My sister was a surrogate mother for 3 times. Her husband had a cancer, so she had to earn money for his treatment. Also she had two little children, and there were no money to pay for their studying at school. Unfortunately husband`s treatment was senseless and he died. In a few month she there was a labor. She carried two babies and unfortunately there began an internal bleeding. She died. Parents of children refused to give money for operation. There`re no laws in India protecting miserable surrogate mothers, when there would appear problems with their health during the pregnancy or after the birth of child.. Now her children are orphans.

That's such an insensitive thing to say, Beatrix. Do you understand that some woman have uterine cancers, no uterus, Asherman syndromes, all sorts of medical issues that means they can't carry a child. It is not their choice to use surrogate, surrogacy is the only solution for them to become mother. Surrogates help such women by allowing them to have family. Don't be judgey. It is easy to judge infertility when you have never experienced it. If you are feeling so strong, please go ahead and be an altruistic surrogate for someone. Otherwise your comment as good as "let them eat cake" comment.

I totally agree with the speaker. How do some authorities allow exploitation in their countries? Surrogacy is not natural which brings only negative to the potential surrogate mother, unborn baby. Moreover, surrogate babies are so weak. Mostly, these babies are delivered earlier to the term. Like any traditional pregnancy, a surrogate pregnancy comes with possible surrogate mother side effects and risks. The right surrogacy professional will take detailed steps to help prevent these risks, but the possibility will always exist. Therefore, any woman considering surrogacy should seriously think about how these potential risks and complications could affect her life. And I don’t get those women who agree to be involved in this risky procedure for money issue. I know that Ukraine is welcome commercial surrogacy and there are many women who are ready to be surrogate mothers. People must understand that surrogacy is an exploitation of poor women. And moreover, babies aren’t goods which you can so easily buy!

I agree that Ukraine has become a mecca for the surrogacy journey. But I can`t agree more that surrogacy is exploitation in Ukraine. Firstly, surrogacy mothers receive monetary compensation for the process. Secondly, nobody forced them to be involved in the process. It was their decision to help the infertile couple or earn some money. And finally, there are some couples who can`t succeed with the adoption process. What should then be done? You don’t understand that surrogacy is the last stage for someone to become happy parents. I believe you don’t know how it is hard to take a child from an orphan house. Every loving couple deserves to have at least one baby. And these couples aren`t guilty that they can`t have children naturally.

Surrogacy is a topic that has multiple ethical aspects to consider. Dr. Paula Gerber in this Ted Talk does a great job at looking at the topic of surrogacy through a view of human rights. At the start of her talk, she discusses a few well known causes of surrogacy “gone wrong.” These cases left babies stranded without home, babies abandoned by their parents, and visa and citizen complications from international surrogacy programs. As Dr. Gerber demonstrated, surrogacy can be viewed through many different lenses, such as the human rights perspective. I think it is important to consider this through a lens of medical ethics. Medical ethics is founded on four pillars of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. The two pillars I think needs to be considered when discussing surrogacy are autonomy and justice. Autonomy is the right patients have to make decisions about their medical care. It is imperative to consider the rights of the surrogate mother. In an ideal situation, a surrogate would be compensated properly for her services of carrying and growing a baby. It can become quite tricky when considering international surrogacy. The question arises? Are international surrogate women being exploited for their services? If a woman has limited career options and turns to be a surrogate mother, is her autonomy really respected? Justice is the concept of fair and equitable distribution of healthcare recourses. Do surrogate women in international countries have access to proper and necessary healthcare during their time as a surrogate? I believe there are many ethical considerations when it comes to discussing and considering surrogacy. A lot of these questions arise when considering international surrogacy organizations.

First, the children's interests and rights cannot be well guranteed under present legal and social environment once the biological parents abandon the babies. Second, both the surrogate and the babies are actually treated as commodities, which is against the basic concept of human rights. Third, when we say one policy is not applied or one technology shall not be carried out, because if it just solves the problems of a small amount of population, not most of the people, namely, it is not good for the public interest, or at under present circumstances, compared to the problems it may solve, it actually can bring more social problems and challenges which beyond of our ability.

