lol. that's pretty funny. awhile back, I took almost an entire roll of electrical tape and tried to cushion every single place where my bags rattled again the racks--it didn't really make much difference. It's funny how, when you're in such silence, those sounds can become super loud! :) I agree with you though. My grandparents lived right next to some train tracks and that sound would put me to sleep at night when I visited.

Hi Bryan, I've watched many of your rides but still have several to watch. This one was a great ride since it was celebrating your retirement. I've been retired for almost 3 years now. Sold my business and realized shortly thereafter that life is going to be different. Not sure if was going to be a "good different" or "bad different" but it was going to be different. I'm happy to say it was a good different. First year I was lost. Not sure what I should be doing but now enjoying life, just like you are. Keep on riding and exploring.

My husband and I finished the entire trail on August 18th. We’re in the last couple weeks of a three month road trip with our car and bikes. It has been the most astonishing summer. Thanks for the great video.

That’s so funny you mentioned this. I just yesterday finished the Mickelson Trail (South Dakota) and today was thinking this very thing: how could we bring together people to gather for a group ride, have fun, etc. The inspiration for this was learning (while visiting the town of Deadwood) about the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. Seems like crazy fun. Stay posted. Maybe we could make this happen together.

You have hit the KATY Trail food dessert. Hartsburg in the 90s had a B&B, a full service restaurant and even a bicycle shop (now moved to Jefferson City, and several bars. On my trip in the 90s, between Jefferson City and Hermann there was no food or water (it was in the mid 90s on our Jeff City to Hermann day) . The trail guide showed several places to get water, but they were all closed. So, we ran out of water about halfway between Jeff City and Herman. Also, no food after the Tebbetts, a store owned by a 90+ year old woman. Al least there is water on the trail at the trail heads now. So, things are better in some ways but worse in others. I was looking at the last KATY Trail Guidebook (out of print) from 2013 and many of the places are GONE, mostly restaurants and businesses that catered to the trail traffic. Sorry you experienced some of the same problems we had in the 90s on the trail. I thought it might be better now.

Wow. Interesting perspective from years past. I would guess it’s hard to keep a seasonal business going. Yeah…seems like some long gaps. And yeah, that guide is a bit misleading in some places. Don’t get me wrong: I still had a total blast. It’s such a great trail. It’s an experience I continue to daydream about.

I've watched so many cycling videos. None are more entertaining than yours. Thanks for sharing and keeping it real. The colorful commentary and the deep trail thoughts are priceless. The mind, keeping itself entertained!

Thanks, Greg. I appreciate the kind words. I find it really funny how and where the brain goes during these long stretches. Creativity, absurdity, sometimes really deep and other times so ridiculously shallow. I think it was the second day, at one point I was contemplating how to unite people around a sense of “common good” and moments later I was thinking about how I’d like to go back and watch more Gilligan’s Island. The brain is amazing. 😂

Glad you like them! Yeah, Wisconsin is on my list. So many trails and now I have almost unlimited time which makes it harder to choose! If you had to choose just one trail in Wisconsin what would it be? The Katy is one I’d like to return to. Probably one of the most relaxing routes I’ve ever ridden. Could have been partially my state of mind at the time but the scenery was wonderful. Btw, Bill Berg is one of my favorite jazz drummers (Flim and the BBs) 😊 sorry…it’s the first thing I thought when I saw your name.

Great trail video. The KATY Roundhouse campground in New Franklin has hot showers. It is probably the nicest campground right on the trail. But as I said it has a great hot shower. I stayed at Cooper's Landing years back and it had no showers then, at least the one was not working. And the attack goose kept us up all night. Cooper's Landing is much bigger in 2023 than in 1995. There was parking for only a few cars and a few camping spots and no food. But we were able to buy a can of Pork and Beans for two of us from the owner for $3.00. Either that or starve.

