A Look at Edward Maria Wingfield, First President of the Virginia Colony - Dig Deeper, Episode 26
David M. Givens, (Jamestown Rediscovery’s Director of Archaeology), provides information about the significant role played by Edward Maria Wingfield in establishing the first Virginia colony. Wingfield was a leader in forming the Virginia Company of London and the only Grantee in the Virginia Charter of 1606 to travel with the first settlers to America. Based on his considerable military experience, Wingfield selected the settlement site, designed the 1607 triangular fort, and was elected the First President of the Virginia Colony.

In the terrible winter of 1609-1610, when James Fort turned to cannibalism, why didn't men go out and hunt deer and elk?

I thought the same question. I’m sure they tried very hard to hunt game but sometimes there just aren’t any around. Also, I have read that tree ring evidence indicates that there was a drought at that time which probably would have caused the larger game to migrate elsewhere prior to winter for vegetation. Even the Indian tribes who were far more adapted to the area likely suffered badly. I can’t imagine how bad that would have sucked, freezing cold, fishing in the frozen river is hopeless and no animals to hunt. Plus no provisions stored up from not being established. Would have been horrible.
