6 years. Sanji and Zoro were separated for 6 whole years in real life and yes it was quite the wait. Also, finally seeing Kaido's dragon form completely recontextualizes Kinemon's horror back in Punk Hazard at the realization Momo has become a dragon. One more thing. Generally speaking the amnesia trope I agree is lazy but with Big Mom it's established early on that she is prone to memory loss. In fact the genesis of her transformation from Lin Lin to Big Mom rests on the crux of her not even being aware she ate her mother figure while in a state of memory loss. To this day she mourns her not remembering what she had done. So I just look at the amnesia as an extension of an important part of her character.

Really funny that you like Holdem's design that much. Maybe you already read it in the SBS, but Holdem is the reason smile exist in One Piece. His design is a reference to a series Oda really liked as a child and he had to come up with a reason to draw it.

Man reading this arc back in the day was rough, im from nicaragua and we have an orochi of our own a small, petty, greedy, pervy old man for a president who has been so for close to 20 fucking years but things started reeeally getting bad at around 2018 when he started using the police to attack peaceful student protests and fucking incarcerating, disappearing and exiling people who oppose him and reading wano with its themes of silent long wishful hope for a better day and how much this people endure people and how some just give up on that hope and seeing what im seeing in my country represented in one piece hit so fucking hard

Watched about 10ish minutes of it before turning it off in order to watch every one of AJ's One Piece reviews from the beginning so I could see his reactions/interpretations evolve over time. While a little tone deaf, the Tamas ability works in an interesting way. She gets allies by feeding them... this kinda helps the message as well even tho is somewhat non consensual. She does mention however this ability doesnt last, and the animals can choose later if they wanna stay on her side or not, some do some dont

#AJPiece Congratulations on reaching Wano!! I wanted my first AJ piece comment to be something deeply personal to me, so here is my love letter to Jimbei. tw: depression, suicidal ideation Jimbei as a character has always been a favourite of mine since his introduction, but it was once I reached the post-war arc that he impacted me the most. When I was reading those chapters, I was in a very dark place emotionally, I was suicidal and had no hope for my future, but the way in which Jimbei supported Luffy through his darkest time, and his nature as a rock for Luffy to lean upon, helped me see the light in my own life. His line “I won’t let you go on hurting yourself”, while directed at Luffy, felt like he was speaking to me directly as the reader. This is just one moment of the hundreds, in which Jimbei has been a positive influence on my life, to him, and to Oda, I will always be grateful. (Sorry if this is a little convoluted, I sometimes struggle putting my feelings into words)

#AJPiece The oppression of Wano is one of the Oda’s finest works (let me explain). It could only be achieved in One Piece. The way Oda weaves world building into his story over time naturally is so masterful. Wano is what basically the entire post time skip has been leading up to, and it’s such a great encapsulation of what makes One Piece so special. This takes me back to the oppression of Wano, an epic tale told over hundreds of chapters and many years of real time. In Punk Hazard, we were introduced to the concept of SAD and Caesar’s machinations under Doflamingo’s command. Then in Dressrosa we learned about SMILE fruits but not the details of how they work. Zou gave us a glimpse into how Kaido and his gang do business - without mercy, willing to use a chemical weapon capable of devastating an entire population (which happened to be created by the same man who created SAD). Then when we finally get to Wano, we not only get introduced to Orochi and his tyranny, but the horrifying realization of what the SMILE fruits actually are crashed violently down upon us. The way the pieces of the puzzle all come together to form something so poignant is just immaculately done & the way the SMILE fruit reveal is so sickening - it’s only possible because of the layers and layers of lore that Oda organically fed us without shoving it down our throats with lore dumps. It makes for such a beautifully connected story, and it makes the buildup to Wano and the reveal of the tragedy of Wano that much more special. Oda really blew me away with Act 1 of Wano. I also really want to talk about the Oden flashback (peak fiction, GOATED character), but I probably shouldn’t make my comment any longer so. . . I am Oden… and I was born to boil! As always thanks for the content AJ!!!

