A Military History of the Falklands War Part 2: From San Carlos to Stanley

After barely surviving the brutal Battle of San Carlos, the most costly naval battle waged by the Royal Navy since the Second World War, and successfully landing on East Falkland Island, 3 Commando Brigade was faced the daunting prospect of recapturing Stanley and driving the Argentine military from the Falklands. Opposing them were some 13,000 men under General Menendez, 10 battalion equivalents which were holding excellent defensive ground. Even with the arrival of 5 Infantry Brigade and its 3 additional battalions, bringing the total to 8, recapturing Stanley and its surrounding high ground was shaping up to be the most challenging operation conducted by the British Land Forces in decades.
But before the final battle could even be contemplated, General Moore had to break out of the beachhead, win the special forces battle, maneuver his forces across exceptionally difficult country, invest the primary defensive line and then assault the Argentine mountain fortresses, all in the middle of a sub-Antarctic winter. Although General Menendez' men are often decried as lowly conscripts, the plain reality was the heavily armed Argentine ground forces were ready and willing to fight and die for their Malvinas. Despite all of these challenges, through superior morale, command and, most importantly, tactical skill, the British battalions were able to drive the Argentines from this truly formidable defensive terrain, and liberate Stanley. But in doing so they would have to pay their share of blood and sacrifice.
This video, the second and final installment of the Military History of the Falklands War, covers the land campaign, including the Battle of Goose Green, the battle between the Argentine and British special forces for domination of the high ground and the reconnaissance edge, 3 Commando Brigade's yomp across East Falkland, the loss of Sir Galahad at Bluff Cove, 3 Commando brigade's offensive at Mount Longdon, Two Sisters and Mount Harriet and, finally, the ultimate battles at Tumbledown and Wireless Ridge.

I have seen almost every video out there on the Falklands War. This Part 2 has presented the most detailed discussion of the land warfare "I have ever seen" and included deserved credit to the Argentina troops who fought well under the circumstance. I also don't recall Exocet shore batteries being mentioned in other documentaries to name one of many new facts learned. Outstanding work! - It is my belief that the Falklands are and should remain British and its people deserve to be left free to live their lives in peace. Let's pray that another foolish war of conquest doesn't happens again, as the troops are the ones who suffer and die the blunders of unwise politician.

As a participant in the Falklands war, I do agree with many of the comments that this is a good depiction of the war as i remember it and better than most unqualified documentaries that reply more on sensation than fact, so well done. My war was aboard the cruise ship [troop ship] Canberra, and I was a medic and POW guard. We also took them home to Argentina after they surrendered and i came back from the war with the most unusual war souvenir , a signed thank you card from the enemy! [Its all in my book called 'The Band That Went To War'.

Yes, sure... the "brave" Argentine recruits fighting against sheep and soldiers in jeeps, what a way to laugh, every time someone insinuates that the Argentines were brave I personally take it upon myself to inform them that the Argentine landing on April 2 was by surprise and without prior declaration of war... every time someone insinuates a supposed Argentine "bravery" I refer them to seeing the audiovisual record of the Argentine Chinook flying at low altitude over the houses to cause fear in the civilian population before and during the taking of the governor's house, the example of the photos of the Argentine LVTP-7 amphibious armored vehicles trying to block the way of people with shopping bags is also valid... I will only say one thing, if I had a aircraft carriers, with their respective Chinooks helicopters and LVTP-7 amphibious armored vehicles, so even I without having military experience would be "brave", but that supposed bravery would disappear the instant the owners of the invaded lands with weapons similar to mine came to present me battle... 😂😂

I served after the Falklands but would say this. H and McKay is a famous bloodline. 2 PARA were blooded in Ulster and the passage south so they were adrenaline-oomphed (medical term) towards Argentinian slaughter. Appraised from afar H had probably become mad but the objective reality on the ground is more vital, so judgements should not be made from afar with 20/20. In the end, Para made vital differences.

@@ghostdog688i 100% agree. History must be preserved, and it deserves to be remembered. In fact, we must remember history so we can learn. Not just about mistakes made, but about human nature itself and the individual stories that so often get forgotten in the grand picture

I spent some time in the Falklands in the late Nineties and learned of the "action" taken by the locals to scare the Argentinian troops. They explained by drawing there hand across their throat that the Ghurkhas would cut their heads off. The Argentinan troops deserted the positions facing the Ghurkhas.

The claim Argie officers were permitted to keep their sidearms for protection against their own men is another stubborn British myth as Brigadier-General Mario Benjamin Menendez explained to British authors Michael Bilton and Peter Kosminsky in their book Speaking Out (Andre Deutsch, 1989), it was part of the deal, conditional surrender-terms ironed-out by the Argie commanders that let them not renounce their claim to their beloved Malvinas, keep their battle flags, etcetera.

General Menendez in that book also confirmed 601 and 602 Army Commando Companies contested British platoon-sized fighting patrols around the Murrell River area, forcing many British Paras and Commandos to retreat and capturing much enemy equipment and weapons in the process.

Those Vulcans blow me away, I've heard they were used in War games. A simulated attack against NY city in the USA. They got through TWICE despite the USAF knowing an "attack" was coming, subterfuge & radio jamming, radar kerfuffles. Two nil pretty good.

In 1982 the Falkland's had only 5 miles of paved road all around Port Stanley, so additional vehicles were of little us unless 4x4.The first action of the Argentines was to change the side of the road you drove on.

Outstanding work! Incredible level of detail you gave on each phase of the battle, I had no idea there were so m any separate battles to the conflict. I joined the RAAF in Jan'82, this kicked off shortly after. I remember the sinking of the Belgrano, the loss of the Atlantic Conveyor and the fires that routed the RN aluminium ships bombed in harbour. Although it was a relatively small war, some pretty amazing feats were achieved, and appears there was a lot of luck on the British side at times. The loss of the Chinooks on the Conveyor was a massive logistic loss for the foot soldiers. The logistics to carry out the Black Buck raids to put one bomb on the Stanley runway were nothing short of unbelievable. I didn't know they had a Vulcan rip off the refuelling nozzle and have to divert to Brazil. Thanks again for your wonderful research and storytelling, keep the great work coming mate!
