I think his boots could have easily gotten strung around and away from the other items if an animal was eating on a piece of his legs..and the gun well for all we know the guy that found the remains could have simply took the gun and kept it for himself and denied ever seeing a gun ... something simple like these reasons are likely the answers

Anyone who has ever been out in the wild will tell you that a bad knee can be a death sentence. Therefore, separating from a friend who isn't well is a complete lie. It might make sense to a city park hiker or a youtube professor but out there in the true wilderness it doesn't happen. Heck, even if your sat phone is dead or your emergency supplies are compromised, I AM NOT LEAVING YOU ALONE, PERIOD.

Be weary of companions who can't swim if youre going where water is. Heard a bad story from the bwca, told by the survivor, apparently they (two men) were canoe-ing down a river and one of them caught a fish, they got exited and tipped the conoe. The guy who couldnt swim just sat there clinging to the upturned canoe and could not be coaxed into trying for shore. So eventually the guy who could swim left him there. (What's he gonna do wrestle a scared man in the cold water and get drowned?) Anywho long stoory short he spent a few nights freezimg his butt off, then found his way out and gave up drinking thereafter according to him. I forget the man's name but I listened to his cautionary lecture about respecting the woods, in person at VCC in Ely MN. Nice guy, I won't go camping with a person who can't swim, I just don't want a story like that on my head.

Interesting case, well presented! I am a forensic anthropologist, there are a couple of interesting things that I can see, particularly in the cranial fragments seen at 13:31, 13:35 and 19:33. They show bending, radiating fractures and adhesion; all of which suggest that the skull was fractured at or around the time of death-- while the bone is still pliable. Now, "at or around the time of death" can be anywhere from seconds to days after death (depending on environmental conditions) but the pattern and placement are consistent with a blow to the occipital region (blunt force trauma to the back of the head) near and slightly behind the right ear. These injuries could be caused by a fall, a slip in which the victim hits their head on a hard object (like a rock or log), or a hit from a solid object, any of which would have been fatal. The scapula shows chew marks from a scavenger, but that is almost certainly produced in the ten years that the body lay exposed and is unlikely to be related to his death in any way. Just some idle thoughts that you may find interesting.

Reminds me of the story where the little boy goes into a cave and sees a bunch of shoes and guns. He said they were old and covered in dust. The woman he was with who appeared to be his Grandma asked him to go to the bathroom but he didn't have to go. Something else could be going on here and his friends could be innocent just feeling guilty for leaving him. Regardless, someone hurt and killed a dog. More should have been done to see if there was a microchip or any way to find out who did that.

My mother Michelle was friends with Todd and Julie since they moved to pollock Idaho or something like that outside of riggins Idaho. We always went to their coffee shop! In fact my mom lived in the apartments that was behind the stand in year 2008-2009 (or maybe earlier I can’t recall I was pretty young). I remember my mom calling me about Todd’s disappearance in 2010 and how shocked the whole town was but everyone had hope that he’d be found. Well In December when I’d go visit my mom during school winter break he was still never found and so we had a little “celebration of life” if ya will for him. 😢 and then as years went on I guess I sort of forgotten the story cause I thought that was the closure and then I came across this video and OMG. So SO many unanswered questions. RIP Todd Hofflander 😢❤

Do they still own the coffee shop? I used to get beans and coffee there when we had our cabin in Pollock. I miss that cabin no cell service! We did have power just no running water. I’d have to build an outhouse area with our portable toilet every time we went up. I never thought I’d hear that little town named on the big screen if you will, let alone Riggins. Although there’s been two other missing persons cases in that area a few years back. I was shocked to hear about those, I believe they both went missing the same day. A third vanished in Idaho same day but it was a different area and I don’t know too much but about that third case though. Also I just remembered a young girl that went missing in Riggins a couple years ago also. I am not sure what happened with that case either I didn’t hear anything else about it.

I'm so happy that at least the dog turned up. In other videos of people telling this story that I've watched, they just briefly mention he went missing with the dog and then never spoke of it again. I know some people don't really care for animals and find it insensitive to be glad an animal survived when a human died. But just because I'm happy the dog lived doesn't mean I'm not sad that Todd did not.

Strange how dogs give humans such total loyalty and devotion, they will even follow their owner into the wilderness. Yet in a story like this, we don't return that loyalty to them, but instead mock those who express thanks that the animal at least was spared the tragic death of its owner. I too give thanks that sweet Ruby lived. I felt heart-sore when there was mention of a 'skinned dog' having been found in the river. Very glad it was not her - I hope that was not another poor dog cruelly killed. The fact Todd's 'friend' Jeff was said to have a history of cruelty to dogs, raised serious concerns about the possibility of foul play. If a person is mean to a dog, who only wants to love and be loved, what hope do the people in his life have? It is surely suspicious that Todd's gun and boots were apparently missing when his remains were finally found. Of course it's possible in the 10 years he was missing, someone simply stumbled upon them and took them, without reporting the discovery to police. The boots were presumably on his feet, so it suggests whoever took them was aware of his death. That is chilling - but it doesn't mean the thief necessarily killed him. I hope sweet Ruby had/is having a good life back with her family, and wasn't taken on any more hunting trips. She deserved a peaceful life of home comforts and quiet family times, after the trauma of losing her owner Todd. Yes, if anyone doubts it, animals feel grief, and they mourn the loss of loved ones!

