A Lens I Can't Live Without... It's a 24-70.

For years I've used 24-70 zoom lenses for my landscape photography - or the equivalents when I was shooting micro four thirds. In the last couple of years I've tried to get myself away from them, simply because I don't find them particularly exciting to use. Well, it hasn't gone well...

hello sir a fan from Bangladesh. Sir, I'm gonna buy a camera on Monday (may be), which one you recommend? A7riv or A7iv? Fortunately both are same price in Bangladesh. I like wildlife, landscape, weddings, product photography. And ya I'm a film graduate, I make films.

I don't have a 24-70. I find that while I can live without an f/2.8 lens, I really do appreciate the extra reach that I get with a 24-105. Yes, it means that I am restricted to f/4.0 or slower, but I love the extra reach. It also means that instead of a 70-200, I have opted for the 100-400GM as my "long lens".

You won't be sad with the SIGMA 24-70 2.8. I use it on my A73 and it's amazing with consistently sharp, beautiful shots from that lens for half the price of the SONY which with its current version isn't really any better outside of a scientific test. Thanks for another year of great videos and content James!! Merry Christmas to you and your family

Came back to rewatch this one since I'm off to buy a Sigma 24-70 on sale this morning. I had forgotten you started out with a sigma before upgrading to the Sony GMII. I was needing my confidence to be bolstered that I was making the right choice VS the Tamron 28-75. If nothing else I'll get a good upper body workout from the extra weight.

I also have the Sigma 24-70 DG DN for Sony, and it's my most used of a dozen fast Sony mount full frame zooms and prime lenses. I shoot landscapes as well as urban streetscapes and architectural, and this is my workhorse for those subjects. I find it is a touch sharper than my excellent 16-35 GM where they overlap between 24-35mm, and it's equally sharp up to 70mm. I like that it shares the same 82mm filter thread as the 16-35 GM. Good choice James. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing!

I use the sigma 24-70 on my Lumix S5, in fact I only own 1 other lens for my S5, being a 85mm f1.8 (which I got for free due to a promotion for buying the s5, which Panasonic didn’t have stock for the lens they were meant to give me so instead offered me the 85 as a replacement, can’t complain 😂) Anyway I was gonna say I love the sigma. Something about the lens just pops, it’s got that 3D effect I think, being short and yet not clinical. Brilliant lens.

@@daveinportland Definitely an amazing lens but for portraits and street photography IMO. For landscape no thank you! That beast is double the weight of the 24-105 G! 24-105 is a no brainer for landscape photography, coming from smaller sensor I always wonder how people can end up with a 24-70 while 24-105 is available. 70mm is way too short when you need to put emphasize on a subject

I am also a fan of the 24-105 f/4. I shot Canon DSLRs for about 20 years and that was my workhorse, I've been shooting Sony about 5 years now and the 24-105 was initially my workhorse. I shoot a lot more with primes these days, but, if I feel the need to reach for a zoom, it will be the 24-105 about 75% of the time. I know many who love their 24-70 f/2.8 and I am not trying to throw any shade on them or the lens. If it works for you, wonderful! For me, the extra reach of the 24-105 has always trumped the loss of 1 stop of light. But that's just me-your mileage may vary.

I did the same. the 24-105 f4 is a great lens and the only time I truly want more than 105mm, I want a LOT more. My other zoom lens is the 200-600 for wildlife or shots of the moon.

  • @lokisg3

Usually it depend on situation, if you are more to long exposure, daytime and outdoor then 24-105 f4 is good choice but the lens suffer in low light thus not a good idea for night shoot or indoor. For 24-70 f2.8 is more versatile for day and night photographic or indoor with low light but most lens that are build with this focal length tend to be heavy and filter size tend to be around 82 diameter. Either way, it depend what's your ideas photo.

Danner's are great boots we used them a lot in the military. But yes they need to be broke in. So I would wear wool socks and break them in on short walks for a while. They will loosen up after a bit. They make some great products for military boots for cleaning and care. They will last you for ever and you can get them re-soled at a cobbler shop.

I used the 24-70 and 70-200 GM lenses for years. But, they were big and heavy. So, I went to the 24-105 and 70-200 f4 lenses. They were fine but slow. So, I went to the 16-35 GM, 50 GM, and 70-200 f4. The weakest focal length on the 16-35 GM is 35mm. So, I tried not to use that focal length on that lens. I still have the 16-35 GM and the 100-400 GM. But, I also have all of the Sony GM primes from 14mm to 135mm and those are the lenses I use most often these days. Happy holidays!

I had a pair of Danners years ago and after the, yes very lengthy, break-in period they were great. Lasted for years.

Panasonic's 20-60mm "kit" lens is a perfect solution for everyday landscape photography,I think. Much wider than 24mm but you can still zoom a lilttle bit. It is sharp, light, relatively cheap and absolutely great for landscapes!

Most current boots aren't made with repairs in mind. That said it's possible to fix some issues (at least temporarily) yourself with a flexible glue design for used on boots. A professional can obviously fix more, but not everything. I certainly am interested in hearing about non-photo gear too as I guess most people interested in landscape photography struggle with the same problems when it comes to finding the best hiking gear. It'll be interesting to hear what boots you went for.

Dude....I went up Great Gable on the 21st December. It was proper clagg but we came out above the clouds. It was INSANE...I will be uploading a vlog on it soon!. The 24-70 GM is my go too lens, it's a fantastic piece of kit.

Merry Christmas 🎄... At this moment I only use: Zeiss Loxia 21mm f/.2.8; Sony Zeiss 35mm f/.2.8 and Sony 135mm GM in small bag with my Sony A7III..., I’m planning to buy a new Sony A7RIV A, to use my lenses in crop mode at 26mp with this camera!

I have found that my preference is for longer focal lengths... like 135mm or more. But. Since I do bring my camera for any party or event I get invited to (or any time I leave the house really) I quickly had to add wider lenses to my collection as nobody live in a home large enough to shoot with a 135mm. Now I have a 35mm prime that is not really wide enough either but which I stubbornly use anyway. These days we're not supposed to get too close to other people so... it works.
