Dr. Frank Wilczek is the newly announced recipient of the 2022 Templeton Prize, which, valued at over $1.4 million, is one of the world's largest annual individual awards.
Dr. Wilczek is celebrated for his investigations into the fundamental laws of nature that have transformed our understanding of the forces that govern our universe. In this video, Dr. Wilczek explores the question, ‘does the world embody beautiful ideas?’ through science and humankind’s relationship to (and love for) symmetry.
"We can look at the record of what people have found beautiful, what they were hoping for in their understanding of the world with what the remarkable understanding of the world we've achieved in recent years looks like. And we can therefore frame a meaningful discussion and a meaningful question, a meaningful meditation, on the issue.”
The Templeton Prize was established by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton. It is given to honor those who harness the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind’s place and purpose within it.

Nature is filled with beautifully crafted items ranging from simple to complex. While symmetry has a certain beauty, it is also mixed with asymmetry and that adds depth to the infinite array of beautiful creations that surround us. All we have to do is take a bit of time and observe.

Beauty is the recognition of patterns and symmetries in the chaos of life. However the chaos is not adverse to beauty, it is the necessary background from which we can perceive patterns to begin with. Without the chaos there wouldn't be any patterns and without the patterns there wouldn't be any chaos. Both create each other. What we consider beautiful is therefore a result of our capacity to recognize the patterns within the chaos of our own perception. This is why we perceive beauty as both subjective and yet somehow universal. Because those who have the clarity of mind to see the patterns in every chaos and the chaos in every pattern, those see the beauty in everything. Because everything that appears to be ugly contains and frames beauty and is therefore beautiful in its own right. When we have recognize it's place in the world, and symmetrically our place in the world, we no longer fear what we consider ugly, which simply is something that we do not yet understand. True objectivity is capable of seeing the ugly and at the same time seeing only beauty. There is no need to resolve the paradox as there is none, for the chaos creates order just as order creates the chaos and both are one and the same.

That's nice to say, but is it true? Is it a testable statement? And what would you say to a bee swimming in the cup of a flower? Does the flower look beautiful to the bee? Does the peacock look beautiful to the peahen? And would a conscious and intelligent space creature have a concept of beauty? And would it be the same as ours? Would a spacefaring visitor to our planet find the flower and the peacock beautiful?

I love the framing around symmetry and the idea of a circle retaining its basic nature even while all of the points on the circle are changing. This connected to me within a non-dualistic philosophical context. The idea of a unified, unchanging, a-temporal, non-spatial truth from which the physical universe of matter and energy manifests is the center piece of so many philosophical and spiritual traditions. Compellingly, this truth is demonstrable and attainable to anyone who seeks it and practices; after which the "nature" of the universe that physics and science are describing becomes quite clear. The physical universe of stuff is like the points on the circle always in motion and change. While the "underlying quantum field" remains unchanged like the nature of the circle itself. (Rather than saying quantum field, I think the Tao or God is probably a better descriptor.) Thank you so much for sharing this video of Mr. Wilczek. It is inspiring to see and hear people like this talking about subjects like this.

I am always in awe as to how articulate and thought-through are Frank Wilczek’s answers! Amazing. - One thing that really caught me in both of Einstein’s theories of Relativity was the importance he gave to the notion of invariance, and how he expressed it through the language of tensors: they allow a description that does not depend on a “point of view” (coordinate system). Galileo had already had the idea, but Einstein and others elevated it to a fundamental goal, to which Emmy Noether gave the final crown. I find this idea of invariance or symmetry so powerful, with such far-reaching implications, that my mind reels. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could also apply it to psychology and education? The average human is still a very primitive creature when incapable of seeing that what s/he’s seeing is highly affected and constrained by his or her “point of view”. Around a sphere there are an infinite number of points of view, even if all are seeing the same sphere. I don’t know how quantum mechanics enters the picture here, in terms of invariance and symmetry, but Frank tells us it works on the same principle. However, it doesn’t seem we can then understand QM symmetries as “points of view”, but I may be totally wrong here. Maybe not visual p.o.v. but mathematical ones? I suppose E8 is one such?

