A Little Update - Why I Downsized My Collection

wearethechange.carrd.co/
As you can see from my explanation in the video, there is no deep reasoning behind me having to downsize my collection a little bit and hold back on buying new releases. It's really not serious at all, but I hope everyone understands. I want to keep posting content for you guys to make up for the lack of unboxings that will appear in the future. I still feel like there's a lot now but I feel like it will become less and less as time goes by. Hopefully everyone will be okay with different types of vids from me :D

Love you all!! :))
Thanks for watching~

i can clearly see why you downsized your collection. i hope everyone knows that you can be a fan without collecting *everything* from them and you don’t need to buy every single version of an album to be a real ‘fan’. you can just be a fan by enjoying their music / streaming their music & supporting them. i’ll still support you since i find your videos really therapeutic and calming❤️❤️

I understand wholeheartedly, companies need to slow down with the amount of versions of a single album. I started stanning NCT when their releases were limited to one or two version so i started a collection since i adore their music, however, SM has gotten insane with versions and pc’s. I limited myself to Taeil, then to only NCT 127 and now to only a couple versions because it’s unsustainable to me. I loved having a complete collection but after NCT 2020 and the insane amount of versions i got overwhelmed.

Gosh, I felt this deep in my soul. It's totally overboard with the (for example, FIVE!) multiple different versions. Of course no one forces us to buy these albums but there's something to be said for how...incomplete it feels when you know you can't get every version. Sigh. So I agree that it's healthy to detach at least a little from it.

im actually happy to see you starting to priortise yourself and your reality more because im sure that collecting albums is one of the most satisfying thing a teenage or young adult will do but as we enter adulthood, esp since u moved out, money is a huge problem and collecting albums will hinder alot of chances where u get to find a better apartment to live in. I definitely understand the storage issues as well and im glad you start drawing lines becuz some ppl just collect for the sake of collecting, even if the prices are insane. People always said to fangirl rationally and im happy to see you making steps for yourself while trying to keep this habit, hopefully u will achieve ur wish to move out soon and when u are financially independent again, more space in ur own apartment, u can always bring the passion in 👍👍👍

Definitely understand your struggle, Katie. Collecting physical albums just take too much space, plus I move kinda frequently so it's a little hassle to put everything in boxes and shipping to move it from plot A to Plot B can be costly too. Sometimes I don't even buy the albums and just purchase the photocards.

The growing amount of versions for albums is lowkey painful lol. No one forces us to buy these albums but there's something to be said for how...incomplete it feels when you know you can't get every version. I totally get wanting to step back from trying to collect every little thing. And as much as I love how packed with content a thick album may be, they're kind of the bane of my kpop stan existence because of how they take up space.

Theres a lot of guilt that comes with it which is so weird? Not being able to buy every piece of merch that comes out feels horrible but I literally don’t have any more space!! i honestly am getting annoyed with companies releasing more than 5 versions, i haven’t even completed at least monsta x’s recent releases but starship thought it would be fun to make the already existing 5 versions (4 standard albums and the kihno) to more than 10 versions (kihno, 4 standard, 5 jewel cases since shownu isn’t active, and a limited one). thankfully they did not do this for cravity and wonho so i can easily complete theirs when i get money.

I know you uploaded this a while ago but this video just gave me a huge relief. I had the same exact thoughts about my collection recently and I was not too sure if I really wanted to downsize. i now made the decision to just keep the things I use and to sell everything else. I have basically sold my entire random merch at this point and I am probably going to sell a lot more until only albums for 5 groups are left. I also stopped to collect photocards and it just felt really good. Learning that you do not need evrything your faves drop was a long journey but videos like these motivate me to really do it. So thank you for talking about it, it is really helpful.

