Yeah, most expansions have usually been "a fun take on a serious topic". Like Naxx is a horrifying place in WoW, yet KT is such an over-the-top narrator that it's hard not to smile. To avoid sounding like a "back in my day" boomer, here's a more recent example: Nathria is a murder(!) mystery set in the afterlife, yet it still feels fun in a "Saturday morning cartoon" kind of way, without losing much of its "edge". Even stuff like GvG or Karazhan had the benefit of being about blowing up the everliving sh%t out of eachother (former) and having a narrative, however simple (latter) respectively. The last two expansion meanwhile are just... "fun/silly", with little action. Badlands had a nice balance of silly and serious _(though IMO it's where a different problematic trend - reusing old characters whether it made sense or not - started getting irritating)._ Whizbang and Paradise, not really. There's also the fact that ever since they stopped making adventures, we lost a good storytelling device. *tl;dr Heathstone has always been silly, but recently it's gotten worse in that regard, mostly due to being less "adventurous"*

a tropical resort expansion after a toyshop expansion, after a parodic wild west expansion, after a music festival expansion: the funny zones were always a part of WoW, but never the main course. It looks like the game is now in the hands of people that don't really like the source material and try to use the fringiest elements to avoid building upon the Warcraft universe itself. It erodes the coherency from the original warcraft heritage, it dilutes any thematic consistency and even its identity. Nobody can now open a pack of Hearthstone and understand its general setting. And that's even before we talk about the DEI characters design grid.

What about Dragons, corpse synergies and quickdraw is "cute and funny" in Badlands? Have you seen the cards? It has all the dark notes of a classic Hearthstone expansion and some cute cards like Hearthstone has always had since day 1. It was never WoW, it was a card game with satyrical elements. Remember Harison Jones or Indiana Ford or whatever his name was? That was a classic card. Hearthstone has always been like this. Why are people crying about it now?

@@ioannispaxinos5171 Dragons wearing cowboy hats... Quickdraw literally being "Spaghetti Western" reference (With "Cowboys" being completely unrelated to literally anything in Warcraft lore)... Corpse synergies are only there because it's a core mechanic of Death Knight. Harrison Jones was a character in WoW, given its size there have been a lot of pop culture references in WoW, it's was never a primary theme just something that occasionally popped up. Why are people crying about it now? Because it's far more prominent now. Multiple expansions have been complete jokes, many joke cards are made and everything has to be silly. Whereas back in the day it was much like WoW, where yes, there were silly characters like Harrison Jones, ETC, Nat Pagle and some references to the silliness of their technology (Tinkmaster Overspark, Gelbin Mekkatorque and Mind Control Tech highlighting Gnomish technologies unreliability and Mad Bomber highlighting Goblin technology being mostly having **Something** explode). But it was mostly not silly and just had a few fun things added in.

World of Warcraft was never interesting to me for the same reason - it was even worse. A lot worse. And set a bad precedent for other fantasy games. And then I grew up. BUT what I think is a problem Is the art direction of the game basically every single artwork I see uses a Cartoonish style even for cards that don't really need It; I just miss the more realistic and epic style of the old cards. My main issue Is that even when they make serious and warcraft theme expansions THEY STILL USE CARTOONISH ARTDIRECTION .

Hearthstone has always been at least partially a parody/caricature of warcraft lore and characters. While some of the more recent sets have been more overt in this theming than others, we’ve had joke-y themes and cards since the original classic set - annoy-o-tron, angry chicken, even Leeroy Jenkins. While card games like Magic, which is facing a similar criticism, took themselves almost entirely seriously, hearthstone has had humor baked in from the start.

You could even argue, even before that with Curse of Naxxramas and Goblins and Gnomes, looking at the intros and at their promotional artwork. And then with League of Explorer, where we technically just replay a movie, it went completely off. (Also, most of the old artwork was just recycled stuff from Blizzard's then discontinued World of Warcraft TCG. Hearthstone is however not that. Lore wise, it is a game, played within Azeroth. It is not a game having Azeroth as a setting.)

