Well, the movie is called The History of Violence. History is that Tom is actually Joey who was a part of mob long ago, and Violence is something that they as a family are experincing or have experienced recently. Not just Joey’s history or moments of him being himself, but also his son has gone through a lot of bullying in school and managed to overcome it. The message of the movie is exactly what you said. History. I think it is a perfect ending.

I love the color symbolism of each of the characters shirts. The little girl is innocent with purple, the son and mother both wear dark shirts, showing their effect on them from the violent. While Joey is wearing a black shirt with a coat trying to conceal some of it, just like how he tries to blend in but he cant hide all the darkness, but he has that little bit of that blue to show there is some good in him.

David M. Saporito do you think there may be also a metaphor of America ("history" vs story), trying to seek peace in the New World but (aside from settling there with violence already, and the war of independence too etc.) having then to face old Europe/Asia calling back to wars near its territory so to end it has to track the source of (in this case, national) violence back to those old territories (where America herself is coming from)? His brother's hometown/home... gone away for business (colonial trade)... (PS. probably this has already been noticed by others, would be interesting to know, i'm really just asking :) )

as someone who grew up around violence, and now about to have my first daughter, I feel this dynamic, sometimes those who have experienced the most violent are teh best protectors of the innocent, because they know how evil it truly is. for the family to realize how much he loves them and wants the best for them, shows human compassion and love for his dark past. amazing scene. In any other director's hand, this scene would have ended with all of them happy and hugging him when he got home. Cronenberg did something movies don't do today: Show the realism and consequences. The reason why the daughter embraces him so quickly is because she sees him as her dad. She doesn't know what he's done. She's just happy he's home. That's why she's so quick to welcome him back and put the plate on the table. But you can tell that the mother & son will never see him the same way again and are tormented by what they've gone through and how their lives are changed forever. Although the son is ready to forgive & try again to see if they can function as a family again, as we see him passing the plate of food to his father. This ending is so powerful & emotional!!!!

It's interesting to think how cold and capable Joey is and while the scene is about the family. I can't help but think we are also seeing the effects this actually had on Tom. Tom has been very hurt and traumatized by this experience; proving that he indeed isn't Joey.

Howard Shore brilliant 🎶 makes this scene feel so real. I love the daughter setting up a plate for daddy because no matter what his history of violence he will always be daddy. Absolutely brilliant David Cronenberg should have been nominated for best director and this film should have been nominated for Best Picture

shit I can't unhear Howard Shore. The music is pretty similar to that one in the lord of the rings. Not one to brag, but I recognized Shore right away while watching the movie. Beautiful music.

Here's my breakdown. Dad opens the door. He's been gone for three days. They're all in shock. They still have a plate ready just in case. Daughter sees daddy and says to herself while looking daddy in the eyes, "I knew you'd come back. Sit down." Mom bows her head in prayer! Son looks at Mom waiting for her to disapprove the Dad's but Mom remains in prayer that daddy will do anything for his family's safety. Son approves of his Mother's prayers then hands the plate of to his father. Mother lifts her head sees the tears in her husband's eyes. She asks with her eyes did you just kill your brother for us? Dad... yes.

I love the fact that three people were just killed in the front yard but there is no yellow crime scene tape.. no investigators, just clean up the bodies and move on.... Hollywood!!

Cronemberg understands the impact of how certain things shake us to the core and it's basically real human emotion apart from his extraordinary films of supernatural and fantastic stories like the fly and scanners, this is as real to real life as you can get!
