A Minimalistic Compact Home in Bengaluru Inspired by Japanese Architect Tadao Ando (Home Tour).

Surrounded by the Turahalli forest, this house is envisaged as a large concrete tray that hovers around a white monolith. Meticulously designed as per sun angles and the climate of Bengaluru, the weathered house has been inspired by Japanese traditions.

Adapting to the local neighbourhood yet conceiving the Japandi theme in the interiors and exteriors are some of the key highlights of this project. Architect Lester Rozario of Kamat and Rozario Architects walks us through the house and explains how he planned it with respect to the surroundings and still managed to satisfy the needs of the client.

we are used to living in 400 sq ft houses. ideally speaking they are not houses at all. they can be called as shelters in some refugee camps. every house should be at least 2400 sq ft. architects say that we should have at least 10ft offset in each side for oxygen ventilation and light ventilation

Unfortunately thats how they think... Our architects think they are born to build houses with > 10000 sq ft area. Anything below that is below their standards. In reality, creativity and challenges comes when you build compact houses or ultra large projects. But most of the architects wants to be in the comfort zone of 5000 sq ft to 10000 sq ft. With that much space, you dont need an architect to design for you. Even an experienced mason can come up with good ideas.

Don't attach Tadao Ando's name next to your sh¡tshow of a house.

So cutting down that giant ass tree and giving the family a view of the road in front is gonna make their life better? The architect is not the best but atleast he got one thing right and that is to save that tree and make it a feature of the house. Indians are world famous for cutting down trees and making houses everywhere. Glad some architects are trying to save trees.

@@anupdev5845 you've never actually "lived in nature" and it shows. try getting out of your concrete jungle and actually getting some life experiences. my hostel had the "live with nature" philosophy and it was the worst place I've ever stayed at in my whole life, and I've stayed at a lot of bad places. there are a hundred problems with that tree but here are a few of the glaring issues: 1. ants everywhere. ants usually prefer to make nests in/near tree roots for whatever reason. red ants even make nests on the branches. so you can never have anything sweet or sugary in the house because the ants will make it impossible. I've seen them get into airtight containers more than a couple of times. unless you decide to keep everything sweet in a fridge or something, even then it's not impossible for ants to raid a fridge. 2. every rainy season is going to be living h3ll. its the insects mating season, and if i remember this video correctly, this is bangalore. 3. rats. my childhood home had a neem tree with it's branches reaching our roof, it was very nice becaue we could get access to neem leaves right from our roof, and those are very medicinal, but we eventually had to cut those branches because rats would use them to get into the house. this tree is practically IN their house, I can only imagine the pest control they will have to do. 4. pigeons, the damn pigeons. in my hostel, there were trees planted right outside and there was an open field nearby. the trees became pigeon nests, and in no time at all, the pigeons starting invading the hostel because the hallways had the classic hostel windows where they save money on window glass and its just open with a metal barricade with lots of gaps in between. so the pigeons got inside the hostel and started making nests in the ventilation ducts on the top most floors, every hallway you went in, there was pigeon s*x going on. their house is literally open for exploitation. 5. my god if they ever decide to have pets. if these people had more than 4.5 combined braincells they would have never made an open house with a tree literally inside it. if they were actually smart about it they could have made a little treehouse on that side of the tree and cut the branches reaching the house, so it looks like a tree if you look from the outside, but the on the inside half, there's a little treehouse for the kids to play in. or just pay someone to have the tree moved to a corner of the yard so it's not reaching the house. there are nature friendly ways to have a livable house and a tree, this is not one of them.

@@Nobody-pv9jt Bro you shouldn't assume things about people you don't know. I literally laughed out loud when you said I need to get out of my concrete jungle. I live in the hills of Uttarakhand. I live in a village with barely 500 people here within a 20 sq. km radius. My house is literally in the middle of a forest with trees everywhere as far as the eye can see. My plot itself has more than 20 apples trees, several peach trees and many other variety of trees seen only in the Himalayas. I have quite a bit of land but I chose to build a small 450 sqft house so as not to cut down any trees. Living amongst mother nature with minimal carbon footprint is what I strive for. The fact that I live in a forest means insects including deadly scorpions are always invading my home but that doesn't mean I will cut down trees. The pros of being surrounded by trees far outweigh the minimal cons that you have outlined. If city slickers think having one single tree bordering their house is a problem, then I don't know what to say. The problem is people in cities have grown so far apart from nature that their feet don't even touch the soil anymore. That's why these minimal problems seem like huge problems.

@@anupdev5845 sure bro, for someone like you, these may be minimal problems. I even respect you for being able to live like that and these are infact city folk problems, as you said. I assumed you were some dreaming kid in a tier one city based on your comment who missed all of the problems that could occur, I didn't think that you would be one of the people that know these issues and is fine with them, and for that I do apologize. but these people are most definitely city folk seeing how they just returned from Japan and own land in a tech hub like bangalore, so my points still stand.

The aforementioned 2500 sq ft includes the spaces on the first and second floors of the house. If the clients wanted, they could have built a G+2 close to 4500 sq ft by squeezing out every single piece of space available. If the land parcel is around 2300 sq ft, they could've built a ground level living space of around 1800 sq ft leaving a clearance of 3 ft between the main structure and the boundary walls (which i believe is mandated by the local authorities) on all sides, take out the balcony space on the 2 upper floors and you could have at least 1400 sq ft of livable space each on each floor. Hence the term "compact" I guess.

2400sft plot is not compact !. It is a comfortable size for a spacious 4bhk home with courtyard, family room and terrace garden space.