I think what's being missed in the serious vs silly debate is that class names mean next to nothing anymore. They are a flexible set of mechanics and nothing else. It's very rare for the arts and names of the cards to really feel like they are obviously in that class just from the name and art. If I show you just the name and art for something old like Fire Elemental without the card border most people would be able to guess from that alone what class it's in. If I show you just the name and art of Rocket Hopper or Inzah or Trusty Companion with no border there isn't a reasonable guess for these cards because they can go anywhere because there's 0 connection to the class they're in. It's not just the individual sets either Baking Soda Volcano is obviously a shaman card from art and name alone while still fitting the theming of its set. Minecart Cruiser easy to tell too and still in theme. Remixed Totemcarver makes sense in the theme but also can only be one class. It can be done to make silly themes with cards the fulfill the class fantasy and they do it a bit but most of what they do lately is just jokes and memes with an arbitrary border slapped on to match the mechanics. The only set that's not doing that in standard at the moment is Titans and to say it's because it's a serious set is to miss the point. The cards better match the fantasy of the classes because they're not focused on making so many memes and jokes to fit a nonsensical theme. They occasionally get there with the jokey sets but more often seem to get lost in just making jokes to fit the theme.

Hakkar the Houndmaster is an eerie choice for the bundle skin. I have to disagree with you on Badlands. Just being western doesn't make it more serious by default. The set is quite goofy and the silliness is pushed more than it needed to be. I've been saying it a lot on this topic but the big issue comes down not just to the theming of the set being silly in general but the clear pushed childish aspects and not having art that presents itself in a direct or expected manner. I keep using Decent of Dragons as a go to example, because the sets premise is villains stealing a city. But Galakron and the other legendary dragons look intimidating and powerful in their art because that's what they are. It didn't stop the set from having its light hearted nature but it was applied where it fit. Now we have dragons eating cheese, and people sunbathing on a beach. The DK Tourist is an Abomination, which is a horrifying monstrosity of multiple corpses stitched together, and hes in swim trunks and a T-shirt goofing off at the beach. It's tonally jarring and absolutely child-focused. But that's what has been going on for a while now. Aside from Titans, sets these days push that goofier tone rather than art that represents a realistic or direct tone to a card. Even Nathria, a set involving murder in the literal underworld, is still somehow mostly goofy. There is a way to do both, and Titans proves they can still do it, but instead they go forward with a beach vacation set as if anybody thought that's what hearthstone needed.

Just my personal opinion on things: I'm totally fine when things are silly and I think it can be good for a card game to have whimsy and silliness as a refresher. With that being said, I personally enjoy darker concepts being explored in card games especially with games similar to MTG where creatures/minions dying is a core aspect of the game. I would like to go back to seeing the game be darker with elements of humor splashed in and I think that when the game is more focused around WoW, that tends to be easier. From my recollection, there's only a couple devs on the Hearthstone team who have history playing WoW, so I think it might be a little more difficult to get to that point again since the WoW storyline is so large.

You know, I understand how most of the recent expansions haven't felt very "warcraft" like in the slightest, but i feel titans is where it turned less serious and more goofy. Shocking I know, but instead of having a more grounded way to make the expansion "FEEL" like it should, it just felt like they were trying to be ominous, but instead just couldn't be serious with their crap trailer. Personally, I prefer many of the older expansions for the trailers for how they felt more desirable to want to play and see what they're like, be able to have a memorable reason to go back and watch. But MOTLK, Titans, Whizbangs Workshop, Nathria, all didn't make me hyped up for the expansion, it instead made me not care about them as much. FOL is where I got more interested because despite the cards being broken at the moment, still made me wonder what it was going to feel like. I prefer trailers with a catchy tune and lyrics that make me want to repeat it. Many of the expansion trailers is why i like hearthstone, and when they started to add the signitures after MOTLK, it was feeling less Warcraft, and more of an art showcase of how cartoony can we make our characters look to make people spend money?

Since this is a celebration of 10 year hearthstone, I would imagine that this year will havr a lot of fan-service with regards to returning hearthstone characters. Personally, I think that artworks also have gotten worse and themes are not the main issue. They feel less detailed, less epic. For example, compare new Patches with old one - the difference is very clear. Incindius is a big standout for me, but many say this artwork is old. I think Hearthstone has gotten to the point where devs figured out a very clear and consistent image for cards and now this is what they always direct artists to go for. Even TItans (which is considered to be very Warcraft expansion) still feel too cartoonish imo. In addition to that, we also see that some old artists no longer work with Hearthstone anymore. You find some old cool Hearthstone art only to realize that this artist no longer works with them or if they do then it's pretty clear that their art direction changed due to the developed image for HS cards I was talking about before.
