A Home in the Bush Designed as a Fireproof Sanctuary (House Tour)

Ойын-сауық

Pearl Beach House by Polly Harbison Design is a concrete sculpture-formed home in the bush. Just one and a half hours north of Sydney, Pearl Beach is a small hamlet within dense coastal bushland. As a home in the bush, it was important that Pearl Beach House remained connected to its landscape while adhering to the fireproof requirements of the ‘Flame Zone’ BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rating. Set within a clearing, the building emerges from the forest and welcomes the views of lush foliage through its carefully placed windows. Extra care and attention were taken in creating micro-climates within the site, whether that be through the building’s use of space, materials, heating, or balance between exposure and enclosure.
The fireproof concrete masonry walls protect the home in the bush from bushfire. In the context of these robust walls, the natural light that permeates the spaces elevates the simple materials and balances their strength and substance. Despite its protective qualities, the home in the bush facilitates immersive outdoor living, with an outdoor shower that allows the clients to bathe in the moonlight, a significant outdoor living space and all circulation being external. The natural environment is also welcomed inward with the warmth and colour of the surrounding bush inspiring the home’s colour palette.
Minimalist in form and function, as well as a fireproof home, the project is a home in the bush that instils a sense of calm. Here, the clients can enjoy the simple things, slowing down to observe how the light moves through space or simply absorbing the sights and sounds of the landscape at their doorstep of their home in the bush.

This goes beyond what we can call a home. It almost feels transcendent. I can imagine that shower under the moonlight. Such a bespoke piece Polly, and to the Local Project team, hats off on how you always manage to make us feel like we're there 🖤

@@jameson566 Not really . Lots of rubbish buildings this is only the top .000001% America also has better design and use of space and Europe has is way of using tight spaces and japan . Our town planning codes don't allow this only in the bush Lets be realistic and have these designers discuss town planning codes. Especially Victoria and inconsistency

unfortnately @Simon is right, whilst Australia certainly has immensely talented architects, designers, engineers and builders, our suburbs are awash with very ugly contemporary houses, especially in the new estates popping up on the city fringes. It is because of several large estate developers/builders dominating the market with badly designed and often cheaply and poorly built houses, that are going to date rapidly and leave a lot of very ugly suburbs.

How ? I went to UTS I Understand the trendy terms they use Yes its amazing quality construction and amazing detailing Tho don't you think it is more in tune or context to be in newtown or in Sydney a 2 storey residence and so compact condensed. With the wide open spaces we have in Australia why not a spread out design . I didn't see the benefits of 2 stories without views . Unless it was a cost factor and rock and slope And I had to watch it again The garage could have been designing different and hidden. People are paying big bucks for houses in Australia we a not yet up to America design standards and construction standards . Neutra used space probably the best and we are influenced by urban design and urban town planning restrictions Australia is a little backwards tho there are many progressives designers and amazing leadership in some ways My criticism comes because of property prices and this on a global cost just dosen't deliver or stack up and without a pool and rooftop balcony . I think few years from now people will ask or demand more for there money

@@Simon-Simon-Simon it’s almost like people want different things out of their houses. For example, I would actively avoid buying a house with a pool because they’re work and I just don’t like swimming, and one of my favourite things to do is watch birds. I would much rather have these intimate views of the bush than sweeping vistas over the ocean. Different people want different things, and architects design for the brief they’re given :)

Exemplary. It is everything architecture can and should do. It elevates the possibilities of living. So much of exceptional design is unseen - how do we communicate the value of that to those that don’t value it because they can’t see it? There is so much being layered into this design it’s hard to even get your head around it. I’m an arch grad and this is an example of how considers I want my design process to one day be. Exquisitely executed. Accessibly and comprehensively communicated. Beautifully directed and shot. Thank you 🙏

I love the fact that it is bushfire safe and works with the environment, however it reminds me of a wartime bunker or a desolate brutalist ruin. And then the idea that a snake could slide into your living room...no thanks! I'd like to see this design with a little more lift brought to it through brighter furnishings or walls, to make it feel more cosy.