One of my near relatives who passed away in 2008 [Mary Golda ross] was the first Native American Aerospace engineer. Not to toot our own horn, but I've realized the potential we have as a incredibly intelligent species of humans, with my family on my dads' side going to show that these people formed the nation. What to deduct from this is that to use symmetry, you need to understand symmetry yourself, not in a physical manor but rather a more mental or cognitive way. I'd be excited to learn more about my distant family or relatives more, and feel like it's in my best interest to continue the legacy of mathematics and cosmology better for our world

I'm going to respect my point of view, wanting to understand my point of view, wanting to understand me, my uniqueness, taking the time to deeply get to know me. I'm not going to force your agenda or point of view on me. I'm going to listen to me and care about my interests and share similar interests with me. I'm going to develop togetherness with me and collaborate with me. I'm going to be there for me when i'm down and hopeless. I'm going to be there for me when I'm lonely. I'm going to validate my feelings, sharing my emotions with me, empathizing with me. My pain is going to be my pain. I'm going to meet me where I'm at, at my developmental level. I'm going to forgive me for my mistakes. I'm going to be patient with me. I'm going to see the good in me even when I don't see the good in myself. I'm going to be generous and kind. I'm going to give myself verbal approval and praise. I'm going to compliment me on my uniqueness. I'm going to keep my promises to me. I'm going to keep my peace with me, avoid conflict with me. I'm going to tell the truth to me. I'm going to be able to fully trust me and I'm never going to cash in on that trust. I'm going to see my realness, warts and shadow and all as I truly are. I'm going to deeply appreciate the finite portion of consciousness that me are and I'm going to accept my selfishness whenever me have the urge to be selfish. "Does the world embody beautiful ideas?" Why don't we consider the reintegration of nomadic rituals? We've been experimenting with sedentary lifeways since the agricultural revolution. I'm not suggesting it's unnatural to settle and establish a system of operations, I just think we need to address the lag between our design and our understanding. Immediately after high school, in two attempts, I completed the Appalachian Trail (now 2,192 miles.) Three years later and I am still obsessed with anything and everything related to long-distance hiking (and similar experiences.) After having a hike canceled by covid in 2020, I'll be attempting a southbound thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail this summer ^.^ Benton MacKaye's proposition for the trail was published in 1921. This is a paragraph from the journal: "We civilized ones also, whether urban or rural, are potentially helpless as canaries in a cage. The ability to cope with nature directly-unshielded by the weakening wall of civilization-is one of the admitted needs of modern times. It is the goal of the “scouting” movement. *Not that we want to return to the plights of our Paleolithic ancestors. We want the strength of progress without its puniness.* We want its conveniences without its fopperies. The ability to sleep and cook in the open is a good step forward. But “scouting” should not stop there. This is but a faint step from our canary bird existence. It should strike far deeper than this. We should seek the ability not only to cook food but to raise food with less aid-and less hindrance-from the complexities of commerce. And this is becoming daily of increasing practical importance. Scouting, then, has its vital connection with the problem of living." From what I understand, he suggested we establish communities along the trail, or a trail network perhaps. That's already a lot to take in, so I'll just emphasize that we should think outside the 🏠

There is one process that could form this geometry forming three-dimensional space with one variable in the form of time. And that is a process of spherical symmetry forming and breaking. At high temperatures this process would be relative to plasma with charge being able to cover a whole star or even a large area of interstellar space. At lower temperatures, we have a phase change in matter and the process is relative to the atoms of the periodic table. Forming the potential for cell life and the Fibonacci Spiral with nothing ever being totally perfect because it arises out of broken spherical symmetry Snowflake diversity is a good example of this process in action!

Second, why do we need answers at all? Answers are for the mind. The answer, if there can ever be one is to watch, better yet "see" in awe.

Remember old man, that your perspective is no better than anyone else’s. Psychedelics are natural and grow purely in nature. They have been used by my ancestors for millennia to assist in accessing other levels of consciousness. I have been in deep meditation without plant medicine also and they produce similar effects. Time is a compact dimension one Planck second in size. Through Kuramoto synchrony this creates a hyperplane of the present. We are all on this surface called NOW and always are. But things like photons can move along the surface at a rate of one Planck length each Planck second. The other side of this plane is the anti matter universe which is a perfect inversion of ours in charge and spin. When you make a mountain gold one one side you create a valley fold on the other. An inflow here is an outflow from there. Clockwise here is counterclockwise there. This is also because we exist on minimal single sided closed surface (Klein) “Shirley’s Surface” Surface (cos(u/2)cos(v/2),cos(u/2)sin(v/2),sin(u)) 0>u>4pi 0>v>2pi Notice that 2 full rotations are needed to complete surface. Electron half spin. Neutron decay cosmology is the physical process solution to black hole paradox and fine tuning.

@@youtubecanthandlethetruth3949 Yes, but to be fair, the "western approach" has brought many amazing things. Both have problems. The issue is not which *extreme* is better but about balance and nothing is ever forgotten(everything is encoded in to the universe's future, even you farting will effect the outcome. This is because the universe is chaotic(and I mean the precise mathematical notion)). The universe is about balance and as something becomes to extreme there will be a swing in the other direction and that thing will become extreme and so the pendulum will repeat. For us, the "western approach" has swung too far and at some point, if it isn't already, it will start to swing the other way transforming in to a more balanced(when v is largest which means it won't last long) approach and then move off in to something that won't last very long. Until humans understand the principle of balance it will continue in the washing machine until it either learns or is destroyed,
