Absolutely stunning property and gardens, imagine in the UK with boundary wars that go on😮😂 . My elderly late cousin lived in Paris in the 60's for awhile, gave me a beautiful ornate gold and marble oval dressing table mirror which would fit right in there. Ty for staring Joel 🎉( and your camera lady too)🎉

Thank you, no need to tell you that you could get about 8 of these houses for the price of one in the UK! France is awash with some amazing antiques and "ancien" items that have just thankfully never been thrown away - and camera lady seems to be able to spot every single one! haha! It's so difficult to find the time to get out there at the moment with the workload etc but I will bring some updates on this - I hope you enjoy this little series, it's not my usual stuff but it is about the wildlife :) Have a wonderful weekend, best wishes - Joel

So many younger people are moving out of these little towns and villages to find work and therefore so many houses are vacant, so bringing more people to the town should hopefully help it to thrive, it has so much to offer. There is so much property available in France Marion, but when I saw this little place and the garden by the river it was a rush to try to obtain it! The owner of the property had died and I had to liaise with his children, all of them were so very helpful and it's one of the reasons I want to bring it back to it's previous glory - they spent many happy years down by that river as children so I have already said that they are free to use it when they want and their own children included as they still live in the village - although when I last saw the garden I'm not so sure they could have accessed it! Wow, Wow, Wow. What a fabulous place. The garden reminds me of here when we took it over 26 years ago and I still have bindweed and bramble! I'm very good at removing bramble. (hint , hint!) As someone else has said the wood panelling in the hall and up the stairs doesn't look very French. I can see the whole house painted in pale sage, ochre and cream tones.

  • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Hey Karen, thank you... this certainly gives me optimism, knowing how beautiful your garden is now, aside from the bramble and bindweed! :) That panelling has given me several nightmares, it can't stay as "gloss pine", it certainly needs to blend in - the trouble as well is that we're really not sure what is behind it, is it stone... has it been rendered... Working out the scaffolding/stair ladder set-up isn't going to be easy either! I really want the house to be finished asap, it should have been done by now, if it wasn't for the pandemic etc - I just want to be able to share it with like-minded people (yourselves included) so that they can enjoy a break, in amongst the nature and the wonderful village, and also use it as a base to explore other adjacent areas. La Rochelle for example, isn't close but in my mind it's as beautiful as St Tropez, just without the extra expense! I'll continue to document the house and garden and am hoping that I can steal a few days later in the month to look at the garden again and try to keep it in check - such a dramatic difference when I returned after 2 years, not sure what I was expecting but I was so pleased to see the growth and creatures that it has helped. Catch up properly soon, best wishes - Joel

Hey! I'll see if she'll follow me back to the UK... jokes aside though, when I first ever visited the property after purchasing it, I started reversing off the drive part and saw her in the rear-view mirror, on the back seats! We were headed to Callais so thankfully I spotted her, otherwise I could have easily been stopped at the border for cat-trafficking! As soon as the house is finished I plan to share it with like-minded people (such as yourself) so they too can enjoy the area and the peace and respite it offers, I'd also like to bring more people to Ambrieres as a lot of smaller villages are "suffering" due to the younger generation wanting to live in more vibrant/lively places, hence there being so much cheap property available, and most on the market for several years. It goes without saying that, once the house is finished, you are more than welcome to use it :) Best wishes - Joel

A fantastic blank canvas! It is difficult to assess just how much more growth you get given warmth and proximity to the river, water will make everything grow at an amazing rate, the problem is to keep some control or the more vigorous species that will soon take over at the expense of those plants to do need light. It would be strategic to buy the derelict cottage if it becomes available as it is the only way of stopping it being developed into a modern block house. As you observe, it will be some time before you know just what land is yours! Stay safe! Chris B.

Not sure if you saw the brief clip but I had cleared the garden 2 years ago, keeping what was native and ensuring other plants had a chance to grow, it really was overgrown with bramble. Two years later, however, it is much more native, but growing rather too well - I hope to get back out there in a few weeks, just for a few days to tackle the garden again while it's still winter and so it's not so much of a shock if I make it there in summer! :) I'm glad you enjoyed this, many more videos to come and a specific set of videos on the property inside and out and renovation progress - best wishes, Joel

Grand looking property you’ve got there Joel. My instinct would be to leave the upper garden more or less as is, plus a table and chairs perhaps. And the river garden, well you know what to do with it much better than I. The house, make it easy on yourself, use what you can, neutral paint colour on the shiny panelling will bring up that glorious stairs. Good luck to you.

