A Journey Through the World of Helical Pile Principals and Standards

When compared with traditional foundation methods, Helical/Screw Piles have many advantages. In Jerome’s presentation, he will take you on a journey through the world of Helical Pile Principals and Standards, Installation Equipment, the Relationship between Torque and Load Capacity, Helical Pile Applications, and finally a Load Test Concept. After hearing what Jerome has to say, you will understand the theory, the installation and different applications for helical piles, then ultimately making the connection as to why helical piles are a wise, cost-effective foundation solution.

I have an engineers report indicating the stairs off the helical piled deck should have hinges for soil movement. Any examples of this ??

How does this deal with rocky soil with lots of boulders/rocks of various sizes?

I’d imagine it doesn’t get through bedrock or places with large rocks. Soil with smaller rocks but I have no experience just prediction.

It depends on the pile installers equipment. Some companies like Techno use the small ATV type cart with a hydraulic motor (6:35) where as others use a mini-excavator with a hydraulic motor. For those using mini-exes there is a bit more manoeuvrability when you encounter obstructions underground as you can disconnect the motor and dig them out of the way. For minor obstructions like smaller rock (the size of a mans chest or smaller) you can often angle the pile blade underneath the rock and then straighten out. If you run into bedrock a different foundation system is required. Some companies can bore holes into the rock while other will use rock drills and mount directly to the bedrock. Some soil conditions with lots of boulders and little soil are not appropriate for piles