Thanks for the tips. You’re the second person to mention New Franklin. I’ll have to look into that next time. Wow, I can’t imagine Coopers Landing being smaller!!! I guess they normally have food trucks but they were not there the night i was there so, like you, I ate snacks from their general store. Their beer/wine selection was pretty impressive. Great video, it was so good I watched it all in one sitting (except for potty breaks 😎). Always had this on my wish list. Now it’s a definite do in the coming year and will have to stay in the hotel in Hermann. Thinking about doing a PBV charter for the Katy. Saw your RAGBRAI videos first. I also did RAGBRAI this year, also did it in 2021, both years were really hot.

Absolutely. I’d stay completely clear of that highway if I had it to do again. Btw, your name is awesome-one of the greatest long distance runners in history. I ran about a half mile with him about 20 years ago at the marathon in San Diego. A definitely highlight of my life.

By far in my opinion one of you better videos. They are all good, but this one was extra enjoyable. I got a kick out of sometimes on the trail and when your crossing wooden bridges, your bike sounds like a little train with the clickety clacks. Thanks Bryan!

lol. My question is why "those birds" fly so erratically...like bats almost. It reminded me of the Austin bridge bats...all over the place.

Enjoyed the video! Beautiful scenery. I hate to be that guy…but if you want that helmet to actually protect your head, you might want to tighten the chin strap. It should be snug against your jaw with only enough slack to fit your index finger in there. Also, you might want to invest in a helmet with more modern protection like MIPS. That technology helps prevent the helmet from twisting your neck and potentially breaking it in an accident. Anyway, thanks for sharing and look forward to the next one!

Thank you! Good for you on the Katy trail. Yeah, that was a great ride. I didn’t really know what to expect but I thought Missouri was beautiful and full of that midwestern friendliness. That’s definitely a trail I’d like to get back to some day. Side note: I’m originally from Ohio and a friend there pointed out that many native Ohioans fail to pronounce the second “O” so we’ve got our own “controversy”. 😊 Again, thanks for watching!

I also currently live in Delaware (southern), but I am from Iowa. Casey's Pizza is my favorite and is a must have when I go home to visit. I appreciate the adventures you share.

Another excellent vid from Bryan!! I just returned from a major trip from CT to IA,IL,WI,OH,PA,MI, NY and MA to ride a bunch of rail trails on my new gravel bike. There were many instances I thought of you- one which I passed a statute of a man sitting on a bench, I almost, almost, waved at him...chuckled to myself "Oh, Bryan would have definitely waved". Some thoughts: while in Iowa, there were, let's just say at RAGBRAI you should have GNAT SNACKS!! Holy moly!! I loved Iowa! My favorite trail was The Great Miami Trail in Ohio and then I also loved the Illinois Prairie Trail and the Fox River trail in IL. Anyway, this video was so much fun!! Keep em coming and the longer the video, the better...

I grew up in Cincinnati and I only wish these trails would have been around back then. It’s really amazing to look at the trail network between Cincy, Dayton, Columbus. Nice ride. I've ridden the Katy Trail several times and hope to do it again soon. I may try the Rock Island spur from Kansas City as you suggested. I also need to ride the section from St. Charles to Machens, which I haven't done before. Maybe I'll get to say hi to that dog. I lived several years back in the 70s in Missouri and that's how I pronounce it, but like you a lot of the natives I encountered say Missourah.

We rode in early April 2019, before the floods came. 29:44 we sat at that same table at the cafe in Boonville. Definitely recommend it. On a later visit by car, we parked at that campground in Portland so we could ride to Hermann. We marveled that anyone would camp there. I guess you had the same feeling. :) My first bike was some sort of off brand that my dad eventually put motocross bars on. It was cool enough, but then I got a Huffy motocross bike that must have weighed 50 pounds. I loved being out on those bikes. That was the beginning. I expect to retire soon, so I will be watching more of your videos so you can show me how it's done.