Thank you Neil, when I first saw it it seemed both pretty and handsome at the same time and seeing the original features, aside from the natural surroundings, certainly sold it to me. Yes, no structural changes to the top garden but I'd like to get many more native pollinator plants in, but ones that can manage on their own due to my lack of being there. The river garden, hopefully two years ago I planted enough trees and shrubs so that I can concentrate on adding more native species of plants to maximise the potential for wildlife. Totally agree re the house too, I want to restore it using all the original features it has to offer, and agree also that the highly varnished pine is probably way too "dark" and that stairway needs lightening - but I am still trying to work out the easiest way to paint at great heights, and incorporating a spiral staircase too ;) I will keep everyone updated on the progress, best wishes - Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thanks for the reply Joel. As you mentioned to another commentator, you have spoken to the previous owners so maybe they can tell you how the panelling was previously varnished or actually installed? Good luck, Neil.

Wow, never knew you had a second house....and in France! Very nice and that garden is huge! Lovely right by the river as well, but I hope you don't get problems with flooding when there is too much rain. Can I be very cheeky and ask how much you paid for it?! I'm just wondering how cheap (or not) houses like that are in France. Can't wait to see the next part of your journey. 🙂

Hi :) Sorry for the delay - property is very inexpensive in France, well compared to the UK anyway. This probably cost circa £45k including legal fees/stamp duty equivalent etc. There's nothing I could even contemplate purchasing in the UK for that amount, I doubt in most areas it would get you a garage these days! I spoke to the neighbour about flooding and there has been none, although the river does rise a little during particularly heavy downpours. I am so glad you're enjoying the videos and I can't wait to share the one about another town whose local govt and residents now consider nature FIRST before planning and maximise potential for nature at any opportunity. Thanks for your encouragement and support, I appreciate it :) Best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Wow, I can't believe how cheap that is compared to here! That is food for thought indeed. Do you speak much French? Was that your wife I saw briefly in the video holding the camera? Sorry for all the questions! A town where the local gvt and residents put nature first?!!! Wow, that is incredible! I would definitely like to move there! Why can't the whole world be like that? We need to be more than ever, nature is struggling, we must do everything to protect it. I love watching your videos, I'm a big fan. I would love to meet you one day, somewhere. You've met David Attenborough too, he is my idol, I grew up watching all his documentaries and still do to this day. Never miss one, and I would dearly love to meet him as well one day. He is incredible. 🙂❤

Hi there, thank you so much, I am really glad you enjoyed this. For this property and grounds in France it was circa £45k including taxes/legal, which is incredibly cheap compared to the UK. With this video my partner was doing a lot of the filming. I will be doing more videos of the work on the house and gardens so please keep in touch - oh and Ambrieres-Les-Vallee is in the Pay de la Loire region - here is a short video I made of the town when I first visited two years ago - you can see the house from across the river bank: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pHx41dJyd6qbf6Q.html Best wishes, and thank you again - Joel

Hello there :) Thank you, agreed, although it will take some effort and planning to be able to access the height of the panelling on the stairs, I hope to be able to restore the house to as it would have been in the 1920s when it was built - with some modern comforts of course :) One day soon I hope to be able to share the house with more people so they can enjoy it too, just a lot of work in the meantime - I'll be continuing to post update videos on the house and garden :) Best wishes, Joel

Think you need an indoor elevator! (French for elevator?) Looks like a great place for “French doors” leading to back! What’s up with that? Now that I’ve finished watching this and previously watched your UK home video of front yard…….why on earth isn’t the French home your “real” home? Don’t get it… You move there full time due to Brixett? I’m in USA. Your politics there are just as confusing!

Hi there, sorry for delay. No, on that front I'm pretty lucky in that once a property is purchased it's yours, wherever you live in the world. Brexit does of course sadly mean that I am restricted to a maximum of 3 months max visits in every 6 months... it also includes other EU countries so my dreams of retiring and exploring Europe further kind of came to a halt. I won't stop planning to retire there though, just a few more gardens to convert in the UK first ;) To be fair, I wouldn't have time to spend more than 3 weeks abroad in one go due to work etc but knowing I can spend 3 months there over a total of 6 is still enough time to get things done :) Best wishes, Joel