As for alerting the rangers, who knows what signal service was like out there. I think it's possible that the poor dead dog that was found during their search, the dog that was tortured to death, actually WAS Ruby and Jeff or his friends found a near identical dog and trained her to answer to Ruby and Todd's names then placed her in a search location where they figured she would be found. Ruby being highly suspected of having been tortured to death would have been very suspicious as far as what may have happened to Todd and would have made it very much more likely in the minds of police, that Todd had been murdered. Put that in with that Jeff was known to abuse and beat dogs. It does not make sense that the real Ruby would have been unscathed when she was alleged to have been found, with a clear and shiny coat, well fed, no scratches or abrasions, without her owner etc... unless that dog was, at least possibly, NOT Ruby.

The thing is there’s a line that a friend, even a bad one, wouldn’t cross and this Jeff and Steve definitely crossed it. I’ve cancelled on meeting up with friends and family before now, I tend to find people difficult to understand and tiring and sometimes I just don’t feel like being around them (I’ve recently been diagnosed with being autistic) but I would never cancel on meeting up with someone only to call them up to describe that I was doing what we had originally planned on doing without them as even I know how cruel that would be.

He also was the person who sold Jerry the policy in the first place. The couple were married only 6 yrs & she got 2.5 million It all came out when insurance guy/ hubby #2 kidnapped the black widow in 2016 out of fear she'd tell what he did since she had recently filed for divorce from him. But he wasn't stupid. He went to the police first, confessed , told where the body could be & made a deal where he'd get no more than 20 yrs. Denise Williams stood trial & got life but it was overturned .However she was resentenced and got 30 yrs. **The police had been told gators don't eat in winter which made them suspicious of the wife for years & his family kept the police investigating the cold case off & on for years with no results. This just goes to show you don't know what really happened when someone doesn't come back & others could know something.

I find it unlikely that someone else found his remains. Even if it was close to the time that Todd disappeared/died which would mean the sidearm and boots were in relatively good condition, then why take the boots. It’s not impossible that the boots were expensive and they took the valuable things with them, but most people don’t wear or buy second had boots or shoes, not to mention the fact that for several days, if not longer, the area was covered with all sorts of people searching for Todd and afterwards hunters were on the lookout for him. Also why just take those two things only? If you’re the type of person that’s going to literally take the boots off a dead man to steal them then you’re also likely to be the type that would take as much valuable or decent gear off the body as well. If they came across the remains later, like when Todd’s disappearance wasn’t on peoples minds as much then the items wouldn’t be in anywhere near good condition and wouldn’t make any sense in taking them. I’m of the opinion that that Jeff and Steve killed him.

They have exhumed soldiers from WWII almost 90 years later , whom were buried in mass graves and their skeletal remains still had their boots on … The fact that his bones were scattered and only a few left , is an obvious sign of scavenging - So I guess the boots / leg bones could have been carried off by scavengers … But I don’t know of any scavengers that remove from a holster, then carry off a .44 magnum revolver … Could have been a pos that found him and took shit and said nothing… But who knows - My only thoughts are , if you plan to go on such trips , you need to have location tools if something bad happens , flare gun , SOS light , glow sticks , etc…. Don’t trust that your friend(s) good or bad , have the ability to help or save you. You need to be able to rely on yourself -

I suppose it is possible that smaller animals such as coyotes, raccoons, or skunks may have dragged them away with the lower legs since only a partial skeleton was present, but the fact that the holster was found sans handgun could indicate foul play from the beginning; or it could just simply be that someone else came upon the remains at some point and decided to keep the handgun and not report the remains to authorities. There’s only really two things that make any sense here. 1) Jeff killed Todd and Steve helped him cover it up. The things that make me think this are the polygraph failure, Todd’s wife’s comments about Jeff and Steve. The main thing is the fact that Steve burst into a police interview and said “we’re leaving” the way he did, I get the old line about not talking to the police, but a smart and calm person would have called a lawyer, especially if they believed their son was innocent, this sounds more like a father knowing his son had done something and panicked. 2) Someone else came across Todd, Todd calmed his dog down or he knew the person already and something happened that lead to them killing Todd. The fact that Todd was so far off the track, the missing sidearm and boots (why take such random items unless they had evidence on them). The fact the search dogs and heat seeking equipment couldn’t pick up any sign of Todd makes me think he was already dead before the search parties even went to look for him.