Seeing Wano on your streams has given me so much more appriciation of it. Whilst I still think that the sheer number of plotlines Oda juggles might be too much for me to keep up with, I think it leads into some absolutely phenomenal stuff both now and later on in Wano. Oden's Flashback is one of my favourite flashbacks in any series, and the depths of how slimy and twisted Orochi, Kaido and *that* traitor's acts are is fantastic. Great stuff AJ!

#AJPiece I’ve been listening your vods on and off sinse Whole Cake and I have to give you many props. Many other manga reviewers in general are quick to jump to conclusions that are completely different than the author’s style, or what the author was setting up, but you seem to have a really good reading comprehension and finger on the pulse of what Oda is going for. Even small moments when you say “I don’t think I’m supposed to know what this is hinting at yet” and with me caught up and knowing the answer know that you were completely correct, while other creators are quick to start shooting in the dark. I didn’t watch your Naruto vods but your few Bleach ones so far have been the same way, so it seems like it’s not just Oda but you have a good understanding of what exactly a story is trying to say. Keep it up!

People give Big Mom a lot of shit for the amnesia mini arc, but I don't think they realize what it's like to have repressed memories after a highly traumatic event. My adopted daughter went through some horrid abuse from her mother that she has heavily repressed. She has suffered memory problems all her life because of it. There's times where she will wake up the next day and forget anywhere from 30 minutes to 2-3 hours of the night before going to sleep. If anyone we're to have amnesia in this story, Big Mom makes perfect sense as her trauma with mother caramel and the heavily repressed memory of all her friends "leaving" would absolutely make her memory fragile enough for this to happen. To be fair I also don't really like the amnesia story device in most stories, but I'm just trying to add a little nuance to the conversation. At the very least it makes more sense than Sabo's amnesia.

#AJPiece I’m glad you’re liking Kid! What fascinates me about him is the way he and Law relate to Luffy as heads of the Worst Generation. Law and Luffy share the Will of D, giving them this almost cosmic luck to be at the right place at the right time. However, Law lacks Luffy’s conquerors haki, represented in the way he is hesitant to take risks and lives his life in service of others (his crew, Corazón, etc). On the other hand, Luffy and Kid share a conquerors ambition, both throwing themselves at enemies well above their paygrade, but Kid lacks that Will of D luck. As a result he’s never in the right place or with the right people, resulting in betrayal and defeat. However, true to his devil fruit, he’s scrappy and continues to push ahead. Hopefully just as Luffy helped Law find his ambition, he will be able to put fate on Kid’s side.

Some plotpoints like the amnesia mentioned here just didnt really fit in with me. Some of the messaging (again, like mentioned here with Speed) is also a bit contradictory. Its alot of small things that were more noticeable to me than usual. I liked WCI weekly, never had these issues with that Arc. When it comes to bounties, I think rather than consider it a metric for power or relevance, it should be looked at from the perspective of who is giving them those bounties. The WG is simply assigning a reward for these pirates based on their /perceived/ evaluation of the threat or risks involved with that particular pirate. In sabaody, Shaky addressed this when she mentioned how Kid's bounty is higher than Luffy's because of Kid's propensity for causing civilian casualties and collateral damage, and we saw that despite Robin being only a child, her bounty was huge because of her ability to read poneglyphs. Just pointing it out as a reminder since sometimes bounties don't align with a character's strength directly. It's simply the level of "troublesome"-ness the World Gov considers someone

I think when we talk about Tama's power we have to see the nuances - I see plenty of critic about how it's conflicting with the idea of freeing people from opression and giving them their freedom back (which expecially is importatn in Wano). I think lots of people only see that she seems to be able to "control" others, therefore it's equal to opression. But I don't think we know the exact nature of her power. Is it giving the user complete power of control over them (thus leaving zero free will) or is it "just taming" them in a way. I think opression is a very malicious thing but in Tama's case, she does ask them to do things for her, but it's not a malicious kind of forcing someone do to something. It seems more like a taming kind of thing where they become friends/allies (although yes, it's by the power of her fruit) and Tama is not treating them like slaves or anything. I'm not trying to say that it's completely well done as I see that it still means that those under her power are not completely free and it's definitely very convenient for the plot. I just want to put it more into a more nuanced perspective as I've seen many kinda harsh critic over her power on the internet.

Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I try my best to give the story the benefit of the doubt, and I often at least attempt to find nuance, and I did that here. One piece is truly a modern epic on a scale that not many works of fiction have managed. And Oda has to write and draw it weekly, still he manages to connect so much and make us feel so much. To the question, do you think Oda will be able to finish the series in a satisfying way? Since we have seen long running series in the past, fail to get the ending right.

Everything from the aesthetics, to the clothing, culture and power structure, you can tell that he really wanted to express his love for his home country. It's a small detail but I love that the real life "Land of the Rising Sun" ends up inspiring the land where we witness both Momonosuke and Luffy bring the dawn of the world.

I like how AJ keeps calling Kyoshiro his true name as if the Denjiro reveal already happened by the end of chapter 958. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a bit befuddled about the actual reveal when it is treated as a surprise thinking it was already revealed. Fun Fact: I'm sure a chatter already mentioned this during the streams but I will say so anyway. The anime OP actually spoiled the manga readers as one of the openings for Wano had Kyoshiro next to the other nine samurai before this was actually revealed in the manga.

Without spoiling anything I'll just name drop Carrot as an example. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the arc as a whole when the time comes.

#AJPiece I think it’s fair to say wano is both the darkest and most hopeful one piece arc, in its lowest point it’s by far the darkest and most twisted, it gets darker and darker as the arc goes on until it hits what I believe to be the lowest point in the series, but like you keep saying, luffy represents the sun, and the sun will always rise. If I had to come up with a word for this arc it would be perseverance, we’ll see if you agree with me by the end, also I think it’s interesting to note how similar Kaido is to toguro from Yu Yu hakusho

This is a really good arc. I think part of people’s attitudes on Wano just has to do with it still being really recent by one piece standards, marketing keeping the setting at the forefront of people minds for the last few years. There’s so many legitimate criticisms like there are with every one piece arc, and of course some people will just always find certain settings and stories unappealing, but I’m glad you look like you are having a lot of fun with it. #AJPiece

#ajpiece i know that power scaling is not the main focus on this type of videos but i believed is very importan to take into consideration the prime geko moria. Even tho he lost to kaido on his fight, he managed to sustain 3 whole days (and when wano goes on you will see this was more crazy than imagine), imagine this power difference when luffy got 1 shot. I believe is important because the community downplay geko moria to be "week" but the reality, going back, is that he got so broken that he just let go (and even then, luffy required 200 souls plus the entire crew teamwork to beat him)

AJ is already at 1040's in the manga. But i will say this The flaws that this arc had is fake out deaths and also the one with Big Mom which is the amnesia plot thing in act 2 It would have been fine if Kinemon stays alive BUT what i don't understand is Kiku being alive as well. With Big Mom amnesia plot situation, that is just a bad writing from Oda. Some people might like that BUT it doesn't make sense. @Aleczandxr Absolute black hole of a character that had to be at the center of everything. This was often to the detriment of most other characters introduced in Wano. Sabo has similar problems whenever the Revolutionaries are a focus. He did make me appreciate Momonosuke and Kinemon more, so I guess that's a silver lining. The less said about Yamato, the better.

I’d love to hear the specific reasoning for that. I can’t think of a single character in the story that is made worse due to Oden and he stands on his own as a total and complete embodiment of the ideal many strive for while being distinct and different from Roger and incredibly human. He also helps elevate a handful of absolutely essential characters in a way that only he can. Kaido, Momo, the Scabbards, Luffy, etc are all without a doubt elevated due to his flashback.

I only somewhat recently got into One Piece, a few years ago maybe, and when I finally caught up to new chapters Wano was just starting… It feels like we had been in Wano FOREVER, but that’s probably just my perspective. … I am So glad we are out of Not-Japan Island. God I found the aesthetic so boring, especially compared to previous locations in the story. It was JUST Japan… Cool. I cared about so few of the new characters too. There were some hype moments to be sure! But they were quick moments between Hours of unimportant garbage. I am more excited about One Piece NOW than I have ever been before in my short time enjoying One Piece. It feels like the actual plot is finally happening, instead of some side-plot to liberate Japan. (Years and years of super interesting and unique islands… and then… what about one that is just Japan?? Everyone will love it! Samurai! Sumo-Wrestling! It’s just what I come to One Piece for!…) Sorry. I’ve been wanting to vent about this for a while now.

