A Lady Of Letters With Patricia Routledge Part 1
Ойын-сауық
If you've ever wondered how Roy Clarke created ''Hyacinth Bucket'' in ''Keeping Up Appearances'' you should check this out. Here Patricia Routledge gives an outstanding performance as Irene Ruddock, a snobbish single woman that complains and writes non-stop letters to people about how she thinks things should be. Her obbsession with writing letters eventually lands her in prison. You can definitely see the character Hyacinth forming in this. This is like an early rehearsal of Hyacinth.
This is an Alan Bennett Talking Heads Monologue which was recorded in 1987 especially for TV. I find it amazing how she can memorise every word. She is truly the greatest actress.
I also know how extremely rare this is to find in shops, so I'm more than happy to share this with the rest of the world. I think we all enjoy Patricia Routledge on our televisions which is why I wish she would return to comedy and put theatre on hold for a bit. Enjoy!

I'll watch anything with Patricia Routledge in it. What a unique human being. Also there could never be another Alan Bennett. Genius.

GENIUS. I have watched this more than once. Still as great 2nd time as 1st.
A masterclass in acting Ms Routledge
It's the learning of scripts like this that always amazes me. Patricia makes us believe she's making it up as she goes along.

Ms. Patricia Routledge is an outstanding actress. It is a sheer pleasure to see her and to listen to her.
As a wannabe writer, Alan Bennett's work with these monologues is possibly the sort of thing I'd most like to emulate. It's the ability to make the most ordinary, mundane stories become something universal and beautiful and insightful. Alan Bennett and the Canadian writer Carol Shields, these are my two great heroes.
The talent Patricia has with her speaking and singing voice is nothing short of remarkable. Truly remarkable.
This lady is remarkable! A superior actress in all regards. I could listen to her read the dictionary!
I watched this once on tv years ago. Never forgot it. I can't believe its here and posted! Thank you.
I find Miss Routledge a very magnetic actress, (actor), whichever one prefers. So full and rich, she is.
Brilliant. Thank you.
Glad this is on youtube. Wish I could find all the Talking Heads programs. She is a great actress and Bennett is a great playwright. I saw this years ago; glad to see it again,
An acting tour de force.
The alan bennett monologues are just heart breaking tragedies. We see the emptiness in the character's lives that the character themselves does not see.
Thank you for this. Such a wonderful performer.
Patricia Routledge is immaculate, and Alan Bennett is a genius. The "Talking Heads" series is a collection of masterpieces; each one takes a very ordinary life and shows the pathos, courage, pettiness and quiet nobility in each subject. I realize that Mr. Bennett has a particular insight into women, but I wish that he had written episodes that were centered around men which, using his particularly keen power of observation, would round out this series as a masterpiece of insight into the human condition.
I love this monologue
I love anything by Alan Bennett.hes a genius .thank you
I came to this having seen the 2020 version with Imelda Staunton. Both brilliant representations.
Alec Bennett has captured the people living outside the neighborhood and lives by the window..lonely, left out. What ever happened to neighbors or the lonely people in quiet loneliness, going over or coming over for a quick check or getting acquainted I find I am becoming a secluded one. dang.
I just Love this woman shes the best...love everything she does.
i am very grateful for this upload
An amazing actress and I enjoy any part she plays.
Thank You! I was brought here by another fan of Patricia, and Jeremy Brett...etc
A masterclass in acting
Fabulous actress
so much more nuanced than Hyacinth, a real character with great depth performed by stand out actress
Using this as the play for my English Lit A level, can't find the script so thanks so much for this video, saved my life lol!
This is a more aggressive version of the character she played in "A Woman of no importance". This character thinks a great deal more of herself.
Birkenhead's finest. The accent is all wollyback with a touch of West Yorkshire, obviously. Best of British in any case.
AWESOME....
Great.. thanks for sharing
I saw this yesterday, so wonderful
This was great! Mrs. Bucket seemed to use the phone more, instead of writing letters. She'd ring up and complain, the dust bin collectors supervisor and the Chinese Ambassador, to name a few.

