A lap at Barber Motorsports Park in the 2AR-FE powered MR2 Spyder

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Video does not really show just how fun this thing is to drive, weighing 1995lbs and putting 205rwhp down it is shockingly nimble on the track. It is able to pull 1.2g's easily and even up to 1.3g's when the corners are taken just right.

How does that compare to when you ran the same engine in the AW11? Do you have any back to back figures on weights, G's or lap times?

Unfortunately i don't have any solid comparisons. I personally feel that the MKI has significantly worse suspension geometry which makes it go a fair bit slower, it also has a 200-300lb weight disadvantage. But to be fair, i also had much less track experience back then.

Are you using the stock ECU that came with the 2AR-FE? And the throttle by wire (TBW)? I was just wondering if the throttle response is quick and similar to a traditional cabled throttle. I have read that the Toyota TBW sometimes reacts slowly to throttle inputs.

Yes I'm using the stock ECU. I've spent a bunch of time tuning it to get it from the rated 188hp to about 235hp and i sell it on my store frankensteinmotorworks.com the drive by wire throttle body is very responsive, I'm not sure where this rumor keeps coming from. You aren't the only one to ever say it but it's never been true on this generation of Toyota ECUs and i also doubt it's true on previous generations. What i have seen on lots of modern cars is they don't want to kick down to a lower gear when paired with an automatic transmission for emission reasons and that makes it feel sluggish but that has nothing to do with the motor and everything to do with the transmission calibration.

Stock rev limit? I’m running mine with the 2AR-FXE pistons and it really woke it up.

I'm running my custom ECU tune on there that allows me to rev to 7200RPM and it has been dyno'd to 205rwhp. It is for sale here: frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/mr2-spyder-shop/2ar-fe-tuned-ecu-with-immobilizer-removed

on those pistons, i imagine they bumped up your compression ratio, do you have pictures and possibly measurements?

Looking good. 205 rwhp seems a bit low for the 2GR compared to previous power reports. Any explanation for the difference?

Nice, good catch. it's because it's a 2AR-FE. not a 2GR-FE (i fixed the title). The tune i sell for the 2GR-FE makes 290rwhp. The MKIII is much lighter and has a smaller engine bay so the swap kit i sell for it has a smaller engine that is a bit more appropriately sized for a fun time with this car.

@@FrankensteinMotorworks Thanks for the clarification. Any plans to offer swap kit for the 2AR into the mk1 MR2? I have an '85 with a tired 4AGE that could benefit.

@@bryankurtzublin8504 Sorry, I'm unlikely to develop parts for the MKI at this point, there's just not enough people left modifying these cars these days. That said, i've run a 2AR-FE with EB62 in the MKI before and it's a heck of a drivetrain for it.
