A Horse Walks for the First Time in a Year | Wizard of Paws

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Yusi, an older horse has been unable to properly nurse her baby or walk unassisted due to her misaligned spine and damaged hind leg. Derrick worked through the night to create the perfect prosthetic for Yusi.

What an amazing outcome for that mare. Its only been from the recent ingenuity of people like this, that horses and other hooved animals are living new lives. Up until approx 15-20 years ago, a 3 legged horse would be put down. God Bless you for helping these precious animals. 🙏❤

Most ponies (Because they weigh less and are smaller=sturdier) could get away with a good prosthetic (Or a pogo leg in some cases) but horses who are forced to wear prosthetics don't end up living much longer due to continuous health problems/decline. They are too big and will sadly have to wait for something much more accommodating. Most people show the before but never the end story of whether the new legs are worth it for some of these horses.

Any time a person amputates the leg of a horse rather than euthanize them immediately, they're making a big commitment to the animal and deserve to be praised; these people are even more awesome for helping come up with long-term solutions. You can associate 'going out to walk' with 'having the leg on' so that she learns she doesn't have it in the stall and does have it out of the stall.

I know equestrians and others who think prosthetics for horses is abusive because of the weight that’s put on the leg, but I haven’t seen enough science to prove or disprove this. I’ve seen a horse or two who can run with their prosthetics, and I think when she gets used to hers things will be more hopeful.

When I watched this I cried... not out of happiness or because I had my heart strings pulled on like most of the comments on here. I cried because they let this poor pony suffer for a whole year, extremely underweight and in pain, unable to walk and having a foal on top of that for the sake of "saving" her, prioritizing living for life's sake (or for clicks on social media and views on television...) over quality of life. I'm disgusted.

While it is true that this could have been done sooner, you’re being dramatic. The horse can finally care for her baby properly, and that’s what matters.

Not trying to be a bitter Betty but I’m sorry I feel like an animal like this especially a horse that this just isn’t the best quality of life even with the prosthetic . Not to mention the mares underweight and just looks awful I hate to say it but it would’ve just been better to put the horse out of its misery and not let it have to suffer life like this 🥺
