I'm not an expert by any means, but I wonder if the big issue here was not having enough indexing keys on the first mold. When you do a cut mold you're essentially creating a ton of indexing keys to help the mold lock together properly, and you get the least amount of flashing / mold lines. Just a thought :). Awesome video though I love your work!!!

Thanks, yeah I think you’re right. Although there are keys on the outside edge I think the silicon’s moving slightly. There’s also a little flex to the fibre glass case. I’m going to be doing some moulds soon so I plan to abandon the matrix mould approach and do some simple two part moulds using the method where you use marbles in the clay to create keys. Although they use more silicon I’ve tended to get better results. Thanks for watching 😁

When I make my molds, I block out the area similar to what you did with the polystyrene and the build up a 10mm or so layer of clay or the polystyrene and around my model to the area I want to be my parting line. I press in alignment keys into the clay using a medium sized acorn nut. Then I use a brush on silicone in layers so I can make sure to get into all the fine details on the first layer, and then I use subsequent thickened brush on layers until I get about a 10-12mm thickness. Then I build half of the fiberglass mother mold over that. Then I flip that over, and remove the polystyrene blocks and clay. I use a spray on mold release on the silicone area, and then start again with the thin brush on silicone, the thickened brush on silicone, and once that has completely set up, I brush Vaseline on the face of my fiberglass mother mold, and then lay up the other half of the mother mold. When that cures, I drill bolt holes around the edges of the mother mold insert bolts and wing nuts, tighten them and then finally use a dremel to cut the fiberglass evenly to smooth out the edges. Then I remove the bolts, and demold my model. I get fantastic results with minimal to no flashing at the parting line. Also, since I use a brush on silicone, I can use a fraction of what I would have used had I done a standard pour. Any way, I really like your pieces and will be subscribing to your channel.

Thanks for info, sounds like a similar process. I could probably do with adding some more keys between the two layers of silicon if I do end up doing another matrix mould. Thanks for the tip!

These are some proper hot sculpts 😰 Glove mould with low shore a would be viable.

Thank you again for another great video! Excellent tip about the plaster in the poly resin! We used to do the same thing but use fumed silica (which is pretty nasty stuff) in school. I will definitely try the plaster out next time. Any specific kind of plaster you use?

Great video, really informative! Do you ever have problems with sculptures getting mashed up when adding the water based clay on top of them? I'm guessing the water based clay is a lot softer than the oil based? Looking forward to your next video! :)

Thanks! The chavant is tougher than the water based clay so it's generally OK, I do break the sculpture a little on the second mould though.

curious on what resin you use for the cast? great work, way to stick with a project till you get it to where you are happy with it.