To me the most wack part about Wano was Luffy, not only paying attention, but CRYING about Oden's backstory. Actual OOC moment, I don't care he was friends with Roger and WB as an excuse to pique Luffy's interest (Since when Luffy needs a reason to help his friends and those he likes out). I can forgive a lot of things (and those are really bad) like the fakeouts death (and those who died without much fanfare), dropped plotlines, bloated cast, Oda making a check list OC Donut steel of what makes a character appealing to his readers in the less subtle manner (AoC, Mythical Zoan, massive udders + sideboob, etc…), Big Meme, Zunesha saying "cool", and the dippin, Carrot (Lmao), The joyboy connection was obvious, and so was the fact the Gum fruit works strange even among Paramecias, the nika part IS a retcon, Pluton got glossed over so later in theWar it can appear out of nowhere to save the day when the gang is in a pinch, Greenbull talks and acts like a parody character, Shanks out of nowhere to shill Film Red. But yeah no, Luffy actually bothering to listen, is what instantly took me out. I never expected him to try THIS hard to make like a character (See?!! Luffy likes him, he thinks he's so cool, you should too!), and he did it twice in the span in off one arc, THE PAYOFF arc. Bravo Oda, what a man you are. (And then you hear people say this ranks above the best Pre-TS has to offer and it's "Peak", all in all it's act 3 dragging it down, sarcasm aside, it's a fine arc not the end of the world, nor it's best).

@@AleczandxrOh, yes, and a last thing, do you remember how in your reviews you pointed out that people made some of arcs look worse than the actually were? (Jaya-Skypiea, Thriller Bark, FMI, PH, Zou), For petulant reasons as not being "hype" enough; bloated cast, unnecessarily streched, intelligible panels, crowd reactions, being a setup arc, or Oda no spilling every mystery to the readers. These same people are the ones that now praise Wano to the high heavens as it had no flaws, I did not fall in any of those pitfalls. Since Zou builds tension for Wano, moreso that PH & Dressrosa; "it wasn't that bad in hindsight", "It dropped some nice tidbits of Lore", "I don't understand how people call it boring", "Underrated character moments". For those people Wano is perfect, "There is No War in Ba Sing Se" style. Now that the discourse changed, well... You don't to be seen as hater right? Don't you trust GODA to deliver? What? You don't believe Oda perfectly planned everything from far as Skypiea? You're just a Hater, most likely a Naru/HxH/DBS/Bleachtard that is jealous tha OP never did those shitty shonen tropes that sank those series. Well free to drop it... No wait! let me tell you to fuck off, otherwise I wouldn't feel righteous defending OP and GODA's honor. You what? Fuck it and really really sorry about it, another wall of MUCHISIMO TEXTO. God forbid you don't like something about Wano, after all it's everything One piece is about, not those boring emotional moments and "themes" that appeal to youtube essayists and highbrow people up their ass. It always has been a silly manga about beating up stronger foes, death battle match-ups and gags (PEAK COMEDY). Not adventure mind you, it never took itself seriously, don't you remember those GOATED PEAK FICTION moments when **** asked Nami why was she crying about her freedom or something, or her mom idk and went up to low-diff the Arlong pirates, or when he told Robin to laugh "Say you to laugh!!! Nya-hahaha!" Or when chopper became a marketable plushie, Robin doesn't seem as worldy as she once did, Zoro is just the designated hypetool, Sanji is just Sanji (Was like this since Baratie btw), Brook is nowhere near as suave and "knightly", it's just "show panties please" and the occasional skull joke (What happened to 45°) And best of all. Go D. Ussopp doesn't need to be courageous like in his fight against Mr. 4 and Miss MXmas, the gang just needs to reach Elbaf, get his well deserved powerup, and then he will be relevant and act like it again T R U S T. All he needs to do is react in shock to everything and run away until then. Franky is still good as ever, I'll give Oda props for that, Franky always lightens the mood. It NEVER had something interesting to say about history, dreams, people and their relationships, it's just GOATDA imitating and eventually surpassing Toriyama, after all G* beats Goku effortlessly right? "It will break the Internet" It's just hype man not the journey, get hyped for hype's sake, get your tatoos, AMV's, merchandise, and petty fights about other mangas and don't sweat about the small details, GODA will keep cooking more hype. The only thing I'm glad is that you review every arc fairly, and don't bandwagon with the rest of the patients in the psychiatric ward that is the OP fandom, which I'm sadly part of, it's hard to avoid the brain rot. Looking forward for the next part of Wano, cheers.

