A Malay Kampong in Katanning, Western Australia

Who can resist a traditional wedding feast? Not us.
Journey inland beyond the popular coastline of Western Australia and you might find Katanning - a small town three-hours' drive from Perth and home to a significant Malay population. The 400-people strong community still continues Malay traditions, including some unique to Christmas and Cocos island where most came from.
If you’re lucky, you might even chance upon a truly sedap feast prepared by makciks in the town!

Malays in Malaysia are trying to have weddings as white as we could get. In air-conditioned halls, hotels with floral, garden themes and grand dias etc. Meanwhile Malays in Malaysia are having weddings that look like how Malaysian Malays have the weddings in the 80s-90s....how awesome

The sad thing , Lee , is that that priceless practise called " gotong royong " is all but gone back home . Got an advice for you . Should you come back for a visit , head for the countryside , not the snobbish city ( you know which one ) , especially on weekends , where weddings take place . I can bet my life you will be invited on the spot . Check in a homestay where you ll be informed of the kampong's activities .

The irony is that, Malays -or any ethnics, generally speaking- are more UNITED when they are away from home. I was once a student in Strasbourg, France. Since non-French Asian communities were very small, we took advantage of any holidays to organise masak-masak together. These gatherings back then were not just limited to the Malaysian Malays, but also Indonesians, Singaporeans, Bruneians etc. Jadi, memang benar, gotong royong itu menjadi amalan masyarakat Melayu yang menetap di luar negara kerana majlis keramaianlah peluang untuk mereka merapatkan hubungan dan berbual di dalam bahasa ibunda. -23 FEB 2020

it seems we always found our identity n appreciate each other as Malaysians regardless of our skin colour, race n religion when we are in a foreign country....many years ago When I am working in a remote area of Guangzhou ... Chinese over there don't see me as a chinese when I said I'm a Malaysian HWA Ren. They address me as MalaiChai ( Malay Boy). One day I met a young Malay couple ...i talk to them in Bahasa Melayu . We both are very surprised to find our same countrymen deep n far in a foreign land...the couples were there on a resourcing trip. I brought them everywhere to halal restaurants to places of leisure. We found out that we have different political ideology but that does not matters at all! We become great friends n kept still in contact today.

Great content! Never know about malay community there. Looks eerily similar with what we have in Malaysia. It would be great if you could do second part of it maybe their preparation for Ramadhan (fasting month) and their Eid Fitri. Love this! Cheers from Malaysian’s malay!
