IRL, the hand to hand combat instructor, was a former police instructor in the British Crown Colony of Singapore and co-inventor of the Sykes-Fairbairn combat knife (and how to use it in combat). Widely recounted to be one of the 'knife men' in the world.

When I was in my basic training we had a former navy seal and a former SAS instructor in hand-to-hand combat. They chose me as their opponent. I managed to take them both down due to years of mixed martial arts training. The navy seal got offended, while the former SAS was impressed and urged me to teach him my techniques, particularly in submission. Two entirely different reactions. One was immature and rigid while the other was mature and dynamic. I was impressed by the latter who still is my friend.

Well in this case the SEAL thought that as Navy SEALs or SOFs in general, they're unbeatable. Well the truth is, most SOF operators would lose to someone like u who has training and experience in hand to hand combat. American SOFs are great and capable in what they do, but they're just not trained thoroughly in hand to hand or even knife combat. If anything the ROK Army SF and Navy SEALs train intensively in them (there are videos showing their hand to hand & knife fighting skills no joke). Another country whose SF operators are also great at hand to hand I'd say is Israel. Israel's SFs are trained in Krav Maga, a sophisticated martial arts that consolidates techniques from several other martial arts and is effective against real-world threats, which they invented.

It's cuz they think they're the pinnacle of human combat cuz they got some training in the army but the truth is they've never pushed themselves to the limit like an athlete does, obsessimg over the minutia of their performance, trying to reach a top percentile in the world. Same reason why SEALS for some reason thought any of them can EASILY beat former UFC champion Sean Strickland and in reality the skill difference was so insanely high that it looked like the seal just stepped in the ring for the first time, when in fact he was an experienced fighter himself.

You don't understand drill then. It's easy to teach men to fight, harder to teach them cohesion.
