The Yakuts, also commonly called Sakha, are a Turkic people living in the Sakha Republic of Russia. The Yakuts are densely settled in the cold and vast regions of Siberia, especially around the Lena River. Their native language is Yakutian, but most Yakuts speak other languages such as Russian.
Yakuts have traditionally engaged in activities such as hunting, fishing and animal husbandry. They have also developed clothing and structures suitable for the cold climate. Traditional beliefs such as shamanism and animism are important in their culture. Today, although the Yakuts are under the influence of modern life, they try to preserve their cultural heritage and continue traditional activities.