Congratulations on your retirement and welcome to the club. I always tell my friends who are working past retirement age that they are missing out on one of the great joys of getting older, the freedom to make every day into whatever you want it to be. You can't do that from behind a desk. I have been retired for almost 3 years now and I haven't regretted the decision once in all that time. 100% agree! None of us knows how much sand is in our hourglass. I no longer look out the window on a gorgeous day and wish I could be outside riding my bike instead of attending meetings, answering emails, drafting budgets, etc…

In Michigan, we have the White Pine Trail. It's 93 miles long, so not nearly as long as the Katy, but I've used it a few times to get to the Mackinaw Bridge. You rolling through some of those towns talking to people and looking for things like a place to eat reminds me a lot of that. Sometimes you get up in the morning and just don't feel like cooking and just want to get rolling. It's a flip of a coin whether or not the next town on the map will have something worth stopping for to get something to eat. Having done that a few times now I've just had to tell myself that I'm going to have to make myself something to eat before I leave. I used to go to Arkansas a lot for work for a previous employer. They did not like it when I would call their state R-Kans-ass. Also.... Schwinn Pixie Schwinn Stingray Jr. Schwinn Predator Schwinn World (still have this, bought brand new for my 13th birthday) Specialized Hardrock Specialized Rockhopper (still have this) Sage Storm King (mid-life crisis bike, my favorite)

I remember riding a 20 inch banana seat bike when I was a kid and the Sears bike like you had and the Huffy bile. I delivered papers with it before going to school, in the winter also. I delivered GRIT and The Post Star papers in Up state N.Y.

We watched your Ragbrai video and really enjoyed it (we were there). We then watched this video and realized we were on the Katy at the same time. Saw a couple things, such as the Voyager's Van and the large boat, and the dead armadillo! (Week of May 22nd). Had fun seeing if you got us on video but didn't see us.

@@RideAlongAdventures We were in the St. Louis Metro area going to a High School Graduation. (At the Family Arena, which was on your video) Just did a couple out and back rides out of Marthasville and Treloar. We did the whole Katy about 10 years ago and want to do it again. Yes, the weather was great, we had some friends do Katy in August. Don't do that as it is super hot in Missouri that time of year and water is not readily available. We've done the C&O, GAP, and Pine Creek trail. We'll watch those and see if we recognize anything.

I really enjoyed the ride.

This has been a very awesome video to watch. I live in St. Charles, MO. You didn't mention any of the history of St. Charles. It's the first capital of the state Lewis & Clark wintered here. The train stop in St. Charles has a park on the backside if it and there are all shirts of signs and statutes dedicated to them. I'm just saying it might be worth your time to stop here next time. Good luck and I'll be watching more of your videos from my living room. My riding is limited to my Stationary Bike. Thanks for the Katy.

You've done a lot more trips than me, but I did do 9 or 10 days and mainly washed myself out of a sink or with a gallon of water. (you can cut the top off of a gallon jug and it makes a halfway decent sink lol)

Just watched your video on the Katy Trail. Fantastic. We live about an hour south of there and have done most of the trail. I would suggest coming back in the fall when the trees have change colors. Last month we went out to Glacier National Park and rode our bikes up "the road to the sun" to the summit. It's a small window of about two weeks where they close the roads only to hikers and bikers. I would definitely put that on your riding bucket list. We have a few bike ride adventures on our KZread channel. "Foto Pod Adventures". We will also be doing Ragbrai this year. This will be our fifth time. Thanks again and ride safe.

Thanks so much for the tips and recommendations. I subscribed to your channel. Enjoyed a few of your videos and will watch more later. I was particularly interested in your video/experience in Badlands. So many people tell me I need to go ride there. I’m really looking forward to RAGBRAI although I have no clue what to expect. Hey, thanks. No gimbal. Just mounted to my handlebars with the stabilization turned on.

