A Jazzmaster Fanatic Reviews The New Player II Jazzmaster | PlayJason

Музыка

The Jazzmaster is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite guitar! As an outspoken fan of the fabled offset, imagine my surprise when Fender reached out to me to check out and help introduce the new Player II Jazzmaster.
So, what’s new with the Player II? Is this a worthy follow-up akin to The Empire Strikes Back, or is it Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel that no one asked for?
Let’s dive right in and provide some insight.

    Pau Ferro done right is beautiful. Had some before CITIES and it was like ebony in feel. Fender just didn't spend the time on them and they were dry and rough on the Mexico stuff. So everyone remembers Pau Ferro as rough, but orange streaks and dry. Which isn't true. Plus the benefit was that it wasn't an endangered/overharvested species of tree.

    There’s something about how you isolated your pedals’ colors when indicating what you’ll be using that really hits me in a good spot. The slow fade of other colors felt so slow/smooth that I didn’t even notice it at first but my eyes had no effort in focusing on the pedal you were indicating. A weird observation, maybe, but I just really really liked it and it just wouldn’t leave my mind, lol. It just feels different from others that do it too, and honestly yours is the answer to Plato’s Form in my eyes. The rest of the video’s great, too!

    It's basically the Tele formula (two pickups, one volume, one tone, and a 3 way switch) in a Jazzmaster. I have a Xaviere JT 100 (pretty upgraded) and this would be the closet version to that guitar. The only knock I can put on tiis is the off white plastics with the white pickguard looks off. Black covers and two black witch hat knobs would look way better on this. Cool guitar amigo!😎👍✨

  • @JasonTMays

    You know, I need to get my hands on one of those Xaviere JT’s. I’ve been curious about them and some of the Harley Benton stuff. But, I agree in terms of looks. I don’t mind it as much, but I am thinking of putting a tort guard on here cause I have one from decoboom. But thanks bud. 😬

  • @gringogreen4719

    @gringogreen4719

    17 күн бұрын

    @@JasonTMays The JT is worth trying out. It's made pretty well but since it is made in an overseas factory it still has some of the cheapo problems. I don't know why they used off white knobs but I put on the pearloid and chrome UFO knobs instead. The pots that come on it are 500k pots, definitely worth upgrading to 1 Meg CTS pots (they also dropped right in on the pickguard, no need to reem it). At this point the pickups really open up and you get a guitar that sounds much more like a Jazzmaster. The pickups are the same as GFS sells and many people replace Squier and MIM Fender Jazzmaster pickups with these, no complaints, the bridge has a Twangy bite and the neck is warm and full. For my mods I put in locking tuners, Graph Tech string trees, a Decoboom surf neck plate, CTS 1 Meg pots, an Orange Drop 47 capacitor, a Switchcraft jack, and a JD Moon metal three way switch. I also shielded the cavity with copper tape. What is left is that I want to buy a Halon bridge (Tele style three barrel brass bridge) and Tremolo. I am mainly a Tele guy but I have been very happy with the JT 100 that I modded (I am learning luthier skills and I am upgrading Import guitars with US specced electrics and better than stock pickups which I call my "Primo Cheapos"). Stock the JT 100 is somewhere in-between a Squier and a MIM Fender. The body and neck are pretty good (I did have to "fill and redrill" one of the neck screws (the one on the far corner, whoever made it fudged up twice and and both needed to be filled and then properly aligned to redrill)) and the pickups sound great once you upgrade to 1 Meg pots. As my guitar stands right now I think it would give this Jazzmaster a run for its money. Once I have the Halon parts I think it will surpass this model. That said it still has an Import feel to it (I've owned many Import guitars and they feel pretty familiar to me). I hope this helps. I don't have any Harley Benton, but I do own two IYV Thinline Tele style guitars that come out of the same Vietnam factory as some of the HBs do. They are part of my "Primo Cheapos" and they are "Ok" as stock but much better just keeping the neck and body and replacing everything else.

    That's a really nice refresh! Improvements in just the right places, and I like the simplified controls! My favorite so far was the MIJ Hybrid II, but if you say the pickups are better on the Player II and the quality is on the same level, if that's true, that's awesome news! Especially considering it's cheaper as well! The only things I prefer on the MIJ Hybrid II is the pickup toggle position and maybe the fact that it's MIJ - I just trust them more because the Mexico factory produced lots of lemons recently.

    Great review! I had to watch it twice because I got distracted trying to figure out where I recognized that Radiohead riff from. As a Jazzmaster aficionado, have you played a G&L Doheny? That's what I think of when I hear 'contemporary update to the Jazzmaster'. At $830, that puts the Player II just above the Tribute series Doheny ($700ish) with similar specs. Sounds like there's a lot to like about the Player II, and if I had my way the Doheny would have a Mastery or Descendant style upgraded JM vibrato to make it 'modern' rather than the Strat style trem, but the JM/MFD pickups and passive treble/bass controls kind of make it a toss up for me. It would be cool to hear them head to head as different takes on what Modern Jazzmaster could mean.

    The pros: ~ Rosewood is back! ~ Dot inlays ~ Mustang bridge is a no-brainer instead of the terrible vintage threaded saddles ~ Pickups seem good ~ Getting rid of the lock button on the vibrato plate simplifies things, since players are far less likely to break a string when using a Mustang bridge The cons: ~ They moved the tremolo plate forward to increase the string break angle over the bridge, which has historically been a problem when setting up Jazzmasters. Technically, it's a sound move. But I doubt it will please the traditionalists and vintage diehards. ~ Poly finish instead of nitrocellulose. ~ "Classic Gear" tuners? I wish they'd just used vintage Klusons, which are simpler and have stood the test of time ~ I wish the neck had the beefier "60's C" shape instead of the flatter "Modern C" ~ No rhythm circuit makes it arguable whether this is a "real" Jazzmaster since that feature is so crucial to the "DNA" of the JM. Overall, it's a good choice for guitarists new to the Jazzmaster, with the caveat that they understand that it's not a classic Jazzmaster but rather a contemporary and lower budget spin on the model.

  • @JasonTMays

    @JasonTMays

    23 күн бұрын

    Yea, I concur for the most part. However, I had to take a step back and realize this isn’t a traditional Jazzmaster so I cant really judge it as such. But yea, It’s definitely a solid choice for anyone new to the offset/Jazzmaster experience.

    I don't see how poly instead of nitro can be considered a con on a sub $1000 MIM Fender, that's just par for the course. I do wish it had a RM, but most famous JM players just taped over it anyway so it's not really a big deal.

    Overall it's a nice looking guitar. I prefer a RC but it's not a deal breaker. I am not sure why Fender thinks moving the vibrato closer to the bridge is an improvement. I know the purpose is to increase break angle for the strings but the same can be achieved with a proper guitar setup. If you angle the neck and raise the bridge it works great. It seems like a solution to a problem that really isn't a problem.

    The Doheny would make for an interesting comparison.

    I think as we are getting older we have to realise that at one point, playing Radiohead will be indeed considered "dad rock" 😢

    Fender's worst decision with Jazzmasters was to make the humbuckers standard on their Player I series.

    Rosewood fretboard Rolled fretboard edges Actual jazzmaster pickups More finish options Alder not basswood (alders more durable) 1k pots for a more accurate JM sound

    I think the Player series is ok, but I’m not a fan of the Player Jazzmasters. If it doesn’t have a rhythm circuit, is it even really a Jazzmaster?

  • @JasonTMays

    IMO: despite the lack of a rhythm circuit I think it still retains enough of the jazzmaster DNA for most people. It’s enough of a Jazzmaster for the folks who want a stripped down Jazzmaster.
