the engine. You need to get fuel to th carburator. Think about a squirt bottle. That is what a carburstor does to the fuel. OK This one has an automatic choke. Take the air filter off. There will see a 3/4 inch hole going into the engine (and carb) Squirt or drain some gas into that hole. About a tablespoon is a LOT. Tilt the mower back so it drains inside the hole. Then try to start the mower. It should frun for about 4 seconds. If it doesn't fire you may have a coil (spark) issue.