That was a great video Bryan, enjoyed it through and through. Had me laughing so hard at times. That truly is a beautiful part of the country. Glad you went to the Katy, and had a great time. My first bike was Frankenstein bike the bike shop put together from all different bikes, had a schwin frame though.

No name brand. it was green and I somehow got some drop down handlebars. I think it was a single-speed but, for me, it was Tour de France ready. @Ride Along Adventures Bryan, bring the karaoke machine! Lol. Mine was a green stingray frame with a white banana seat a 20". I build all my bikes, so I guess all mine are "Frankenstein" models. Lol BAM sounds interesting, I'm going to look that up. Pine Creek .....lookout here we come...

What color?

I spent several years working in the wilds of the Ozarks and most of the older residents said Missourah and also used phrases like "We uns" and will you carry me over to the next town in your car? Shockingly being from Indiana I discovered that in the Ozarks "Hoosier" is a perjorative term, I suspect from a bygone era when there might have been a mass migration from Indiana to Missourah.

Some are free (Clinton Community Center, Pilot Grove city park, etc.) but for others, rates change. Please refer to bikekatytrail.com for the latest. One small tip: the rates are directly related to the convenience of other stuff like availability of food and places to shower.

It’s a fair question. They are totally different trails. I mean…I like cake and I like ice cream. Sometimes, I prefer a flan (hat’s off to you if you get that reference). They are all great desserts. For me, my favorite trail is the last one I did. 😂 which was the Erie Canal. But then you bring up the GAP C&O and I start thinking, ‘man, I miss that trail’. It’s hard to compare. I guess if you twisted my arm between the two, I’d lean to the GAP C&O for the natural beauty, the hills, the canal, the history. But I really enjoy the Katy too.

So you’re the one! Haha. Yeah, I’ve done it both ways. Do love the Cumberland downhill, but prefer 120 miles of gradual descent. Plus, as you slow climb, you get to take in more of the views!

Congratz! the views on the trail look really nice! It's what I hate about riding on roadways in the US. No shoulder/broken up shoulders, those damned rumble textures (which I would appreciate as a divider to a wide shoulder/bikepath) What tires are you running on your touring bike? Would you go thinner or wider for the trail? tread? how did they perform on more coarse sections?

Thanks. You know, this is a topic I really don’t know much about. I started with 38s that came with the bike. Moved to 40s and just now to 43s. (45 is the max for my bike). I don’t know…I guess the increase has made for a smoother ride overall. The Katy is so well groomed I’m not really sure what is truly needed. Yeah, when I do hit coarse areas, I’m happy to just plough through with big tires. Seems like a lot of adventure/gravel bikes come with 40s but I think that is a trade off for road riding. Is that confusing enough? 😊 I agree with you about rumble strips…my gosh, why not put it on the OTHER side of the white line???? Why not alert a driver that they are about to cross the line, not that you’re already across???????!!!!!! That was nerve wracking with like 3” of space.

@@RideAlongAdventures You got it perfect bud! Rather than repeat industry tech speak, It's great to hear from a person that experienced it firsthand. On wider tires, usually higher casing thread count (pricier) will make wider tires roll better on hardtop. Would be nice if someone had heavy duty spigots on the trail for water and a quick wash up too. Cheers and thanks!

Try the fox river trail it goes from green bay to Hilbert its about 40 miles. Also try great sauk trail in sauk city wisconsin. Those 2 are great starters

Minnesota has some great rail trails….Central lakes,Mesabi, Paul Bunyan are nice long trails…check em out and thanks for video…We are doing the Katy this Fall🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️

