A Magical Day in Tokyo ✨ Studio Ghibli Museum, Cat Temple, & Akihabara

A rainy day in Tokyo is perfect for exploring and in this video we explore some truly magical spots.
We began our day taking a quiet stroll through Kanda to see the peaceful Kanda Shrine. This isn't one of the 'main' shrines of Tokyo, so it was super quiet. We were really impressed by it.
Then we moved onto the lively streets of Akihabara. Akihabara as an otaku culture haven. There is anime everywhere and lots of fun stuff to get into. We went into our first Don Qujiote and tried our first taiyaki that was shaped like a magikarp!
Then, we went to a specialty coffee shop called Glitch Coffee and got a tasting selection. This coffee is known to be extremely high quality and high-priced, and it was reflected in most of their drinks! Pricing is based on the beans you select. Some are more expensive than others.
After working up quite the appetite, we tried a famous food truck located near Harajuku in a residential area called Slice of Life. This place is very unique as it does a Japanese take on traditional Texan barbeque but with wagyu beef. This was very tasty and something we never expected to find in Japan.
To wrap up our meal, we travel a little bit by train to Setagaya area to go to Shiro-Hige Cream Puff factory to try their cute Totoro cream puffs. They're almost too cute to eat, but they're just as tasty as they are cute. There is also an option to eat at their restaurant, but that has a longer wait.
Not far from there is Gotokuji Temple, a temple that has gained notoriety for being the "cat temple". You will find rows and rows of cats here. It is supposed to be the birthplace of the Maneki-neko or "beckoning cat". These little kitties are said to be good luck charms and bring good fortune.
Our last big stop of the day was the Studio Ghibli Museum! Tickets can be difficult to get for the museum and need to be booked a month in advance. We feel very fortunate we were able to get tickets. No photography or videography is allowed inside the building, but it features a lot of artwork, immerses you in the animation process, and you can even see an animated short with entrance. It was truly a little dose of magic to wrap up our second big day in Tokyo.

Cool shrines! Very peaceful moments. Never saw Pom Pomo. Need to watch a few more gibli movies. I like that they over embrace the pop culture. I feel like we could do that a little more in the us. Love tiaki. So good. Not the biggest fan of the bean paste but custard is probably delicious. Glitch is on our list. We love travel coffee culture haha every place so unique. Bbq in Japan 😮 I would have to buy two to get a good portion. Haha Totoro. The gibli museum is an interesting design. Pretty cool though. Nice towel. I feel you on the hustle. Haha it’s my superpower but usually exhausted at the end of the day. 🎉

Pom Poko is one of our personal favorites! We’re not super big on red bean either, but we love a lot of places have custard options. 😋 You’ll love Glitch if you’re a coffee fan! Very surprising to find bbq in Japan. I have a feeling more bbq spots will open as it gains notoriety. Wouldn’t have it any other way! Being exhausted at the end of the day is a great sign of a day well explored. 👍

Love seeing Tanukis all over our trip last year. I first saw them in Mario 3. Then Pom Poko as well. Taiyaki in Japan is on a whole new level. Love them fresh. 🥹 We tried to get Slice of Life during our trip and he had been open previous weeks before we got there. Then when he dropped his schedule we were so sad that he was having a private event. This next trip we're going to try again on a Sunday. *crosses fingers* so jealous! I'm originally from Texas so I've had my plethora of BBQ and wanted to try Wagyu Brisket from him. And Matt's reaction is prob going to be mine as well. I wonder if he can't get the mesquite that's essential to smoking it. But glad to hear it's still good. We were so disappointed with the Shirohige puffs but glad we had tried them out. At the cat temple it was raining for us too and it was so magical. We wanted to buy some nekos for our 14 year old calico that passed the year before but they had sold out. We both had tried to grab some Ghibli Tickets and the website kept kicking us out. But we managed to get Ghibli Park out in Nagoya. I heard the main museum could be underwhelming. But I still would like to check it out one day since I grew up with the films back in the 80's. Sorry for writing novels 😅

Not sure if you’ve looked into it, but he has a BBQ restaurant as well. Hope you can get it during your next trip. We liked the burnt ends the most. Just try to get there early! I know what you mean about the cream puffs. Choux pastry really isn’t our thing, but we liked the filling! Aww so sorry to hear about your calico baby. ❤️‍🩹 We have fur babies too, so our hearts go out to you. Maybe this next trip you can get some? Aren’t those reservations systems something else? We feel so grateful we were able to get tickets for both. We liked the museum for the price. We still recommend it! And no apologies needed. We really enjoy hearing about your adventures!