Now i am 43 years old i know this is not the right age to be pregnant again as already i had many complications so i will go for surrogacy now to have a baby.

I'm just thankful we have this option nowadays. Though when undergoing surrogacy route we’ve got entirely different emotions. When we went for 12 weeks scan it was fabulous! We could see her face and everything. We got a scan pic of her profile and it was so clear we could see her nose and mouth!! My 21 week scan was also fab seeing every little detail of my little girl was just amazing. And it brought it home that our surrogate was carrying a small person of ours in her body! Scans are a wonderful thing either when you are or your surrogate is pregnant. It puts you so in touch with your baby! The whole world changes when a tiny one is placed into your hands..

Surrogacy has been a touchy medical subject within the United States over the last several years. The United States has seen highly increased rates of surrogacy after celebrities such as the Kardashians have made such procedures rather mainstream for those who can afford it. The services of surrogates have moreover become a convenience to the wealthy wishing to spare their body the labor of pregnancy rather than as a last-resort for couples struggling to birth children. As Dr. Gerber has stated in her video, the United States is indeed a country that has very loose regulations when it comes to the matter of surrogacy, opening the door for several potential breeches of medical ethics. For starters, virtually all surrogate pregnancies are performed in conjunction with in vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization already carries several ethical burdens with it and some have equated it with abortion due to the fact that there are often several fertilized embryos that are discarded following the procedure. As such fertilized embryos have the potential for life, many would argue that in vitro fertilization and therefore surrogacy are unethical on these grounds alone. In terms of the issues unique to surrogacy, my biggest concern would involve human trafficking. If babies are simply developed and birthed for the highest bidder without regulation, then they could be sent to environments where their wellbeing would be put into jeopardy. The surrogates are no exception to this either, and I fear that they could potentially be exploited in a similar manner, which is a concern that Dr. Gerber briefly mentioned as well. The public seems not to want to consider the effects that surrogacy may have on a child, as it can cause conflicting emotions about their origin. There is a myriad of other specific issues within surrogacy that also seem to degrade the sanctity of human life, such as the case referenced in this video where a baby was abandoned by its genetic parents once they discovered it had Down Syndrome. With more surrogate pregnancies happening out of convenience and with no regulation in the United States, such practice may become more widespread. I feel that the United States is at a crossroads regarding the issue of commercial surrogacy and action is required, additional regulation is needed for this practice if it is to be pursued ethically.

I like the ideas presented here for regulating surrogacy, if it must happen. But I am not really sure about surrogacy itself. Are there really many women who would want to be a surrogate mother if they were not desperate for money or doing it for family members/close friends? I doubt it. I am going to have to look into the ethical aspect of it all.

Classic. Those who have not gone through infertility always say this. Why is the burden on people who have infertility issues to adopt? If someone who had their children naturally has anyone turned around and said, why don't you adopt? Why have children naturally? Why don't you adopt? Adoption needs to be the first option NOT a fallback plan. Adoption the whole situation is started off as a trauma. "giving away a child" instead of giving back.

It is very annoying that an Ukrainian surrogacy clinic uses this talk for self-advertizing in every second comment below! They should stop it because it has the opposite effect. Apart from this, the talk gives food for thought. The perspective of human rights is trully the best to make one's mind about the problem. Indeed, child rights have priority, followed by sorrogates' rights. But since the surrogacy is driven by the intended parents and their money, the rights of the latter are usualy the best protected, which may be very unfortunate for the baby.

Surrogacy is a blessing. Today there are many people who finally have become parents via surrogacy. And I totally support this way of treatment thus kids are the gift of God. Unfortunately, today 1 of the 5th couple has difficulties to birth a child. Someone can`t conceive and someone succeeds with the delivery. Thus modern society needs surrogacy. It is a possibility of medicine which must be used if the couple can`t complete their family naturally. That’s why I am sure that we should have such treatment. Maybe people haven’t such problems in previous times. But now the statistic of infertility looks dramatically. And society must understand that nobody forced those women to be surrogate mothers. It is their decision to help infertile couples. Moreover, I appreciate that such women receive money for being surrogate mothers. Pregnancy is challenging and they have a right to receive compensation!