I almost didn’t watch this video because of the length, but I took a chance, and I’m SO GLAD I did! This video was so much more entertaining than I expected! I biked the Katy Trail solo in May 2022 and had a great time. Lots of turtles and snakes, a few dead armadillos, and tons of friendly people. Talk about great people… I stayed at a B&B in Hartsburg, and when the host found out my plans for the day, she packed a peanut butter sandwich and a couple of boiled eggs for me, because she knew there were no food options on that day’s journey. She saved my life! When I got to Portland, I was out of water, and there wasn’t any water at the trailhead. I glanced up the hill and saw a bar and grill next to the River’s Edge Campground, so I headed up to see if I could get water. I no sooner put my empty bottles on the bar, and the bar tender was filling them with ice and water! It was very hot that day, so I lingered a bit to enjoy the air conditioning and an icy beverage. I struck up a conversation with the gentleman next to me and noticed an ice cream freezer in the corner. Since my bike is partially fueled by ice cream, I enjoyed an ice cream sandwich before heading out. When it came time to settle the bill, the bartender told me it had already been taken care of. The gentleman with whom I’d been conversing had paid my tab! What a sweet gesture! It was one of the most memorable events of that trip. I was seeking water in another small town, again, no water at the trailhead. It was mid-morning, and the single bar and grill as not yet open. I knocked on the back door, and a young man answered and said they weren’t open yet. When I explained that I was looking for water, he took my water bottles and filled them. The people were fantastic! I’m heading back to the Katy in September, and this time I’m focusing on the spurs to Columbia, Jefferson City, Hermann, and Washington. It should be a great adventure!

Great stories!!! Love it. Yeah, there seems to be a friendliness in the Midwest that is hard to find in other areas. I’d never been to MO prior to this and I really enjoyed it and the people. With regards to the video length, I really don’t know what to do. I did a few videos where I split the trip into individual days but then nobody watched the other days so I just put it all into one video. I’m open to suggestions if you’ve got them. Thanks for watching regardless. I appreciate it.

@@RideAlongAdventures I wouldn’t change a thing about this video. I loved the singing, the commentary, the random trivia, and the BICUS analysis. I subscribed to the channel based on this one video! It was epic! I felt like I was reliving my Katy solo ride (although I’m too spoiled to camp). A couple other of your videos popped up in my feed (Florida and the Pine Creek Trail, which I’ve ridden as well), but I didn’t find them nearly as entertaining as the Katy video, because they just didn’t contain the colorful commentary and random trivia.

It’s a secret. 🤫 Actually, it’s a Insta360 camera extended out in front. It’s pretty cool because it edits out the stick so it looks like a drone. But don’t tell anybody.

The real mystery of Meriwether Lewis is the circumstances of his death at an Inn on the Natchez Trace. Nobody can be certain that it was suicide or murder.

So true. I read he suffered from “dark spells” and had even attempted suicide on the Expedition. Sad either way. He was a gifted dude who had the absolute respect of many. That’s a trail I really want to ride in ‘24.

Great video thanks so much, I’m definitely thinking about doing the Katy Trail now based on your video. As for Ragbrai, I’ve done it six times I’ve enjoyed everyone of them. I think you’ll find Iowa and the wonderful people there and the towns you will travel through every bit as friendly, and as welcoming as you did the people you met along the Katy Trail. Don’t think Iowa is flat, flat it is NOT and get used to being on the road with 18,000 of your closest friends. It is an experience that every cyclist should do at least once.

Thank you. I’m really looking for to Iowa. A few years ago our company acquired a manufacturing site in Iowa and the first thing that hit me was just how friendly the workers were. Like genuinely kind and gracious. As I said at the end, I’ve been guilty of “flyover syndrome” for so many years. Need to get back down to earth!!

