A Look at The Sword of Kahless (Deep Space Nine)

Opinionated DS9 Episode Guide continues its look at Kor, where he teams up with Worf and Jadzia to look for a legendary sword that could unite all the Klingons together and usher in a new age of headbutting for all! Plus, Nicotine Nemo.

That reminded me of the episode of the Animaniacs episode where the Warners and their sister met that character voiced by Ben Stein who told that really long story about meeting Bob Barker. LOL

It's not often that it's the younger of the two characters who's overly reverent about the past and the elder who's more pragmatic. It's a unique juxtaposition, which highlights both their differences well, with Worf ever the romantic and Kor, while fanciful about his deeds, has actually lived the life of a Klingon soldier. Both believe their giving the sword its due reverence, but their interpretation infuriate the other.

it's always fun to see people who've lived from the TOS era into TNG/DS9/Voyager time, though it is pretty fun to see what happens to a Klingon that manages to live long enough to become old, I imagine most Klingons don't exactly plan for retirement or other old age stuff.

11:40 The story of NEUTRO the strangest Hero of them all. For he has no brain! NEUTRO doesn't know the difference between good and evil! Seriously, that was one of Linkara's earliest comic reviews, and it's a fun one. He turns it briefly into a musical. Sadly, NEUTRO was only a one issue thing, as it never got any more to its story. I mean, even Sultry Teenage Super Foxes got TWO issues...because the world is terrible sometimes.

Now we get the Kor trilogy in DS9, though I wonder why you jumped straight to Sword of Kahless instead of doing Blood Oath first. The Nicotine Nemo bit remains to be one of those jokes I have a soft spot for.

I think it might be a case of avoiding the nesting backstory. Pretty much all of Trek is required to cover any of Trek. So, pick a minor connection.

A character's lowest point *should* be one step below their perceived lowest point. To say they're not at a line, but past it with both feet. When fans took issue with what Worf did, saying that wasn't him, they were wrong and right at the same time.

I sometimes think that the intentions (re: effects of the sword) were to somehow shade into sort of magical realism but with deliberate ambiguity.

I mostly remember this episode because it ends up taking up a mission or two during the first Star Trek: Armada game. When you only have 20 of them, taking a few to follow up on a single episode plot like this is an interesting way to spend it. BTW, I would still recommend that, and since he originally did this episode, it's now on Steam and GOG, along with most other trek games. Save that RTS Star Fleet Universe game(Slightly different from Trek proper), and Birth of the Federation, which sadly, is a fantastic 4X game with trek trappings all the way down. Minor factions being one off species, and almost ever major one represented in some way.

Even ignoring how it's a cliche, it's, if anything, weirder that there aren't booby traps in a Klingon treasure tomb. These are Klingons we're talking about! The warrior people who routinely go through punishing trials and traditions in search of perceived honor. You want ancient glories reawakened? You'd better be ready for a 3 new batches of scars from overcoming death traps to prove it!

5/10? Come on. Yeah I know 5/10 DS9 is worth a 9/10 in most other shows, but even by the standard of that show that episode was powerful.
