A Look at How JD Martinez Broke Out for the Detroit Tigers | Stat Stories
Спорт
JD Martinez was released by the Houston Astros prior to the 2014 season. In other words, he was cut from a team that had lost 111 games the previous season. He would join the Detroit Tigers and became a surprise star for a division winning team. So what changed for him?
In this video I look at Martinez and his relationship with Craig Wallenbrock and Robert Van Scoyoc. These were two hitting instructors who had no professional baseball experience, but they revitalized the career of Martinez with instruction that was unorthodox at the time. Instead of focusing on line drives, Martinez would try to elevate the ball and maximize his power. This focus on launch angle has become a big part of hitting philosophies now, but wasn't popular at the time.
Martinez would swing and miss more often, but was still able to drive the ball to all parts of the field, and make more quality contact instead of just putting the ball in play. He remains a quality hitter to this day, and that earned him a massive contract from the Boston Red Sox in 2018. And Van Scoyoc benefited too, as he was named as hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the 2019 season.

For anyone who wanted a video on a different slugger named JD who broke out after leaving Houston, that video will happen in the near future! Also, shoutout to Lorenzo for helping with research!

It’s insane how talented the 2014 tigers were and that they still got swept by the Orioles (who in my opinion deserve their own video)

If the Royals has ended up playing the Tigers in the playoffs that season, it would’ve been a series for the ages. They had a great rivalry that whole year and the division was lost by one game.

@C R I found this crazy too when I was first getting into baseball, I suspect it has a lot more to do with money than anything else.
When you’re from Michigan, this is just painful to see as all the memories come flooding back of the tigers from 2006-2015 who could be considered one of the most underachieved teams in baseball history

Miggy forr sure had a huge impact on his career. JD was so great to have in Detroit
The biggest difference maker for JD was changing from #14 to #28. Without that change he would've never become the player he is today
We blew it in 2014 . Much respect to JD Go Tigers!
as a huge tigers fan thank you. he’s one of my favorite tigers of all times and a super nice guy. he threw me a lot of balls in right field

I love J.D! I am a huge Red Sox fan and I wish he was still on the Red Sox! I have also met him and got his autograph
Can you do one of these with Justin Turner. It’s weird when he goes to the dodgers ( or his home city ) and he becomes a whole different hitter.

I fondly remember JD's hay days in Detriot. Dombrowski still was making so many good movies, the 2014 tigers were ridiculously stacked...
J.D is the best DH playing in the MLB today
As someone from Toledo, he quickly became a fan favorite in his time there
We miss him in Detroit great video.
Always a good day when Mr. Here Baseball posts a KZread video
I love your vids do you think you can do a vid on what happened to Kazuhiro Sasaki who was a Japanese relief pitcher for the Seattle Mariners from 2000-2003 would be a great vid if you can!!

Yeah but there’s on evidence that he participated in the cheating, only the video replay coordinator. Plus, in 2017, with no cheating ever linked anywhere close to him, he still nearly hit 1.100

Great video! Thanks for a tigers video.
I religiously watch every video! You're killing it bobby!
Thanks for this cool video, I didn't know he won 2 silver sluggers in one year. That's insane.
Very underrated channel! Keep up the good work ❤
I've been waiting on a JD episode, thanks OHB!
Fantastic video, as always 😊
JD actually won two silver sluggers in the same year that's insane
This made my day
A video on Jacoby Ellsbury’s monster 2011 season would be interesting.
great work man love baseball. keep up the great work
Great video
He changed his stance and swing in Detroit. In HOU, it looked like he’d dislocate his hip when he swung. In Detroit, his swing was much more open
When he batted cleanup for a healthy Miguel Cabrera, that was terrifying for opposing pitchers.
Can you do a video about the 2019 twins??
Also, Martinez was swing down on the ball cause that what he was taught. He fixed this and told the Astros to give him a chance. They only gave him Pinch Hit ABs in spring training and he couldn’t get in a rhythm. They released him and regretted it forever.
I lived in the Detroit metro area at the time he played for the Tigers. He changed his swing after seeing highlight clip after highlight clip of Ryan Braun on TV. That was when Braun finally admitted to his steroid use.
Nice keep it up
Idk why, but the opening for your music always makes me think of Persona 5
Do a video on shohie ohtani and how he's a star pitcher and hitter.
Do a video on Chris Sale, and if he will continue to regress
Great video! Could you maybe do a video on Mitch Garver’s breakout season and if he’s actually as bad of a defensive catcher as people think he is?
you should do something about the top prospects and how they got there
You should create a video where you discuss Andrew Jones’ career.
Can you do a video on hanley Ramirez and the different phases of his career
Nice video 😉
Baseball is so weird compared to all other sports, you can see every bit of humanity on the field.
Can you do a video on Max Muncy from his college days till his current dodger days?
Could you do a video on top first Baseball in MLB and which one you think is the best?
Please do the quick tear down and rebuild of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Could u do a vid on the 2014-15 royals
How about a breakdown on Mike Trout Ronald Acuna Jr Juan Soto and Fernado Tatis Jr because they are all considered 5 tool players and have a pretty simlar Athletic ability
I'd love to see a video on the change in Chris Carpenter's career after joining the Cardinals. Why is he an ace once his age 27/28 season passes? (the typical peak season in a players career I believe)
Also, JD won the World Series with the Red Sox
So since you’ve done this video, do one on players who have fallen off after trying to improve their launch angle (ie Jason Kipnis)