Great video, Bryan. You really spend the time to make it entertaining.😂 You seemed to have caught the spring in mid flight. The first day looked like early spring and within just a couple of days it looked like late spring. I think the periodic rain was a blessing, as it kept the temps down for you. That alone can make or break a ride. The scenery was a real mixture... from flat and less interesting to rolling hills and beautiful scapes. The trestle bridges were really nice... shades of other such trails. You know why that dog keeps coming out to greet people? Attention... he gets the attention he otherwise misses. Smart dog!😅 As far as future rides go, consider Michigan's upper peninsula along the shore of Lake Superior during the summer, as this might not be as warm as further south. But you will likely be on the road rather than a dedicated trail. Research the situation with bugs in the summer. Along the Great Lakes isn't bad but places like Minnesota with tons of lakes can be really bad. Just a thought... Maybe they have some dedicated bike trails up there as well. It may be that you go out to travel by your vehicle and park it for a few days as you do an out and back. Then travel by vehicle to another destination and do the same thing... picking the places you want to bike. Gord

Thanks, Gord. I appreciate the feedback. Yeah, you know I never actually thought of using the car as a way to just get around to other trails. Silly me. I'm contemplating doing a US-wide trip and just driving coast to coast and hitting trails along the way. I mean I really do want to ride it one day but it was just so easy to coordinate with a car. And, as you saw, in a pinch, it was an easy night's stay a well. Thanks for the recommendations on Michigan. I was just watching a video from a guy who traveled around the entire coast line. I vacationed up near Petosky one time and it was incredibly beautiful. So many places...except now I have the time! :) Oh one more comment: yeah, it really greened up in Delaware the week I was gone. I noticed a lot of the video was very light greens even browns. It's that time of year. Overall, i was really struck by how beautiful Missouri is.

@@RideAlongAdventures Yeah... a trip cost to cost north and then back around south... hitting as many trails as possible along the way... sounds like a great idea. How do you generally handle parking your vehicle when you decide to take a trail? You might even consider one of those small light travel trailers that you can easily tow. But again, parking can be an issue. Perhaps not the best idea unless you go out for dray trips and return back to your trailer at an RV campsite. There are thousands of those all over the place. RV parks cost money, but nothing like motel rooms. You will have to experiment over time to see what works best. Gord

Congrats on retirement, some people just take to it instantly, it took me a bit. After a month or two i loved it. I got up every morning 5:15 am for 32 years. Started riding my bike and poof found my thing. Nice ride thanks for sharing. P.S. is your brooks a B17?

Yes I did and it's an excellent question but I'm not sure on price. If you look at bikekatytrail.com/share-a-ride.aspx there are a lot of services but I think there are some gaps like the one you mentioned as well as something from Windsor to Clinton. The other need is someone to do daily bag transfer if a group is doing the entire trail. A few weeks ago I was on the Erie Canal Trail and came across an entrepreneur who just drives along with the tour group. I'd say there were 25-30 people in that group so I'd imagine that would be profitable. I've been approached about doing guided tours but I've been hesitant because the additional logistics are demanding but if there are people like you willing to consider that, maybe it's more possible.

Wish you had pointed out the towns you passed by, even if you didn't stop.

Like do they talk about it in positive ways? 2) do you think the Rock Island extension will be built? I was reading last night that it was rejected by the state recently. And… 3) Missouri or Missourah? 😂

@@RideAlongAdventures I’M QUITE LOUD, easier to read I know why you chose not to stop at the one location ☺️ it was like a time warp back to “smoke everywhere 1970’s” You could only #2 in the women’s restroom, AND not aloud to flush any TP 😂

I like biking with you. At 73 , I can no longer do it so I ride along with you. May I give some constructive criticism. As handsome as you are I think you spend too much time with your face on the screen. Watch NYC Walking Show or Action Kid in New York. They walk and talk to us at the same time but rarely do you see their face. I like to see who's talking but not quite as much as you do. Thank you for pointing out sights , sounds, wildlife, flowers etc along the way. You really hit the trail so I enjoy watching you. Talking to us helps with the loneliness.

Yo, Space Ghost! (Still one of my favorite KZread “handles 😂) yeah, I think some people find it boring-flat, rolling farm land, etc. personally, I disagree. I really enjoyed the history, small towns, etc. I’d like to see it during fall colors. It was a very mellow, peaceful ride for me mostly because I was looking for that. But ya know…to each his own. Best wishes.
