Interesting video. I moved to Durant from Dallas a couple years ago. There is a lot more to Durant than the little jog you took through downtown (which there's more to than Main St) next time you come through eat at Main Street BBQ, you will thank me later :) also Ft. Washita (Wash it taw) is fabulous as is the Chickasaw Whitehouse which is located a short distance up Hwy 78 in Emit. Tons of history out here so next time spend some time on the West side of Hwy 69, Lake Durant is out that way as well, country setting and it does have a small RV park. You missed the really pretty parts of Durant but there's always next time.

Is Fort Washita open again? When I came through and made this video it was closed because of CO vid. I'll be back through sometime in the next year.

@@Hugodwarf yes. It opened back in June. It is absolutely worth a couple hours visit. There are two cemeteries there, one is a confederate. A small museum of artifacts found on the grounds including a couple confederate uniforms, several log cabins and a plethora of history. A few miles up Hwy 78 is the Chickasaw Whitehouse, another must see. It is featured in the movie Tey Ata on Netflix, a true story about a Chickasaw woman who made history. I could spend all day at the Whitehouse. Since you were through the Choctaw Cultural Center opened up across Hwy 69 from the Casino and KOA place you stayed. It is definitely worth going to see. I lived in Dallas all of my life, only visited Choctaw Casino and thought that WAS Durant. Boy was I wrong. After we retired we moved to Durant and I have a steady stream of friends coming up here to visit me, I always take them on the Grand Tour which is downtown Durant which is quickly becoming a destination, Southeastern Oklahoma University which is as old as SMU, Lake Durant, Ft. Washita, Chickasaw Whitehouse then we stop at Blake Sheltons place in Tishomingo called Old Reds for lunch or dinner, then we come back to Durant through Madill/Kingston and across Lake Texoma which is a sight to see all of its own so our tour pretty much takes us from Durant up around the Northeastern shore of Lake Texoma south to Madill and back west across the Roosevelt Bridge crossing the lake. I always want my friends to know that Durant is not just the Casino, it's a great place to visit and an even better place to live. I live on the western side closest to the Lake. Ft. Washita and Lake Durant are in Texas terms, in my backyard. It's been the most wonderful experience and much needed lifestyle adjustment. The people of Durant have restored my respect in fellow man, I slid in here from big D sideways with a big city attitude, little D has shown me there really are some genuinely nice people left and there was no need to bring the big city attitude any further North than the Red River. I still have it, it unleashes within 6" of when my tires hit the Collin County line going South, by the time I get through McKinney, I'm am in straight up big D mode, cussing and ready to start swinging a bat at bad drivers. Next time you are through Main Street BBQ on the East side and Billy Sims BBQ on the West side are worth a visit. There's a hamburger place in Kingston called the Burger House, the burgers there remind me of the hamburgers we used to get in to 60s in Dallas, greasy spoon type. Of you are looking for good Mexican food ....Stay in Texas. That's the only thing I miss about my big girl Dallas....the Mexican Food! The new hotel and Casino are complete now and worth a stop and stroll. The sports bar alone is magnificent but they have added so many neat restaurants and boutiques. I don't like to gamble much either but since living here, we only go to eat at the casino....the thrill is gone with slot machines 🙃 It is important to note that in my 2 years here, I have inspired 6 of my friends to move up here. Lower cost of living, beautiful country and the small town charm is just the medicine needed to a bunch of scarred up ole city dogs!

Not sure about the half Indian as the founder. It's my understanding that French trappers traveled down the Mississippi from Quebec to Louisiana and took Choctaw squaws for wives. Then traveled on the Trail of tears to Oklahoma (via wagons due to the Durants wealth) and Durant family founded the town of Durant OK. My wife is part Choctaw and a descendant of the Durant family.

Then she is my relative, I am a descendant of Dixon Durant, the founder of Durant, Oklahoma through his daughter Mollie Durant. We settled among the Choctaw Indians in 1776. Captain Louis Durant is my five time great grandfather. Yakoke for writing your reply as my sister has already joined the tribe, and I am just waiting for my birth certificate to come back from California to do so myself. Captain Louis Durant’s father was Joseph Durant, a French man if I traced my family history correctly.

I am wondering if Dixon or his father who owned Fisher Point Trading post is credited with opening the first general store though?

You are right though that the family married Choctaw wives. My 5x great grandfather married a Choctaw Indian as did Pierre/Fisher Durant. The Durant’s travelled across the Trail of Tears with Pierre Durant leading the family, Louis was old already by the time they crossed it. Both Durant, Mississippi and Durant, Oklahoma were towns named in honor of our ancestors. Durant, Mississippi- Captain Louis Durant, Durant, Oklahoma - Dixon Durant.

@@user-zo1jv4eg7k Yes my wife is related to you and all you mention sounds correct. I also know the Durant's were wealthy by standards of the day, so the trail of tears was done by the comfort of wagons and not the misery we hear of for many other Indians.

Gotta Love the Durant area! Lived in nearby Denison & Sherman in 03-07. I wish I had lived in Durant or nearby Calera instead. In 2010 visited Durants 3Rivers Museum & saw some historical bits of the town.Good museum. If I move south in retirement this is the area to go. Thanks for this video.
