Jim, one valuable tip for any inflatable: Annually at least, open the flaps and inflate the vest by mouth. Let it stay inflated for a few hours to check for any leaks. Then release the air and re-stow.

I forgot to add in the video that all inflatable life vests only count as one of the required vests on the boat if it's being worn. If its in a compartment it does not count as one of the required vests. Also I believe they are for users 16 and up.

Jim, really appreciate all your videos. With the AM 33 if you were in the water and someone attempted to pull you into the boat by the shoulder straps do you think it would work or would it possibly pull your vest off?

I think it depends on a couple of things. I think it would work if they were conscious so their arms would have some rigidity or if unconscious the waist strap would have to be tight enough.

Just Jim Time that makes sense, thanks for the quick reply. I see onyx makes some universal leg straps I could add on but don’t know how comfortable or wearable those would be. Son has occasional seizures but loves to fish. Thanks again for your videos. Looking at snagging a classic XL!

Has it been in the water? If it has and if its going to be stored in a location that freezes it's a good idea to change the lower unit gear oil in case any water got in there. It could freeze and crack it. At the same time it's a good Idea to change the engine oil. Put the batteries on a trickle charger or I just leave mine on the boat with my onboard charger plugged in since it has a maintenance mode. there are different maintenance things different people do at different times like grease the hubs and grease the fittings on the motor as well as back flushing the motor with fresh water. The biggest thing though is gear case oil, motor oil and batteries.

It seems like some of the Onyx and bass pro vest s are the same. I don't know if they're made by the same company or not. I tried looking it up but I didn't find anything. Sounds like a good purchase

@@justjimtime1672 Just to confirm Bass Pro Inflatables and Onyx Inflatables are indeed made by the same company (Absolute Outdoor). I work for the company. This video was really well-done. There is a lot misinformation out there, but you got the details spot-on.

@@lennelson7012 Thanks Len. Curious if Absolute Outdoor will ever make a pressure activated version similar to Mustang, but maybe cheaper, and lighter!

So how much water does it take to activate the vest just purchased 1

  • @lennelson7012

Timothy Mcvay submersion is required to activate the vests, ie. enough water to dissolve the white portion of the replaceable bobbin. Also, that particular onyx in-sight vest does not need to be worn to meet carriage requirements and be counted as a life jacket in the vessel’s inventory, just an FYI.

Are you able to bypass the auto feature, to make this manual only? Would like to use it for flyfishing and do not want it to go off if I slip in the water.

Its been a while since I researched it but I had the same idea. I believe it's possible, but you have to buy a part to convert it. Im having trouble finding anything about the part with a quick 5 minute search.

How many times can the vest be used with the single refill cartridge? Does each cartridge only work once?

  • @justjimtime1672

    Only one time per cartridge.

These life vests are type III. which means they are designed for close to shore activities and most importantly they are designed for the conscious user, where the user can turn themselves on their backs and keeps their head out of the water. where they might work for an unconscious victim they also may not as this is not what type III vest are designed for. If you are concerned about bering unconscious you shoud wear a type I vest.
