A look back at Hong Kong 25 years since the handover

Hong Kong has undergone major changes since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997. From closer economic integration with mainland China to the upheaval of the 2019 protests, the city has evolved and adapted during times of opportunity and uncertainty. A quarter of a century since, and halfway through the period of promised autonomy, the next chapter is ready to be written. The SCMP looks back at key milestones of the past 25 years since the city became a Chinese Special Administrative Region.

Why didnt Britain let HK self rule itself instead of invading and colonising it Jan. 25, 1841? Throughout the 180 years of colonialism, why didnt they allow HK to vote for their leader? Instead Britain just installed whoever they wanted to be Chief of HK ... I guess it's only a problem when Beijing does it?

It's still self ruled but only a few changes have been implemented. Only a fool would think this wouldn't happen. What you think an Island who choose their authority will suddenly accept one party rule over night? You think it's right to wait 50 years and then just on the eve of year 50 suddenly it's "Hey no more elections, it's one party now"? That would be chaos. No, instead the process is gradual. The smart think to do is let people accept of what is inevitable. HK is part of China and will forever be. If someone thinks otherwise they should go to their masters the UK, I hear they even gave citizenships to Hong Kongers when it was a UK colony.

The funny paradox is Hong Kong was a colony, never elected governor, never had independent constitution, never had independent diplomacy, never had independent military and thus never had “democracy”. 25 years passed pretty fast and one thing China failed to learn from Taiwan is education reform. Taiwan had an education reform about 20 some years ago, teaching kids they are not Chinese and Republic of China (their own country) is an invader, as long as Hong Kong keeping the colonial British education, Hong Kong kids will continue to identify with the old master not China.

The Treaty of Nanking was officially signed by Qing Dynasty and Britain. However, it is not signed by Carrie Lam, John Lee, Xi Jinping, Josh Wong, Jimmy Lai, Mao, none of these communist officials exists in signing the Treaty of Nanking. The next day, the U.S state, government, and treasury started to wake up by reading comments, sounded alarmed, and had to build the entire navy fleet next to California, Hawaii, and more military and navy spending missile silos. The U.S even consider demolish Xi Jingping's house in IOWA and putting a missile silo base. U.S is not joking around with OLD COLD WAR STYLE. They use change decon code. The reason why it got alarmed by the U.S government. It has nothing to do with Taiwan. The U.S needs to send more weapons to Ukraine, Europe, South Korea, etc. It's madness. Do you know anything about Truman Doctrine? Truman told Congress that "it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." Truman contended that because totalitarian regimes coerced free peoples, they automatically represented a threat to international peace and the national security of the United States. Other countries will not be free from communism. Did you know what happened to Greek Civil War? both communists never received military aid. Greek and Turkey started to create a civil war. The war ended in 1949. Did you know what happened to the last king of Russia? Nicholas II was assassinated by Russian Communist Rebels. This is why you have WESTERN BLOC, NATO, etc. it's toxic.