The fact the revolver wasn't found leads me to believe the possibility that Jeff killed Todd, maybe even accidentally. A commenter suggested a stranger found the gun and kept it. That's a possibility too. But I've always thought a certain amount of these disappearances are plain old murder. Jeff took a long time notifying authorities his "friend" was missing, "because he was searching for him." To me the fact the sheriff had suspicions about Jeff says a lot. Having only Jeff's side of the story leaves room for doubt, of course. Interesting story.

I left her in a shaded area, with water, food, my hiking staff, and instructions to stay put, then I set off for help. I ran into a group of hikers on the main trail and they went back with me to help carry her to the main trail then on a bit. We ran into park rangers who brought a quad and got her to the station. She had originally proposed to hobble as best she could after me but it's safer to stay in one place with shade than to hobble off to who knows what. It still took persuasion to overcome her stubbornness and pride. BTW, when I returned with the hikers she had her boots and socks off as well as her topshirt which she'd draped over her head. I'd have been heartbroken if something had happened to her. I'd have also been legally screwed as her family did not like me at all. 48 Hours would have had a field day.

Jeff is a lousy friend. Why would he not stay with Todd if his knee was bad? They're in the middle of the wilderness and having a significant injury can be serious if you're unable able to walk. Jeff should have stayed with Todd. It would be interesting to know whether or not Jeff valued the friendship with Todd. Why take advantage of him? While the facts about Jeff are still foggy, it's interesting how the wife painted him and his father in a negative limelight. For the polygraph, I don't put much emphasis on it, but the fact that police thought he was hiding something is suspicious to say the least. The strangest part is the missing gun. What happened to it? Did Todd use it to create a loud noise to alert search and rescue? Possibly. Or maybe he used it for wild animal kill. Though he would have to have had it on his person, even if he ran out of ammunition. It's also worth noting that Ruby was in relatively good condition when she was discovered - which makes anyone wonder how she managed to survive for a prolonged period of time. I don't know what to conclude - foul play or succumbing to the elements? In my opinion, Jeff knows more than what he claimed.

The three items that would lessen the chance of survival- 1) boots, revolver, and dog and all three are missing? An experienced outdoorsman had all of the essentials for survival including a gun and dog. Every hiker knows the most important piece of equipment is his boots. 2) Why was the dog found where he was healthy, well-fed, like he’s been at home and couldn’t lead authorities to Todd. Most dogs, especially a black lab, would easily take searchers to Todd. However, the dog would never have left Todd. Dogs are loyal sometimes to their own detriment. The dog had no idea because he was planted later. 3) If an experienced hiker like Todd was hurt, lost, or whatever, he would move off out of the brush to the open hillside where searchers could find him. At night, he would hunker down in the vegetation. However, his items were all found in his pack. Even if he was injured, the human body and fight for survival can allow one to do miraculous things like drag yourself into the open. The fact is that he wasn’t trying to survive. 4) The Sheriff’s office took the psychic’s report as valid but not the guy with the dowsing rods??? 5) The guy with the dowsing rods was damn near spot on! Have you ever seen Hell’s Canyon Wilderness along the Snake River? The odds of being that precise in that much rough country are astronomical!!! ONE person search would’ve found Todd, dead or alive. Conclusion: Todd was murdered. No hiker looses their gun, boots, and dog and their pack looked like it hadn’t been touched. The friend failed the polygraph. The dog showed up well fed and couldn’t lead them to Todd. Whoever did this got away with it. Nothing left for evidence. The dowsing rods guy needs to either be questioned as a suspect or accomplice or hired by the FBI because his accuracy is beyond unbelievable! Not only the canyon but the exact specific drainage and spot on the map (off by a hair)!!! Tale of a “friend” that turned on him. I would dare bet shot him with the gun which is probably at the bottom of the Snake as well as his boots. Kept his dog at his place, fed him, no planted the dog later just off of a road. Too much circumstantial evidence here.

Todd's "friend" and that friend's father behaved very suspiciously. If a friend of mine were to go missing out in the wilderness, I would contract S&R immediately instead of wasting valuable time searching from noon to nightfall and then again in the morning. The sensible thing to do would be for one person on the first day to search while sending the other to notify authorities. It is standard practice for hunters that if they are in need of help or rescue to fire off 3 shots into the air. A 44 Magnum makes a very loud boom and that sound would had echoed throughout the area. Yet, no one heard a thing. Even if Todd ran out of ammo, he could had built a signal fire. Such a fire would had been easily seen on any infrared/thermal imaging scope.

The route he was taking was only two miles long. He was only 240 feet off the trail. Very odd search teams did not find him only 240 feet off the trail. Also as a volunteer for SAR for that very state, we are trained to find the nearest water from trails missing hikers went on and follow both sides of it. In other words, how the searches didn't search both sides of the creek that the trail runs next to is very odd.