It's fine, we all understand! ❤️ I used to want to get everything everyone was releasing, especially to make unboxings, but I realised I needed to be more economical and save space. I now only buy/trade enough photocards to fill into one 9 pocket page per album, and I don't get Japanese albums or season's greetings anymore. Plus I only get 1 or 2 versions per album release. I love opening the albums and supporting groups I like, but it does become a lot when you like so many groups and there are soooo many versions these days. I personally love buying myself albums. I currently have 11, nowhere comparable to other peoples collections, but I'm really happy with it. I don't buy every single version. My rule for myself when it comes to buying albums is that I look at the photocards, and if I could ever be disappointed by one of the pulls, I don't get it. I only want albums I love. I also don't "collect." I keep all of my pulls, and don't go out of my way to buy photocards online to complete a set. I never want to be a collector to the point where my hobby of buying albums for the pure feeling of pulling a photocard would turn into a feeling of guilt, or something that made me feel like I was required to. I actually have a google doc of which albums I like, and which version. Also, if there's solo jackets, don't guilt yourself into buying each of the members. Just because you bought 1/8 solo jackets or something, that doesn't mean you love the other members any less. I actually am only a fan of 5 groups. I definitely like other groups, but that doesn't mean I need their albums. For example, in kep1er, I really like Hikaru. Except I barely know the other members. That's why I wouldn't buy a kep1er album. If I would ever be disappointed with one of my pulls if it wasn't her, then I wouldn't buy it. In my opinion, I never want to be a solo stan. With the 5 groups I love, and buy albums for, I would never be disappointed with pulling a certain member, and I love that. I do definitely plan on buying more albums in the future, because that's what makes me happy. It's a good feeling. If that good feeling ever turns into something bad, then something isn't right. Also, you should never beat yourself up for not buying all versions, this hobby is expensive :')

I've been a kpop fan (sm/yg fan actually) for almost 12 years now and i only have 11 kpop albums and i made myself sure that those albums are just my favourite 11 out of 10 masterpieces perfectly crafted the soundtrack of my life albums. If i don't love at least 3/4 of the songs than i won't buy it. The size of kpop albums has always bother me because i'm a big music collector and i buy a lot of phisical music, so jewel cases versions have been my thing lately and yes, the photo albums are nice and beautiful but i never even see them often to justify the price and that's what we're actually paying, the photos are expensier than the cd which is insane! I'm all for supporting the musicians i love, but i'd rather not have every album version and spend like 20 dollars on a jewel case and go to their eventual concert in my country which are rare but when/if it happens i want to be there.

totally understandable! i just took the plunge a couple weeks ago and bought my first albums ever (nct). but im in canada, like you, and the shipping fees and the overall price that it can end up being for just a few albums shocked me so much that buying them was more stressful than fun - which was not a good feeling. So yeah! Do your thing! I love your videos, they were very helpful when i was choosing what albums to buy and i hope you figure out your storage issue!

K, I'm late to the party, but I'll tell you this. I'm old, like "got into kpop with Rising Sun by DBSK" kinda old. I have actually thrown away albums, I still have a few (a FEW!) old ones left that you can't even find for sale anymore and yet I never even look at them. That's what happened to me. Do I need albums? No, I have Spotify ffs. I have cursed out photo cards and refuse to collect them. I hate multiple editions of albums too - it's the same album, just sell the photo albums and cards separately ugh. Do I still want them? Yes, but only because I like having them, that's it. Pure materialism. It is NOT a good investment and whether people like it or not, kpop doesn't age well, groups come and go, and we fall for every cash milking strategy there is (me included). If you downsize - it's good.

I do understand, and I do also have a similar problem just like this. It’s hard to find the storage to put all these albums, especially if I don’t have enough room. I’ve thought about it before, and I also had to limit myself with the physical albums. I only collect all of the albums from certain groups, and depending on the album if I really love it or not and the amount of versions, I’ll buy just one version or purchase the whole set. I also limit myself from buying from a wide range of different groups because once I start collecting them, I’ll start to get used to it. And that is why I currently, only collect certain albums (the ones I really like the most). I really think the music is great, I just have to chose which albums I like the best, then I buy it.

