Japanese woodsmen and hunters carried these knives in old days. They work as a wood chopper, an emergency weapon, a game dressing knife, and a utilitarian knife. They have versatility. Thanks.

I am a Japanese and I want to support Japanese traditional knife makers in general. I guess western people like full tang construction very much for choppers. But I prefer Japanese short tang and ring construction very much for choppers because it shifts the balance pretty forward and is still tough enough. And I feel the Japanese wood sheath very cool. But my favorite Toyokuni company doesn't have its English website while Kanetsune has. I prefer Toyokuni personally and made this video. Thanks.

I stumbled onto this video and I was happy to see such a unique and interesting knife that shows how different cultural idea's can be a thing of beauty. I love the design of the handle that is both unique and practical. I like the wood sheath idea and the use of copper to reinforce it. Something you don't see very often in the United States is wooden sheaths. Very interesting.

We have many survival stories from bear attacks. They survived it even if wounded heavily. All the survivors had a hatchet. When a single chop hit a bear, it will get away almost always. All the killed people didn't carry anything. So almost all the fresh water fishermen and wild edible plant or mushroom gathering people carry a hatchet in the forests. It is very famous and popular in Japan. Thanks.

Almost all of Japanese fresh water trout fishermen carry this kind of knife to protect themselves from a bear attack. It is basically an emergent weapon and isn't used much. As a wood tool we traditionally use a square blade called Nata hatchet. The both has the same tang, pins, and ring construction and it holds well. But in many cases the ring gets loose after some uses. But it doesn't result in loosening the blade because the ring doesn't move forward pinched between the handle and the blade.

@MisterMinnesota I have never batoned wood with a Japanese style knife. However I have ever chopped wood with a Japanese style hatchet with the same connection between the blade and handle many times. And then No play took place in the connective portion, never. From that experience I guess its construction is tough enough to be batoned. I am not sure but guess. Thank you.

@pelahale Thank you very much for your comment. Honestly I did the same test on the Japanese knife next morning and the result was worse. The swing moment of BK2 is far stronger than the Japanese knife, so the BK2 chops wood very fast. But to think of actual utility in survival situation, I don't think the Japanese one is far behind BK2. I love its light weight and easy handling.

@BlodOgTorden It is the one for 17,850 yen. My one has a longer loop though. But the longer belt loop seems useless. The regular loop takes 2 inch belt. The longer one takes 4 inch belt. 17850 yen ... that's about $165 ... considering the steel qualiy that's a fair price .. Hitachi Aogami is better than O1 ... probably has similar qualities to 52100 ... but heat treating is crucial for both ... 52100 can be on the brittle if it's not well heat treated ..excellent edge retention and wear resistance, very fine grained ... tougher and generally better than Shirogami (except for edge retention) because of alloying

If you need the exact same knife in a blue paper steel, it is 17.850 yen with a 2 inch belt loop. The long loop takes 4 inch belt and makes the knife hang low. But it's a short knife and you won't need to pay 3.675 yen for the long loop. They take PayPal and ship by EMS. They start making the knife after the order and it will take 2 weeks to finish it. Thanks.

The hilt on the Japanese knife is good. It prevents the fingers from sliding forward onto the blade, if the handle is wet with water or blood or whatever. All knives should have this guard.

The white paper steel doesn't contain Chromium and Tungsten. So it is a pure carbon steel and less wear resistant. The blue paper steel contains such complements and is high wear resistant. In my experience the white paper steel needs larger edge angle not to take micro chips or rolls. It is widely used for the core of forestry tools. The blue paper steel is widely used for the core of quality knives. I don't have so many experiences with Japanese steels and cannot say about them any more.

Saw some try and cut a watermelon with the Becker, we almost died of hunger waiting LOL. I see no problem with the half tang.

We are forbidden from owning handguns. We have lots of bears in mountains. And we have lots of stories where a fishermen or a climber survived a bear attack with a Ken-Nata (Sword-Hatchet). So it is generally accepted that we should carry this kind of knife in mountains. I have been carrying it since I started fresh water trout fishing when I was 18 years old or so. It is my 3rd Ken-Nata. The first 2 ones had a 20 cm blade and were illegally long but accepted to carry in mountains. Thanks.

I think the point of Japanese knife's construction is its short tand and ring/pin connection. It makes the knife pretty front heavy for chopping. The blue paper steel seems to have almost the same quality as American A2 tool steel. This knife comes in a zero ground Saber Convex bevel. Thanks.

Because our land has lots of forests. And the mountains are steep and dangerous. We have lots of animals, fish, edible plants to get from there. Some Japanese have had a forest life in history. They have needed such knives as this one. It is a part of Japanese forest life tradition. By the way many mountain climbers carry a similar knife to protect themselves from a sudden bear attack in reality. We have lots of bears in our forests. It is also useful for fire making of course. Thanks.
