A Letter for Wales (1960) - extract

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

'A Letter for Wales' is showing as part of Through the Dragon's Eye: Wales on Screen, a major new collection of over 100 titles weaving together a century of film and television from the BFI National Archive and the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, welcoming the new BFI Mediatheque at Wrexham Library.
British Transport Films made dozens of travelogues extolling the virtues of parts of the UK, and this is their love letter to Wales - quite literally, as actor Donald Houston's experience of posting a letter at Paddington Station (shot in crepuscular black and white) triggers a series of Technicolor memories of a Welsh boyhood.
He recalls the Snowdon mountain railway and the bridges over the Menai Strait, the docks at Holyhead offering passage to Ireland, while Milford Haven sits at the heart of oil-fuelled global trade. He marvels at the ingenuity behind a hydroelectric dam, and the craft and skill of the slate quarrymen, while a trip to Tenby Castle unlocks deeper folk memories of the ferocious Owen Glendower... (Michael Brooke)

Beautiful scenes. Lots of memories of going for a day out to Tenby, which was one of my mum's favourite places to visit.

This was shown on Channel 4 on the 25th Sept 1990 during the Going Loco season. Not sure if it's been shown before or since then. I will try and upload the recording I have but it's likely youtube will go mental over copyright, or rather BFI who now owns it.

jim miller I took a photo of my wife on honeymoon in Tenby in Sept 1975 standing next to Sue Gina. It’s was in the harbour and the tide was out. She stood next to the name on the side of the boat standing in front of Gina with just Sue showing. My wife’s name was Sue. After all these years I still remember the boats name. Small world.

Love the narration "when we were children it was always warm and full of promise". The summers would like that today if they wouldn't keep spraying our skies with chemtrails (and yes they do exist) which are dramatically changing the weather.

I can't imagine how those light four wheel goods wagons can stay on the tracks when there's a heavy snow. We have a hard enough time with 120 ton freight cars derailing in bad snow let alone trying to run those small wagons. I can't understand why Britain has kept those small wagons in service up to this day. It must be track or gauge issues. The could run half the number of trains they do now if they were using 50 foot wagons.

gonna be a bit of a stinking pedant here, but the blurb makes mention of 'Owen Glendower', surely this should be Owain Glyndwr? no?

I have this on tape, which I think was shown on channel 4 in 1990 as part of the 'Going Loco' railway season, or there abouts. Never been to Tenby but always wanted to go; I suspect it, like alot of other British/Welsh seaside towns has gone to the dogs now and is just a rundown town full of druggies, chavs or a place lacking the soul and character which it once had. Hope I'm wrong.

Tenby is still a lovely seaside town. You really must go. All the scenes in the film are much the same today - even the open boat that goes to Caldet island.

Hello. Can anyone help this American with identifying the flag displayed at 0:45 (flying above the building) and 1:08? They look to be the same flag to me. I'm familiar with the Welsh "Red Dragon" flag ,but not this flag, which seems to be one of the many variations I see on the English "St.George's Cross" flag. Cheers!

I'm not sure *who these people think they are* , but you *cannot* do or say those things *without consequence* these days.