I feel you so much!!! I don’t like the feeling of being so overwhelmed by having a lot of stuffs in my room. That’s actually why I don’t buy many photobooks and all. And also I have that feeling of buying everything or nothing. I now it’s kind of weird and bothersome but it how it feels. Actually I still feel bad about not buying many things from idols that I like and that’s why I got a little resentment (???) about myself????? For not buying all. I think is really a problem we got from many stuffs produced by companies and it’s like (somehow) an obligation we create??? That’s why I think is the best idea downsize the amount of buying. At least, until you want.

I really like how you've come out and discussed this problem I've been seeing with Kpop collecting. I feel like a lot of people think that if you collect a group, you should buy every version or you're not really a fan. I love collecting music from different groups all over the world, but yeah, it gets to be a lot of money and space taken up if one collects more than one album version or other things from the group. Sometime in the future I would like to also make a commentary on this topic. I think it's a need. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on collecting and I like how you're honest. I hope others will be encouraged to consider their own personal priorities when it comes to personal things and collecting. I really enjoy your videos by the way and still continue to watch them.

As a multi stan, I only recently started getting more albums to my collection bc I'm finally able to buy them more easily than before. However, since I like to collect way too many different things, I personally limited the amount of albums I wanna buy: for me the look/photobook of the album matters the most since I don't use the cd's + I buy many as second hand. Multiple versions are exhausting since albums aren't cheap...jewel cases are pretty great but yeah, it's still a lot. Also, I realized that I certainly do not need every single thing my fav artist puts out so now I don't worry too much. I love your unboxings and your vids are my main source when I try to think do I want a certain album or not. But it's good to downsize if its needed!

Yeah, this is very common with large collections, all the things you talked about, and you are right. Dialing back is hard, because there are so many wonderful talented artists. But constantly expanding is not sustainable in terms of money and space and there are times you need to prioritize your personal goals. Maybe sometime in the future you can dedicate a separate room for your kpop collection, so you don't feel overcrowded by it when you are trying to rest or do other things. Or you could get cabinet type shelves with doors. I really enjoy your videos and your collection and am always grateful that you share them with the world.

as a newbie kpop stan, i'm shocked at all the albums i have collected so far. in a short amount of time, i made it to the point where i have no more room for anything 😅. i didn't even like buying physical albums even before i became a kpop stan 😭. i kinda just followed what everyone else did but as an adult you do have to think about these kinda things especially when you're on a budget. that's why i'm thankful i stan groups with not a lot of members/versions of albums and just stick with buying my favorite album version for the other groups i like. the support is always there tho ❤️‍🔥!!!!! this vid was a wakeup call tho lol ㅠㅠ

Completely understandable. I’ve been downsizing a lot of my collections as well. With all the different versions, POB, and limited releases companies make are just too much T-T you don’t have to collect everything to be a fan. I’ve actually found myself a lot happier just focusing on the actual content/music the groups put out rather than the collecting aspect of it. :)

Its a nightmare and I'm definitely thinking about downsizing too because at the end of the day collecting is a hobby for me. I have to start prioritising my life because I plan on quitting my current job and making some changes in my life too..

I totally get this! Right now I think there are also certain trends that are just making it way too expensive, difficult, and honestly overwhelming to collect. I myself am a fan of having 1 jewel case version, like ITZY, because I like how they save space, but with every company doing what feels like at least 4 versions, some sort of special edition, and then member jewel cases on top of that, its getting to be too much for collectors. I remember when 3 versions was starting to feel like a lot, but now for big groups it's like greater than 5 at the minimum. I know it makes them a lot of money but IMO it really diminishes the fun of collecting. Hopefully this trend will fade away because for people that collect more than just their ult, its way too much.

tbh i totally get you! at the end of the day we have other things to take care of in our lives and kpop is just a small part of it. i stopped collecting albums because i just don't find joy in collecting them and it just takes up so much space. i do buy photocards instead and its way easier to store! also my fave group disbanded so for me there's really no point in collecting stuff anyway!
