A Look into the History of Bus Transportation | MotorWeek FYI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We talk a lot about cars, suvs and trucks here on Motorweek, but buses are a big part of the history of transportation. Well, the largest and most telling collection of buses in the country can be found at a museum in Central Pennsylvania. Our FYI reporter Stephanie Hart was on board as these giant people movers took to the open roads to tell their stories.

I drove New Look buses at my university where the ex-municipal units were used as campus shuttles. They were outdated, crude, lacked comfort features for driver and passengers, and steering them was was a workout without power steering. Yet strangely it was very enjoyable and the two examples we had were always a favorite for us drivers! Many preferred them to the newer buses at the time, and if I remember correctly, their dispatch reliability was better than all the other buses in our eclectic little fleet!

The GMC New Look was the best ever bus there is. This was a mainstay in many cities in the United States and Canada. A friend I know has one one used by Fun Bus down Southern California. It is a 1981 GMC T6H-4523N which was built in Canada and it is essentially an imported or foreign vehicle.

I used to drive city bus. When I left, they brought out a new fleet of CNG powered buses. Those things were fast. They couldn't handle highways that well, but they were a blast to throw around the city compared to the garbage hybrid buses that were barely putzing around. The fact is, most bus companies out there still us and prefer diesel. The only time you'll find a fully electric bus is in jam packed cities like D.C., and even then, those buses cant go for more than 8 hours without needing a charge. Public transportation will be relying on Diesel and CNG for many decades to come.

some of the info here is incorrect as well as the pronunciation of the name Fageol. The fishbowl bus shown here was not used in the film. This one has a glaring difference between it and the real movie bus. The missing "D" window on the right side. This was common on the 1986 Canadian made buses. The last year they were made GM must have run out of parts and they didn't have right side "D" windows. Also they showed a flxible bus when they were talking about a Scenicruiser.

As cool as it is to see these classic buses, it's sad to see 5180, the GM fishbowl from Santa Monica, being the most misrepresented bus in their collection. That bus was never part of the movie Speed, although the ones used in the movie were painted similar. The movie ones were decalled differently from the actual to give that degree lf separation. This bus was never used as a backup in Speed, nor was it even on any of the production sets. The real and only key valid history of this bus is 5180 is the absolute last GM fishbowl bus off the production line from Canada, and built 9 years after the last GM fishbowl came off the US assembly line.