It should be legal everywhere. If a mother wants to have a kid but doesn’t want to raze it because of her career she should have a option to help others while she is at it. (If she is a high Judge, Prosecutor or wants to give her life to Politics, she should have the option to do so) I know professional women who have given there whole lives to such professions. In history there where many men who couldn’t have children it’s becoming more common for women to do so as well.

I would disagree on some points. As a lot of arguments have just been based on mere generalisations and on few examples more like inductive. However, being in the journey of surrogacy my experience has been a lot more different. I feel like if you choose the right clinic and your research about the legal structure. The process becomes a lot easier and wonderful. The clinic I opted for had legal documents for the child prepared so that the couple doesn't face any issues. It is ensured that surrogates are doing the process with their own will and are not being forced. My experience has so far been great as I get to meet the surrogate and we are connected at a very strong level. The clinic to ensures that surrogate is being taken care of as they call her for regular checkups and ensure her diet is healthy.

I am for surrogacy treatment because there are so many people out there who want children more than anything, and they would be great parents, and they have so much love and opportunities to give, and it wouldn't be fair to tell them that they aren't allowed to have one of their own, when so many women just have one after another and push them aside, and let welfare take care of them, or the system, not even really caring about them, and when so many women go out and get one abortion after another. it just wouldn`t be fair to tell a woman who can't carry a baby of her own that she will never have her dream of being a mother to her own biological baby. The infertility rate is increasing every year and it is great that today infertile couples have a chance to overcome their fertility problems with surrogacy treatment. Surrogacy is one more advantage of modern medicine.

There are a lot of problems on adopting children and money is better off spent on solving them by connecting these children worldwide to families who are willingly to take care of them. Surrogacy is not less than a boon for infertile couples. Infertility is a curse in our society these days. And surrogacy gives such couples a chance to get their own biological child. There are a lot of moral and social questions raised on it, like when there are so many homeless children, why can't couples adopt them? In some religions, it's equal to sin. In my opinion, there should be an ethical and legal guideline for surrogacy. One more important thing, it is becoming a mean of easy money for women in poor countries like in Ukraine. But at the same time, it is a place where infertile couples can finally receive their babies. To my great surprise, today more and more people are having their surrogacy process in that country. And I believe the popularity of Ukraine in surrogate issue was emerged because of the prices on surrogacy procedure there.

Today 1 out of 5 couples have difficulties getting pregnant. For couples who dream of having their own children, infertility is frustrating and stressful. Having children and fulfilling the wish for a family with the help of a surrogate mother is, therefore, the possibility of living out that dream. And it is great that today modern medicine gives an opportunity for having children to everyone. No one chooses their infertility status and we can`t blame those who are dealing with the surrogacy process. Maybe someone opposes my opinion but still, I think that surrogacy must be allowed in every country. We are living in democratic times thus people are willing to choose whether they want to adopt or undergo surrogacy process.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 5 years. I had multiple miscarriages. Eventually, I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We chose surrogacy as a way out of it. We went abroad as a surrogacy process is very complicated here in the UK. Despite our worries, we found a nice clinic. Our Dr. was extremely meticulous, thorough, kind, warm, smart, and accessible. She took the time to answer all of our questions. She was very honest about setting realistic expectations. Having myself multiple miscarriages, Dr. was very straight forward, but sensitive. She felt surrogacy was the best option for us. Her guidance helped us to make some heart-wrenching decisions which ultimately led us to have our miracle baby! We are very grateful to our clinic, our Dr. and our surrogate. We will be starting on a sibling surrogacy journey with the same clinic again soon. Good luck to everyone out there who is thinking about surrogacy! There are no reasons to hesitate. Believe me, you won't regret this decision.