Oh pu-lease: Not "Bucket", it's "Bouquet", obviously ;-)
No one could do it better then her. She makes it seem a easy as breathing. Bavo
awesome, thanks!
thank you for posting
Alan Bennett, along with Victoria Wood are two of The North's finest contributors to the genre 'observational humour'.And like Ms Wood,Bennett has that canny knack of picking exactly the right performers for his work. But someone commented here that he/she wished Routledge had recreated the role for "Ladies of Letters" replacing Anne Reid.I don't think Bennet wrote that series.I watched an episode yesterday & it was written by two females.Though of course I could be wrong.
Just EXTRA-ordinary she/Routledge is, as is AB’s whole series - an almost-improper abundance of GLORIOUS acting (made to look SO easy)... Enough said. Enjoy!
She could recite the phone book and keep your attention.
Victoria Wood's "Kitty" sketches featuring Patricia Routledge are much, much closer to Hyacinth Bucket, and popped up three years earlier than this
Amazing
thank you so much for sharing

I so enjoy watching these and really almost anything in both drama and comedy even horror from the other side of the world UK, British Austrian... English
Great that you posted this on you tube, its an excellent monologue, so thanks. You can purchase both 'Talking Heads' dvd's online. The second series includes another excellent Patricia Routledge monologue, where she plays a spinster involved in a rather interesting relationship with a chiropodist. Have to disagree about the Hyacinth Bucket inspiration. Search for Victoria Wood's 'Kitty' character and I believe you will notice a closer resemblance.
Thank you~~~!
Oh yes. This is how people trolled back in the mid 80's.
Yes, thanks for sharing. Quite the show off she is
With respect the only similarity between Miss Ruddock and Mrs Bucket is the actress who played both roles... Her inflections and timbre are the same, the characterisations however are as chalk and cheese

@Caprile91 What the hell are you talking about? Patricia Routledge is still alive, she's not dead. She's 81 years old and she ain't planning on slowing down anytime soon.
I LOVE PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE IN ANYTHING SHE DOES. I WISH SHE HAD REPRISED HER ROLE OF VERA IN THE TV SERIES OF LADIES OF LETTERS. MUCH AS I LOVE ANNE REID, HAVING LISTENED TO THE AUDIO TAPES, I JUST CAN'T GET USED TO HER PLAYING VERA IN THE TV SERIES.
we were reading this in english thanks for uploading i missed the lesson they watched it x
Adam, she would have read the story by Alan Bennett and then remembered the lines.
This starts off understandable, complaining for smoking at a time of grief, then develops into ridiculous harassment.
Very cute...
We had to watch this in English, it was hell

lucky you, for us it was only Shakespeare and in spades...
Some of his characters can he hard to study, depending on their facial expression and voice tone. I.e. Soldiering on with Stephanie Cole.
Have to do an English assesment on this tommorow.
Yes, definitely Hyacinth here, doing her bit for society! You're right. Makes me wonder if Hyacinth's mother might have been like this!
@BellButtonVideos I would like to know too for my english coursework
I,d say she did not have enough to occupy a sad and lonely existence, there are people like her out there today, they need help to be honest, attention if you will, they bring the wrong sort though.
@chiteach2 any specific reason?
Te doresc mult. Niko armasaru
we had to do this for gcse english
@n64wiigirl The person I replyed to that removed their comment said that Patricia Routledge passed away and i'm like ''what?'' (Just incase you're wondering why it looked like I was talking to myself) hehe
She complains that he didn't reply back to her on a letter where she said that he didn't have to reply to her other letter. Talking about a nuisance cause.
Is this based on someone they should have had her friend there who chimes in but is rarely on camera.its a nervous condition or compunction to write letters and go on about a subject or many subjects at once.
@foreverashcroft *portrays
You recorded this from the TV screen then uploaded it to KZread. Are you okay?

It was recorded a very long time ago, had it been uploaded today, i'd uploaded it a lot clearer. Yes i'm okay, are you okay?
Hyacinth had a ‘nicer’ personality. Yes she was a snob but generally a overall nicer demeanour than this woman who is just out and out sour.
Yoga go beginners
lonely lady
You wonder how she manages to afford living alone, since there's no mention of her working.

You can defintley hear Hyacinth in this, it's funny
this woman is fucking jokes
This sucks. No action sequences. No gunfights. No sex scenes. Might be nice to see Pat Routledge shed a few clothes.
Is this a serious video?

In a word yes.
With respect, being a great actress is not about memorising words. Acting is interpretation not a Memory Man Act.