@grimmumbra2600 (Spoilers till ch 1081) How does him being there not make any sense? Shanks literally says he was there to stop blackbeard, because he had a feeling blackbeard would do something in the aftermath of Wano. (Which Blackbeard did btw, He went to the Island closest to Wano and beat the shit outa Law, he also has a history of doing shit like that, i.e. marineford, impel down) so the suspicion was totally justified. Also Shanks appearing at the aftermath of a war has litterally happend before already (marineford). We know Shanks has a history with Blackbeard since Jaya arc, and in Marineford he arrived after Blackbeard just took the quake fruit. So it makes sense he'd wanna be there early this time around, to stop Blackbeard (or anybody) from pulling some sneaky shit. In this case Greenbull.

@@Aleczandxr Most of the plotlines were poorly handled either rushed or took more time than it needs. Act 1 was good all around (with some slips in the plotlines like wano sexism) but the acts after it were bad (Odon prison was set to break luffy's conviction, but little we saw about that. And all of it was a competition between luffy and kid, the end of it wasn't emotionally striking because luffy didn't face much hardship compared to other prisoners, big mom's amnesia that plot was ass not mentioning how she was handled the entirety of the arc and her crew, how oda didn't complete zoro's lineage plotline, although I believe he would mention it later when we get back to wano, but basically Zoro didn't do much other than cool fights although wano was supposed to be his arc) (I don't have a problem with odin's flashback, but would like to mention how Oda forgot about miss shyarly future sight ability, things you wouldn't notice unless you rewatch one piece) (And finally, the dread of onigashina raid. I felt drained after this shit of an act. A lot of characters with no connection to and a lot of plotlines that made up this mish-mash network of events. The few highs doesn't justify the lows. Characters who were brought and did little to nothing especially Marco. Orochi and Kanjuro fake deaths that felt like tom and jerry chase sequence. How little the strawhats have done in this arc and other characters were given a lot of screentime. Carrot plotline that made me feel like Pedro died for nothing. Tama's mind control ability that gave the samurai a hand in the battle which contradicts the story's main messages of freedom and free will. Ashura died from a bomb and Ezo died from shigan while Kiku just lost her arm and Kinemon took a baguwa from Kaidou to his head and stayed alive with a bs reason making Kaidou look weak. The Bullshit power ups and huge leaps in power and Awakenings all on the hero's side while Kaidou and Bigmom are held like puppets by Oda. I liked the concept of G5 but the way it was written in the story fucked it up to the point that I see the jorousei like incompetent clowns. And the bountys assigned to luffy, kid and law puts BB bounty after breaking into imple down and being a cause of the jailbreak, and causing the war, and killing WB and taking his fruit into question. And finally Hiyouri's controversy) And these are not all the points just the main ones. The failing of all expectations and 20 years of build up (pre and post time skip) also makes things worse. It's like when the smart kid fails the exam. Wano is the worst arc in one piece.

Bigmom's flashback was alot better. And how king's lunarian lineage was brought up fast and then Zoro took him out. And Ryukogyu killed him "I guess". Adding to Ryukogyu weak introduction compared to other admirals. And shanks came to wano and left real fast like "hey I'm here and now am gone" the same for zonisha. And Yamato which came out of no where and here character build up and multiple flashbacks which feels like Oda is trying hard to make him compelling (he's just a huge tomboy with big boobs cosplaying as Odin).