"How a child is conceived and birthed, in the scheme of things is largely irrelevant". Given psychological and physical research, along with the moral, spiritual and ethical impact on individuals, societies, generations and humanity's trajectory as a whole, of ANY action, the ignorance and disrespect of this statement, especially in relation to a child, is stunning. I'm sorry, such a lost talk.

Women’s reproductive exploitation, that’s why many people (like me) are against it. In this society we are getting used to get what we want (clothes, cars, food, kids) by the exploitation of other beings. That doesn’t make it ok.

Surrogacy is definitely a controversial topic. And controversial things usually put a division between people. I stand with surrogacy. I don't care if it's unnatural or unethical, I just know that it gives happiness. It should be legalized around the world so that the problems with children like baby Manjie won't arise. Anyway, this is a really emotional video. Thukbs up!

Well for me it’s literally impossible to understand why somebody still could be against of such thing as surrogate mothers and the surrogate motherhood in general. Surrogate mothers deserve massive respect. I think that it is strange and has no reasonable background. Unfortunately, the problem of the infertility is highly common nowadays. And it seems that nobody can even imagine how many couples are trying to fight this problem! Some countries are not so highly developed as others, but their government supports the future.

ZONE13 haw old are you? Do you have your own child? Haw many years of infertility do you have? Do you have any idea what mean to try to have your baby for 10 years (because you and your husband are healthy not any cause of infertility) and every month you hope that could be the right month ?!. When you talk about adoption you know what are you talking about? Adoption takes years ,I know a couple that they wait 3 years ,they do the request internally in Italy and also outside Italy after 3 years the only response that they had it was from the outside ,from China and they paid 30000€ + the ticket for the flight that cost another 5000€.So as you can see the adoption is not a very easy option, a lot of couples after years of not response for adoption they think to surrogacy.

I don’t find anything wrong with surrogacy. I don’t think that it is against human laws. Nobody is forced to go for surrogacy. It is one own personal choice. Some people might be doing for the sake of money. They might not be educated enough for some other job. I am in the favor or surrogacy.

It is called an ultimatum, this kind of thing is promoting human trafficking and making children into some market product. No child is made for someone's benefit, it should be the other way around. I don't understand why people don't just adopt children? Orphans didn't choose to lose their family or become abandoned, they would always need a someone to look after them and people who already have children should consider adopting them too.

ZONE13 Surrogacy not human trafficking it is nanny job. Parents pay money for another woman take care about kid for 40 weeks. I am from Ukraine and we have good surrogacy law, that help many childless people.

+Stas Stas, That sounds insulting to nannies but my point is that surrogacy isn't marriage but a formulated divorce. People are separating themselves from others than to help in a community to ease each other lives and this isn't any different. You say 40 weeks but many parents who truly love their children would say a life time. You say your country helps childless people but telling them that having a child as the best solution for their anxiety is an ultimatum. However, if you tell them otherwise then it would be bad for business because industries like those would lose profits to keep their company going. Another problem for them would be if people found better ways to earn money then they would lose a lot of surrogates. For me, I would say that it is okay to be childless couples or singles and they shouldn't be ashamed on how other parents have their own. Helping to be part of a community is like forming a family bound with both young and old. Making children as a commodity would make more people become surrogates because of their poverty or just greedy for money. Finance and industrialism should never take charge over mother nature for granted. People should just adopt children but if they couldn't, it is not the end of the world and there are always other ways to make themselves happy.

Cancer or infertility influence human life and it is bad to say that society help people with cancer and does not help people with infertility. Many people have dream became a biological parent of kids, this is their biggest dream.

surrogacy does not always define as an exploitation of women. I know that some countries don’t regulate surrogacy in a proper way. but this fact doesn’t represent the condition of surrogacy all over the world. so stop judging people who choose it as a way out of infertility! maybe you don't understand, but some couples just don't have another option! how can you be so mean? you have no compassion at all. I find it strange that the media never highlights those stories. I am opting for surrogacy as well and that too from Ukraine. Not every clinic nor every surrogate mote or IP are like that. Every couple has the right to go for any treatment that they want to have kids. Surrogacy is a source of happiness for millions of people. The society should start opening up to it.
